Self belief is truly the biggest worry. At the start of the last I thought "don't concede a quick one, else we will lose faith".....

Murph one handed effort was heart breaking. Silly mistakes cost us all game. Lack of composure killed us. i think the Betts out hurt a lot - forced Walker forward and while he did very well early we lost that run out of the backline. Agree with the almost consensus view about Davies, Tuohy and Bootsma. They were all very poor.

On the plus side I think our big defenders look very solid these days. Lets hope they stay injury free.

But positional moves aside, self belief is by far the biggest concern for me. When it was time to ice the game in the third we fluffed a couple of gettable goals, only for them to score and keep it close.

Your small forwards were very good, we didn't have any answers as johnson looks just about finished, russell was poor and toovey had an off game.

Having no jolly cost us immensely and your midfield was dominate for most of the game.

Really showed amazing heart that we ended up winning, plus we only had 2 on the bench for most of the 1st quarter. Lot of our lesser lights were amazing. Hopefully the next game is just as good

and speedy Gonzalez himself McLean, what a pathetic
Effort from a sub with fresh legs, the only impact he had was coughing the pill up
Straight to the opposition

Yup, 9 disposals in 17% game time, one clanger. Your bias has you magnifying everything McLean does .... every week.

Jesus, people need to chill out a bit.

Overall we played quite well I thought. Garlett, Kruze, Yarran, Jamo, Hendo and Rowe were all very good. Nearly everyone was good too. Bootsma certainly needs a year in the VFL to bulk up and to learn a bit more, but the kid has potential. Army had an off day, but that's the exception, not the rule.

What concerns me was our lack of run in the last quarter. We should have finished all over the top of the Pies, but it was the other way around.

Umpiring? You want to blame umpiring for that loss? Typical.

Your boy Lucas can't tackle for shit. You carried on about Gibbs, where was he today? Back to his old tricks hesitating to go for the ball and waiting to tackle all the time. USELESS!

I called for 5 changes and people got on my back over it. Only 2 of them were dropped. The other 3 were terrible.

Tell me, who starred out of Touhy, Lucas and Casboult?

To make things worse, the nutcase coach of ours bring in Davies who can't play.

Laidler even though he wasn't having a good day is still >>>>>> Davies, yet Laids get subbed. What a joke.

I thought the altitude training in Arizona was supposed to make sure we'd have the edge in battles like this, where the other team has been down a player all day, instead they kick 7 goals in the last quarter what a joke.

MM is a nutcase? Because he wants to see how players stand up under pressure? Please. He's 2 games into coaching at Carlton and people like you write him off...ridiculous.

So many posters here are hysterical. It's 2 games that we've just lost. We're not Melbourne here. MM needs time to test all the players on the list. Bootsma has been given a chance and isnt ready. Sure if he keeps getting games then you criticise him but not after trying him out for a couple games. Same with other players. I really dont like Davies and dont think he's up to it but I have no problem with MM selecting him and throwing him into the fire to see how he responds. It's why MM is a great coach and by seasons end he'll know who his best players are. People need to settle down.

BTW its not like only Carlton did altitude training and no one else did. What did you think last week when we ran all over Richmond in the last that they arent a fit team? The boys simply didnt work hard enough in the last quarter, it's mental, simple as that.

Lets pull out all the players with minimal games under their belt and throw in all the new players with no senior experience.
How can some of you think that this is the solution to our problem?
I guess maybe we're just tired of the same old scapegoats and it's time they were replaced.
Makes sense doesn't it? Drop the players who are learning and making some mistakes for players who haven't played at all.

Those knee jerk type reactions are definitely going to win us a premiership.

Will be very interested to see what changes we make next week.

Bring back Ratts.
We could've had any coach coaching us and we still would of lost... We ain't got the cattle... We have a half complete back line, a half complete forward line and an ageing set of stars who arent as good as they once were in the middle (simspon, Carazzo, Judd).. Hate to say it but we need a little rebuild this season and can't blame Malthouse for realising we need to blood youngsters or looking forward we're I trouble... Hence we'll see a lot of Bootsma, Casboult, Davies Etc until they 100% prove to Mick they're not worth persevering with.

These players are rubbish and should never play for Carlton again:

McLean
Bootsma
Armfield
Davies
Tuohy
Joseph
Ellard
Collins
White

Ok i'm out when people start posting total and utter garbage like this i know i'm done.

Oh and dj lift yr game support your team and to say Boots should never play again pull yr ****ing head in ya goose.

This.

Should have been Army's kick at half forward with about 65 seconds to go. Instead, they kick 2 goals.
Same for me. I don't usually blame the umpires but today there were 3 clear instances where no frees were paid to us and in all three instances there was a clear momentum shift as a direct result. The Army one the most obvious, but there was also one where Murph was clearly held back with out it. Another in Yarran's back that went straight up the other end for a goal. Really Pissed at these as they were clear frees that didn't get paid. Jesus, even the Walker free nearly wan't given, and the whistle only went after he was held without, the over the shoulder TWICE! Whistle should have gone before the over the shoulders...

On the other hand, I guess we oughta get out of the shit habit of stopping and waiting for the whistle instead of getting on with it. It kills us every time.

BTW, apart from that goal in the last quarter, I thought Lucas was again poor. Got a bit of the ball but slipped three tackles that he should've held. Has absolutely no core strength. Simmo - Out of Sorts. Army - Out of sorts, Gibbs - Had a poor second half. Unsure why Duigan got dropped either. Ring the changes next week.

Didnt expect to win going in but thought we should have been 4-5 goals up at 3/4 time. Really outplayed them for 3/4's but then got run over shockingly. We lost all run, didnt man up and lost our structure. Even when we won the ball in the backline we had nothing forward to kick to.

When Jolly went down i thought we should win and dominate the ruck. Kruezer was great in the ruck and we dominated the middle but didnt take advantage enough. Made some silly errors and give the ball back. Also some pretty poor umpiring (murphy high tackle in forward 50) and a few holding the ball/man decision not called were perplexing but cant blame that on the loss.

Lucas 2 missed tackles were crucial, 1 directly resulted in a goal and the other ended up being a goal. not good enough. Thought he did some nice things but needs to improve tackling. Overall i thought our tackling was poor. I know they said they didnt do as much tackling over the pre-season to prevent injuries, might be a mistake.

Bootsma is a bit of a liability. Looks lost at times and needs to beef up. Credit for his chase that resulted in the out of bounds shot. Davies did some nice things but big mistake in the last when spoil attempt and then went past the man, pretty bad mistake.

Fwds struggled to have an impact (rowe and casboult). Was a good day for big fwds though. Yaz was great as was garlett. Walker kicked 3 but was quiet around those goals.

Murphy was great, 3rd qtr was a star. Jamo killed cloke and hendo was decent as well. Onto next week.

Hi all, new to this board. On a positive note thought we showed we can match it with the top teams this year.
The ball didnt bounce our way last quarter unfortunately. Yes there were a few horrible mistakes by our players and the umpires. Still I believe our effort was pretty good. Kreuzer has a heart the size of Phar Lap.
Rowe had an awesome debut. He really stood up. Ok some guys standards were down tonight, but we are still learning game plan and some players are relatively young. Casboult, Bootsma and Zac need to lift. Bell will improve, just wasnt used to the tempo of a huge game like that. Dont think mclean is an ideal sub but can see the reasoning why they tried it. Scotland, Waite and Betts to return show encouraging times ahead. Go Blues, bring on the weagles.

Stopped reading here.

Who did we leave out that could have won us the game?

I'm shocked that you didn't slip in your dig at Mclean earlier.

Pathetic observations after we were overrun down by a top four side that could make the GF.

No actually you kept reading too the end

This may be a big call, but I suspect Simpson is at a career crossroads. Certainly he is not an ‘automatic selection’ like previous years.

His kicking skills let him down and an outside player cannot afford this.

Good overhead, courageous and runs all day.

Hopefully this is a bad patch. But as an out-of-form senior player he will need to lift for us to be in finals contention.

Wasn't expecting us to win that after Jolly went down, Kruezer was massive for you guys. In the end I think we just wanted it more, not sure what the contested possession count was but i think we are up at one stage.

Yarran, Garlett, judd, Jamison were very very good today. I thought murphy had a nice little patch, Gibbs was quiet and carazzo looked a little lost to me. Simpson needed to do more and I'm not sure why Maclean was the sub!??

The lack of player accountability was the biggest thing to come out of the game. At one point Collingwood went coast-to-coast while Shaw was sitting on the ground due to cramp. They were a player down and still had free men the length of the ground, it was bizarre.

Coaching panel should definitely take some heat for leaving Casboult on the field and McLean on the bench in the wet. Casboult had 6 touches with 89% time on the ground. Meanwhile McLean was never going to come on and tear the game apart in the last quarter. He's not an impact player, and needed to be out there grinding away in the wet much earlier.

Time to end the Bootsma experiment and let him develop in the VFL. He will be a good player.

Davies isn't up to AFL standard. The supporters have all known it for a while, hopefully Mick catches on soon enough.

Lucas presents a massive problem. Has all the tools, and should be stepping up by now. Unfortunately he has no hardness, can't tackle, poor decision making, and is probably #1 at the club for diabolical momentum-killing errors. (with apologies to Armfield)
Carrazzo needs to put the disappointment of missing the captaincy behind him and knuckle down.

All that being said, I expect we'll bounce back against the Cats. Scotland and Hampson should help our structure immensely.
