can't help but think that Crows season is fcked if they have actually have to quarantine for the 2 weeks like is currently reported
At this stage, it wouldn't be hard to make up the lost games while still ensuring they are played against opponents who are similarly prepared.

Although the speed of the sell outs is definitely impressive I'm finding some of the social media commentatary disingenuous considering the reduced crowd capacities. But given the constant ridicule from trolls about the free entry in previous seasons I can definitely understand the joyous response to sell outs.

Also as much as I love the traditional venues does Kate McCarthy have a good point?

WB v Carl
I haven't seen any news about Laloifi's availability for Friday night, though the word after Thursday was that Pound would be right to go for R2. So Carlton might have one backline regular go out and one come in for their match against the Bulldogs. McEvoy's projected return is apparently R3, and without her they aren't a serious flag contender imo (a belief which led to me correctly tipping the "upset" of R1), but I'm still leaning towards the Blues in a tight one this time around.

Coll v Geel
Aliesha Newman has been rubbed out for Collingwood's clash with the Suns on Saturday (for the tackle that has left Laloifi in doubt). However, that exclusion will be made up for (and then some) with the return of Sarah Rowe from a shoulder issue.

If the Cats just let the Pies' equivalent of Ellie Gavalas (I'm not sure who that'd be... Mikala Cann maybe) do whatever she wants—standing at a throw-in by herself 20m out from goal, for instance, and then have the opposition ruckman tap it down her throat—they will again cop a hiding. Until a few days ago, however, that hasn't been their modus operandi.

Attention to defensive detail has typically been Geelong's strength, and I expect they will bounce back in that department. If they do, a repeat of their original '19 encounter still seems unlikely to me, considering Collingwood have shown they can bust open a contested slogfest wide open in a matter of ten minutes.

Melb v Rich
Might (will) get ugly on the scoreboard, though I'm still expecting a rather free-flowing end-to-end game.

NM v StK
Perhaps the opposite.

Bris v GC
Even if Kalinda Howarth plays I doubt she'll be 100% fit coming off a weekend when she appeared to be hampered by a number of stingers and strains etc. Although I tipped Brisbane to lose against the Cats, this feels like a much better match-up for the Lions, but still expect them to make it harder on themselves than necessary.

GWS v Adel
The Giants finally get to come home... to play in front of nobody. Although the match will be closed to the public, it should at least be a prettier spectacle on TV than when these teams previously met at Blacktown (R4 2018, a sopping wet 19-19 deadlock). The head-to-head history between GWS and the Crows is quite peculiar--imo the Giants have played much better than what the scoreboard has suggested on all four occasions, regardless of who won/lost/drew.

Alyce Parker and Bec Beeson were the dominant ball-winners last week at Fremantle Oval, just as they were in last year's win against Adelaide. Elle Bennetts and Rebecca Privitelli also carried on from strong 2020 form but, unlike that Norwood Oval meeting in which Erin Phillips only kinda played, the Giants didn't have a favourable portion of match-winners on their side in a commendable performance vs the Dockers.

Tips
Blues by 6
Pies by 24
Dees by 50
Roos by 12
Lions by 1
Crows by 18
(Freo by 30 if a match vs Eagles happens)

This is more than I thought it would be. Although I find it strange they refer to a 2-2.5k range. Surely they would have an exact number that they sold tickets to?

Came to post this.
Gotta do it. Financially dumb not to.

For grounds without stands the whole way round it seems like they section up the grassy bits/open areas, so might be able to have families in each square, or couples/individuals which could explain the variation (i.e. spaced so they could fit anywhere from 1-4 people from same group and still be socially distanced). With seats all around it'd be easier and more definite.

Would also support bigger venues.

I assume the 2-2.5 thing was a guess at the capacity and wasn't something official the club had specified.

Last year, the first game we had after the redevelopment was complete was against Gold Coast, that game was also a sell out and there were 3,280 at that game (pre covid). I am not exactly sure how social distancing is going to work with the standing room areas, people can't manage to work the dots on the floor at supermarkets.

With a bit of luck, when they redevelop the North Melbourne precinct in the near future they will adjust the size of the reserve so we have more space to put some additional seating at the ground, now that the AFL has approved it for VFL and AFLW games. Since we adjusted the size of the oval to be the same dimensions as Docklands it has made the possibility of increasing the capacity atm unlikely, the ovaL is basically up against Fogarty Street and Macaulay Road.

It would be nice to have a 10-15k capacity for AFLW and VFL games but at present it is a luxury. I am really happy at the rate of growth and improvement of the game, and our own team, it is a bit disappointing to see some the snarky comments some posted on social media, it is better to get 2.5k out of a 3.2k capacity stadium than get whatever there was at Geelong last week in a much larger stadium. i think having a better atmosphere with a crowd closer together than a widely dispersed crowd in a much larger stadium is better for the growth of the game.

very sad for me. I bought tickets to the Collingwood v Suns game and was really looking forward to seeing the Suns girls play!

my mum is flying in from Brisbane to Melbourne on the 20th, which is when the Crows were originally scheduled to play Collingwood at Vic Park - if the game doesn't happen then, it'll be a shame, but lucky it's not the main reason why she is coming down

Haven't had enough time to talk myself into tipping a new upset, so all these predictions are fairly... predictable.
