1. Faull would have been gone by our next pick; widely reported Sydney were well into him.

2. Our rebuild will happen over multiple drafts and our first three selections were players who can play mid/ forward.

3. The next full time legit mid that was taken after Faull was Ough at 36. Murphy Reid more outside than a TT/ Hopper replacement.

Issue with TT and Hopper is I think the game has changed significantly since we traded for them. The crash and bash style which favors both is well on the way out with speed and skill taking over. We’ve got some of the players on the list who may be able fill that already (Lalor/ Smillie/ KMac2/ Hotton); but it’ll take a few more drafts, and a few more seasons to get these guys the experience and knowledge to play midfield at a high level.

Until then TT and Hopper we’ll have to persist with and hope that they can help develop the next midfield group.
TT is only good up forward. His old club knew that and played him there and that's where his value is. But he wants to play midfield so we oblige. Hopper that was putrid effort and thats been kind. Showed no urgency and showed bugger all to be frank. Kids tried hard but all the so called veterans let them down. Miller got the wrath of supporters but the poor dude was on his own. The only positive was blight campbell and Armstrong and keeping the score under 100

And two pretty lame 50 metre penalties.
Totally unprofessional!
Exactly and how many times were those turnovers in the centre or in front and then 5 seconds later it’s coming into a d50 that only one or two defenders are in
TT and Hopper are just part of what will be a suitable midfield mix moving forward. At the moment McAuliffe is on the fringes, Hotton is injured, Smillie is injured and Lalor has played two games.

Then there’s at least one more elite midfielder coming next draft, maybe two.

And Seth Campbell might get time in there also.

It’s not the fault of TT and Hopper that the fleet footed mids that’ll soon be part of the mix aren’t there yet.

Remember when Richmond beat the Swans last year it was because of Richmond midfielders - an engine room that carried the swans into the Grand Final !

Quoting myself from before round 1.

All I hope is that the mistakes we make are by our kids or bottom six players.

Leaders need to stand up, make good decisions and not cough up the ball.

That was the disappointing part of Collingwood pre season game.
Very disappointing to see this exact scenario. The Collingwood practice game and now yesterday.

I’d hoped those that didn’t care had left the club.

boys need to learn full effort and intensity from the start of the first quarter.
today was a limp and weak display in the first half
work and effort needs to be the game plan.
applause for our kids, who tried hard
Why don’t they go into lockdown mode for the first fifteen minutes until the players start to appreciate the tempo of the game

So you don't like the joke, that's fine. But calling on mods because of it? Let people with a dark sense of humour crack their jokes, rather than trying to ban them from saying it. Other folks might find it funny. Stop clutching your pearls.
Jokes are supposed to be funny.

Think something to keep in mind for people piling on is that Port finished 2nd last year and made a prelim. They are an experienced side, playing at home with something to prove after getting toweled up last week.

That said, our lack of pressure particularly in the first half was disappointing. We let them move it way too easily from half back. We were much better in the second half but admittedly Port also took their foot off the gas.

It also doesn't help when 2 of their first 3 goals come from really really shit decisions and 50m penalties that were never there (hope Rioli gets fined for staging). All of a sudden we're 20 points down and we haven't actually played that badly.

On to next week. Lynch is back which completely fixes our forward structure. Keep getting games into the kids and we'll be alright.

As soon as Port got their gift from the umpires they were off to the ski shop at Mt Buller. 181 disposal difference and we still didn’t give up a 100 point lead at any stage of the game. The young fellas have some real fight in them!

Any team that gets badly beaten looks like they’re not trying. If there was genuinely a group of players not trying we’d have lost that game by 120+ which looked likely when 83 down early in third.

Did TT, Ross and Hopper look like they cared against Carlton? And what, now they don’t give a sh*t a week later?

Let’s keep the analysis at least mildly rational.

when Willie Rioli flopped to the ground like a dying actress started the gift giving from the umps

We got absolutely slaughtered in midfield. Tarranto. Kmac and Ross had stinkers. Hopper was our best midfielder and he offered very little. I'd persevere with them until Laor, Smillie Hotton build their tanks to spend extended spells in midfield. Then we've got this year's draft with likely 2 picks in the top 5.
I liken it to when we had Anthony Miles and Towner in midfield. A couple of years and we will be looking a lot better.

True but there wasn't a lot if any gut running from our mids or Nank... It would be interesting to see the heat map or GPS numbers show? I feel they will clearly highlight the lack of work out yesterday. Every time you looked across the ground it seem as though our players were jogging slowly through the centre. It was a terrible look and the commentators clearly noticed it also. Port were spreading to the outside and we just didn't or couldn't go with them.

It probably doesn't help when we have 5 blokes running through the middle that lack genuine pace and have poor work rate. Sadly, we won't have an answer this year so whenever we come up against another quick midfield we will get a thrashing.

Hopefully McAuliffe, Smillie or Hotton can make a slight difference? However, mid season draft we must find a quick mid. Both first round picks at the end of the year must be quick mids.

We do have a lot of other bases covered so it's not all doom and gloom. But speed, we need speed.......

We got absolutely slaughtered in midfield.
We were fairly competitive in the "inner core" of the midfield.

Problem was, we had no protection on the "outer core" as our players over-committed to winning the ball inside, leaving Port players free to roll off the contest unimpeded if and when they won possession.

We just need to get a lot smarter in and around the contest. Our collective and individual footy IQ is really low.

Boys did well to reel it in after the first half. Not even halfway through the 2nd qtr we were 9 goals down and port weren’t even looking that great, was diabolically bad. Glad they fought it out to the end. Some good signs with the young fellas like has already been mentioned. Looking forward to the vdl today to see who puts their hand up.

Blight showed a bit up forward didn’t he? Worth pursuing that I reckon

Blight started this year well, one of our best last night. Much to like.

Bauer out for Lynch
Kmac mk2 for Banks

Kmac 1 on the wing to cover banks and kmac2 in the guts
Kmac did three handballs to the outside that went straight to Port players who were metres away from tiger players. Got run down after a mark and kick the ball out of bounds on the full. All in the first half I haven’t seen the second half yet but when we needed him he was bad. Play the kids.

Even a broken clock is right twice every day.

It was the same midfield that got smacked week in, week out.

The Swans game was the exception to the rule …. never to be repeated in 24.

First half of the game was really poor. Especially with a couple of goals given away early due a to lack of discipline. At 1/4 time it was looking like a certain 100+ point loss. Port moved the ball incredibly easily and we struggled to win any contest.

Clutching at positives, at least the team rallied somewhat in the second half and we started to win some contests and score ourselves. We started to have more "good patches" of play and better effort in general.

As most have said midfield was horrible.
it’s obvious now Taranto and hopper are just solid players at best.
Ross had a stinker but like above he’s never gonna be a star.
They all lack any pace.
Need to find a better balance.
Toranto and Hopper have high number of handballs and we surround them with KMac and Dow who are not good kickers. We need to get players like Sonsie, Smith McAuliff and Ross. Maybe HRS in there when he’s fit again. I don’t understand why we persist with a losing combination. If we lose with the kids in there we are no worse than we are now

😂 imagine how bad the scum are who got beat by us
Apart from the interest if watching our players develop, my next main interest in the AFL is hoping that Carlton miss finals.

Based on age profile and talent of their core players they should be competing for the flag. Another missed finals means another wasted year of oppotunity for this group. I think their main core is now 28+ years old. Based on age profile I'd say they have 2 years max before they have to either go straight for a rebuild or prolong the pain of not making difficult decisions and remaining a middle of the road club for longer.
