Toranto and Hopper have high number of handballs and we surround them with KMac and Dow who are not good kickers. We need to get players like Sonsie, Smith McAuliff and Ross. Maybe HRS in there when he’s fit again. I don’t understand why we persist with a losing combination. If we lose with the kids in there we are no worse than we are now
Can’t play Dow. Doesn’t win enough ball and has zero hurt factor.
I’d almost go back to a few years ago and put short in there.

Apart from the interest if watching our players develop, my next main interest in the AFL is hoping that Carlton miss finals.

Based on age profile and talent of their core players they should be competing for the flag. Another missed finals means another wasted year for oppotunity for this group. I think their main core is now 28+ years old. Based on age profile I'd say they have 2 years max before they have to either go straight for a rebuild or prolong the pain of not making difficult decisions and remaining a middle of the road for longer.
More so if they miss the finals by 4 premiership points haha.

Don’t mind Dow right now
So far he’s been consistent in terms of his output
Hasn’t been spectacular but not terrible

That’s something that the coaches can work with, I’m more concerned with Ross after last nights game

TT is only good up forward. His old club knew that and played him there and that's where his value is. But he wants to play midfield so we oblige. Hopper that was putrid effort and thats been kind. Showed no urgency and showed bugger all to be frank. Kids tried hard but all the so called veterans let them down. Miller got the wrath of supporters but the poor dude was on his own. The only positive was blight campbell and Armstrong and keeping the score under 100

I saw Hopper as someone who was cracking in yesterday. He's just an average good midfielder though if we're being fair. He's not moving the needle.

We need to change the mix up in the middle. Carlton actually bashed us up there in the first half especially last week but it went unnoticed because we won. It's beggars' belief as to why Mcauliffe can't get a game in there right now.

Yeah I know what you mean.

Ross is just too slow. When he plays a bad one he coughs the ball up and looks timid at times.

It’s a really tough one right now (our midfield)
It’s clear that the mix isn’t right but we don’t have any easy answers either

On the inside we are fine and probably about par but it’s that outside spread that kills us

Yeah Hotton and smilie will help but just kids atm.

Yeah that’s very true, I wonder if the coaches had planned to have Hugo spend some time around the ball
Could be an interesting option as well

Agree but we can’t seem to get our hands on it first.
Pert coaching effectively played "keepings off". Where possible avoided a contested game. On field, we allowed this to continue for far too long.
As stated earlier, we need to learn when and how to lock down.

Port seemed to have more players on the ground than we did, they had guys in important areas whereas we often didn’t. Example being kick ins, they applied pressure and got it back off our kick ins whereas when it was their turn they easily got it out
It's been that way for us for at least the last 2 years. Against everyone else too, not just Port.

Yesterday was a reminder to everyone just where our focus should be this year. Long term development of the next generation over short term success.

Positives:
We saw plenty of glimpses from our sub 50 game players in a game where they were up against it playing a side that had been embarrassed the week before, on their home deck for their first home game and were looking to make amends.

Firstly we still managed to have 23 scoring shots despite being dominated on the stats sheet in terms of possessions. We had 50 inside 50s despite conceding nearly 200 more disposals.

We had 23 scoring shots from those I50s which shows that our system and structures are still working despite the lopsided nature of the game.

We saw glimpses from Armstrong & Fawcett as our KPF targets who were playing their 2nd & 1st career games with both kicking their first career goals. Both showed a willingness to compete and neither dropped their heads despite being up against it for most of the game. They kept presenting and providing an option for teammates and at this stage of their careers, that's what we want to see.

Trainor backed up a solid debut game with another good performance, even spilling blood for the club as he flew the flag for teammates after the scuffle with Horne-Francis.

Campbell Mansell & Green were very good up forward despite being up against it, the trio combing for 42 disposals 19 score involvements 56 pressure acts & 8 scoring shots (2.6). When you look at the make of the forward line yesterday, they were our 1st, 2nd & 4th most experienced players inside F50 playing their 55th(Mansell) 23rd(Campbell) & 8th(Green) career games. They will only improve as a trio as the season progresses.

As I said despite the scoreboard there was plenty to like from yesterday when it comes to the long term view we should be taking this year as supporters.

"Negatives":
Like many it would be easy to sit here and pot senior players in Nankervis Taranto Hopper McIntosh & Ross for poor games, but the reality is that games weren't much different to last week from an overall view point. Soundly beaten early on by their opponents and unlike last week there was no second half comeback to make their games appear better than they really were. As a team we conceded nearly 200 more disposals, made up entirely of uncontested possessions (353-174) yet we won contested possessions (114-120) clearances (36-40) & centre clearances (10-18).

Our game plan is being built around being strong at the contest and then using efficient ball movement to get the ball inside 50 quickly before teams get a chance to set up defensively. We were still able to play that way yesterday, but defensively we struggled to stop Port once they won possession and once they did they were able to maintain possession until they were able to open up a hole in our defensive structures and then taking advantage. That will happen with a largely inexperienced group, we had 13 players under 50 games yesterday.

Changes:
In - Lynch
Out - Fawcett/Bauer

Nothing major in terms of wholesale changes. Lynch comes back in with either Fawcett or Bauer to make way. I'd probably go with Fawcett to remain in and move Armstrong into the Bauer role as the 3rd tall. Any other changes would depend on how McAuliffe Sonsie Alger perform in the VFL today.

We were fairly competitive in the "inner core" of the midfield.

Problem was, we had no protection on the "outer core" as our players over-committed to winning the ball inside, leaving Port players free to roll off the contest unimpeded if and when they won possession.

We just need to get a lot smarter in and around the contest. Our collective and individual footy IQ is really low.
kept meaning to say we sometimes need to position our three guys at centre bounces as ruck, first recipient, second recipient. If the ruck manages to knock the ball to a teammate, either recipient can be first depending but the guy who isn't first needs to position himself to receive from the first guy while looking around to dispose to advantage. Other players can come in so it's not so predictable but it seems an easy enough way to improve our results from stoppage.

Ross is rubbish.
Couldn’t hit a guy 10m on his own when under no pressure in the last qtr
Hey, hey, we had a loss and Shandi is BACK baby. He was sure quiet for a week. Welcome back buddy. I look forward to your insights for the next 6 days.

Even a broken clock is right twice every day.

It was the same midfield that got smacked week in, week out.

The Swans game was the exception to the rule …. never to be repeated in 24.
Yeah, we had a great run with injuries through every line last year. Our midfield according to you was untouched by injury though……..amazing insight

Reality is this is where we are at. High/low performances for the next couple of years. And this is why i DON’T want us to look at Harley Reid. We need to bank as many top 20 picks and keep bringing talent in and turning the list over. People forget the list churn Dimma had in his first few years as a senior coach trying to get the mix right. 3 first rounders for Reid? Nope, rather 3 top 10 picks to come in rather than one bloke.
It’s R2. 21 to go. Games into kids. Not even worried.

Banks will be another change due to entering concussion protocols

Depending on the vfl today I would probably go Sonsie or Kmac2

Throw Kmac1 onto the wing if need be to give Sonsie or Kmac2 a crack around the ball since the saints don’t have the biggest midfield

That was what I was getting at with the other changes. It just depends on which of those guys plays best.

Also people will point out to the contested numbers. When I say we got beat up, I mean on the outside we were completely smashed.
yeah PA had close to 100 more uncontested possesions,we're fine in contested ball but oppo coaches are aware RFC lacks speed outside the contest, also 60-70 more marks majority uncontested,PA played smart, made it an outside game bc we only laid 39 tackles compared to 74 previous week, its clear at this early stage the style preferred so now its up to the brainstrust to develop the nullification of the outside spread, they get some time as its not an overnight fix,we still searchin for that line breaker, could be Gibcus but hes more interceptor so the search is important and will be interesting to see who it they bring in to play the speedy line breaker role

just on PA,yesterdays game is clear evidence they can never win a flag with that game style, its avoid contest at all costs and doesnt figure in september,id rather be we're RFC is at,a good contested game foundation whilst developing an outside
style which in all fairness has a way to go.
