Autopsy Round 2 vs Bravedogs. Things learnt

Interesting to see people declaring Mills can't play the HBF role after he pissed in the Rising Star in that position last year
I don't think anyone is saying he can't play that role it is just that right now he's struggling back there and it is costing us. Move him to the midfield or drop him to get some form into him. And then he comes back into the team. Not that hard really.

We've lost the first 2 games. You can lose back to back games during the year too and still be top 4 or Grand Finalists. Looks pretty bad on the injury front but if you take the depleted status and inexperience of the side tonight, the umpiring and look at the effort tonight there is no reason given players returning, improvement from some senior blokes just going atm we could come home with a wet sail. Just have to batten down the hatches for now and start with a win next week. No good playing like we did tonight with the effort and pissing up against the wall next week.

Yep if we play like we did tonight - with that sort of effort and if Reid continues his form, Buddy fires, the young players play like they did tonight and hopefully the senior players improve we should beat the Pies and our season is back on track. There was major improvement tonight, some good signs I thought.

No way Jones get a week for that hit. Was late, that's it.
It was a bit high and late, but it's probably unlikely to really go anywhere. Cloke not going off (AFAIK) has to help too.

The great thing about tonight is the strong performance didn't come from our stars. Hanners, Parker, Mills were all nowhere to be seen but our young kids really stood up. If our stars can get back to their normal selves we'll be well in the clear

Just make top 8 there is another bye before the finals this year as well so top 4 isn't as important, if we can get a full fresh squad and for once HAVE SOME LUCK ON OUR SIDE no reason we cant win 4 games in a row in September.
Don't know if it's a once off by dogs. Be extremely difficult with the travel.

Uncharted territory for the defense well over last years average again. Next week is not going to get any easier, Tippet to miss and possibly Jones, Heeney in would be a small chance and Papley needs NEAFL.

Still a while before we have access to best 22 and far too much damage could be done by then. Next week is crucial so another long nervous wait.
Can't see Jones gone. If we don't win next week our season will be ****ed

I don't like this argument. Mentally tough players HAVE to learn not to let setbacks affect them. When Luke Ablett kicked it to Cousins in 2005, we could have thrown in the towel but 21 blokes said right, we've still got plenty of time to win back the lead, rolled up their sleeves and got to work, and the result was a flag. As a professional you just have to learn to keep playing no matter what gets thrown at you.

True. But confidence waxes and wanes throughout a game. A straight kick, important tackle or crucial mark can make a huge impact. As can a a dropped mark, a bad miss or getting run down from behind.

Players are only human.

Like the Pies last night all getting the yips in fromt of goal. What happens in games effects all your teamnates...mentally strong or not.

Mills is having 2nd year blues ATM

Hayward will be the best of picks imo , love florent too

We need a stringer like in our midfield asap , need that break away pace ( Hayward )

If Newman can get more of the ball we could use his skills of HB

Harry lol

Reid shoved it up me again

Aliir is going to be an All Aus

You can't kick goals & take marks in the rehab room!

We lost the following; free kicks (18-31), contested possessions (153-169), tackles (74-84) and disposals (352-412) and yet I walked away feeling confident for the future, not only longer term, but for this season as well.

Some of the experienced players are struggling for form (and fitness?), the younger players mostly ran out of legs later in the game and we are conceding significantly more scores from the I50 entries that we normally do, yet I am comfortable that we have the talent, desire and endeavour to continue to compete and contend and that whilst obviously not ideal a 0-2 start, with the current depleted team, is far from a portent of a significant fall down the ladder.

One player I will mention who has received some mild criticism in this thread, but I believe no praise is Aliir.
A somewhat nervous start (and a horrible dropped mark), but yet again he demonstrated an ability to not drop his head, to take the game on and his ragdogging of million dollar Boyd was a sight to behold.
Aliir was playing only his 14th senior game tonight. I want to see him continue to take the game on, to fly for his marks, to use his strength, to show dare and leadership in the back half.
He is the future down back and I like he plays as if he knows it.

Happy with the effort tonight, considering how many players we have out and/or underdone.

We did something tonight that we didn't last year and that was chase down a 5 goal lead.

We will be much better once Heeney is back in the midfield, the more games we get into Newman and Hayward the better too.

The game is getting to the point where as much as it would be a pain and would slow play down, we need an umpire upstairs reviewing every play live that can overturn poor decisions. That hold against aliir was the worst call i have ever seen.

Surely the afl needs to look at a game ask itself how can a free kick count be 31-18
