Autopsy Round 2 vs Bravedogs. Things learnt

Mills had a great year last year but let's be honest. He's not a backman. He's great at the intercept and delivers off halfback well but in a genuine one on one he's suspect. That moment when the ball was coming in and he went the spoil when all he had to do was was step into the space showed him up. He's not that tenacious, dogged defender that can harrass the opposition forwards.

Jack picked up in the last quarter but looked cooked for most of the game. Constantly went to ground....like every time.

Hopefully Cameron gets chosen over Sinclair next week, as per my point above go the young player who won't be much worse but has the potential to improve us, rather than getting spooked and picking the vanilla experienced player. If we can just hang in there and keep in touch of the 8, pumping some games into these kids now could prove invaluable later in the year.
It's almost unbelievable that 4 of last years draftees may have made their AFL debut by round 3, it's good as in they are all showing something and look maybe a good haul but a bit of an indictment on our a portion 'fringe' group that, given all our injuries, they're getting over take by the newbies.

Honest question. What did you think of the Dogs unfurling their Premiership flag against your side?

Personally i think it's disgusting and disgraceful. Idgaf if it's the first home game of the season, do the honourable thing and do it the next home game. It can be done just like Geelong did when they waited to play at skilled stadium.

AFL are partly to blame for the fixturing though.

It's their first home game. I don't see any problem with it. Probably should've added some extra motivation for us, if anything.

We got smashed in some key stats:

412 disposals to 351 (40 less kicks)

84 tackles to 74, despite having less of the ball. 30 of those tackles were in the 1st quarter; our pressure dropped right off.

95 marks to 62.
Of those, uncontested marks were 76 to 48.

The dogs run hard for those uncontested leads and we don't go with them.

We somehow lost the hitouts, but clearances were dead even, so that's good.

Were the clearances really even in the end? We were up like 14-2 early on.

Nice to hear this from a neutral fan. I completely agree - I think it is an absolute disgrace to rub it in the face of the team you beat last season. Poor form from the AFL.

Given the awfully compromised draw anyway, I think the first GF rematch should be away from home for the Premiers.

We've lost our last four games against the Bulldogs. Maybe something needs changing?
Longmire doesn't seem to have a great record against Clarkson or any of his assistants, asides from Simpson I think.

They've handled the big moments better in all four games though, even ignoring umpire influence.

I know what you mean BUT how can you handle big moments better if there are genuinely 2 different set of rules. Does that not lend itself to players being poor? Getting frustrated heck even giving up. So maybe if umpires were on their game and fair the big moments are different moments

I know its sour grapes or a cop out to blame umps and people will say ohh but check x stat, but I would argue when it comes to the last 2 v the dogs its a cause for discrepancies in stats and big moments

I try (not duing the game) to be fair and call out if we are shit eg last week

But i dunno, nothing we can do even if it is the umps

I would love to see a stat over the years of free kicks that lead to goals.

I swear we would be on top for against and bottom for receiving them.

They are momentum killers, it's cost us a few games against the Hawks in the last few years.

Things I learnt:

The positives
- Hayward, Florent, Newman - tick, tick, tick! All dropped in and out of the game a bit, but Florent had some lovely moments in the first half, some of Newman's field kicking was delightful, and Hayward I thought was amongst our best in the second half in particular. Some really good signs. Fox was a bit quieter, but had a few moments as well.

- Sammy Reid - so nice to have him back, fit and looking like he might finally fulfill his potential. It sounds so stupid, but he is every chance if his form holds to kick 50+ this year for us.

- Jake Lloyd. Great game tonight - arguably his best in his career. Has taken another step up this year. 34 Possessions @ 85% efficiency, and his tank continues to improve.

The negatives

- Tippo :(
- New season but same old dribble from the yellow maggots. That #16 was a disgrace tonight. Yet again huge calls, at huge moments in a big game went against us. That Mills call shows the utter fallacy of the rule in question - like the 3rd man up, teams will milk it at times. And that call against AA - what a ridiculous joke.
- I'm far from convinced by Marsh or Cunningham.
- Another set of mixed performances from the experienced bunch (Hanners/Parker/Kennedy/Jack). Ended up getting a fair bit of the ball and all had their moments, but struggling to impact on the game as we would hope. I have no doubt they will improve - and in a way this is a positive too, as it was as much the younger guys that stood up tonight as the older guys.

...and the commentators COMPLETELY ignore the umpiring issue. Which took up more than half Longmire's press conference.

Mills is having 2nd year blues ATM

Hayward will be the best of picks imo , love florent too

We need a stringer like in our midfield asap , need that break away pace ( Hayward )

If Newman can get more of the ball we could use his skills of HB

Harry lol

Reid shoved it up me again

Aliir is going to be an All Aus

By the standards he set last year yes I agree as i was thinking that last week but his is still better than the average player that it happens too. He is just going and thats all unfortunately and also looks to be short of a gallop.

During the call it got a run
