Autopsy Round 2 vs Bravedogs. Things learnt

I know what you mean BUT how can you handle big moments better if there are genuinely 2 different set of rules. Does that not lend itself to players being poor? Getting frustrated heck even giving up. So maybe if umpires were on their game and fair the big moments are different moments

I know its sour grapes or a cop out to blame umps and people will say ohh but check x stat, but I would argue when it comes to the last 2 v the dogs its a cause for discrepancies in stats and big moments

I try (not duing the game) to be fair and call out if we are shit eg last week

But i dunno, nothing we can do even if it is the umps

Yep I agree...it doesn't help that each time you gain momentum, bang the dogs get a dubious free. It happened in the GF and now again tonight. Maybe I am just being one eyed but I actually think - at least in my mind - I am rather fair when it comes to judging the umpiring (I hate the whole blaming the umpires thing) but the grand final was seriously one of the few times I thought the umpires had a huge influence on the potential outcome of a match and I must say I feel the same way again tonight.

And yes I know we played poorly in parts and being one man down didn't help but the umpires should never have as much influence as they have had the last two matches (we have played the dogs).

...and the commentators COMPLETELY ignore the umpiring issue. Which took up more than half Longmire's press conference.

The commentators on a number of occasions bemoaned the umpiring decisions, particularly that late HTB, the Aliir holding, the deliberate rushed, etc.

Yep. Carey and Ling called a spade a spade. BT was enveloped in some sort of red, white and blue haze.

They've handled the big moments better in all four games though, even ignoring umpire influence.

Confidence. It does wonders.

Having shit taken out of our hands by external influences undermining confidence on the other hand...

Dont know, not thinking that far ahead]

But intensity up

Kids look promising/ready

And upside to come from key players

We've lost the first 2 games. You can lose back to back games during the year too and still be top 4 or Grand Finalists. Looks pretty bad on the injury front but if you take the depleted status and inexperience of the side tonight, the umpiring and look at the effort tonight there is no reason given players returning, improvement from some senior blokes just going atm we could come home with a wet sail. Just have to batten down the hatches for now and start with a win next week. No good playing like we did tonight with the effort and pissing up against the wall next week.

Overall felt a lot better about tonight's game. Gave it a proper crack with an effort that will beat a lot of other teams. Parker, Hanners and Jack haven't even really switched on yet so if they can find form we're still well placed. Much better than the lethargic effort last week.

Just make top 8 there is another bye before the finals this year as well so top 4 isn't as important, if we can get a full fresh squad and for once HAVE SOME LUCK ON OUR SIDE no reason we cant win 4 games in a row in September.

Long way to go in this season yet. Way too early to lose hope.

Exhibit A: If Reid and Buddy can stay on the paddock for the season we are soon going to start wreaking some serious psychological damage on opposition defences. Watch them start to scramble like startled chooks.

It's all falling perfectly into place.

None of this favouritism talk. Horse knew we had to drop a few to take the focus off and start the chorus of Victorian media egos writing us off for the season. That's where we'll lay low, fly under the radar and strike when it matters.

Brillant strategic coaching. Bravo.

Most of the stats we got smashed in

Contested and uncontested pos

Disposal
Etc
Hard when only one of our fab four is actually playing anything resembling decent footy. JPK is going to do a hernia carrying the rest of the midfield on his back.

Reid wow, what a game. Wonder what Collingwood will be offering him. He's looking good.

Parker barely in the middle all night, him and hanners aren't right. Hewett taking Mitchell's time in the middle.

Hayward was great, looks a player. Have that pace and pressure in the forward line with Rohan, Papley and Kizza will keep it locked in there a lot more.

The key to beating the Clarkson and Co game style is come forward defend. Need players reading the play peeling off and intercepting. And consistency in umpiring wouldn't hurt.

Cunners laughing with Wood 10 seconds after the game ended, he just doesn't get it.

After that last effort in the square where Bontempelli just run over him you think he would have already been in the showers. Disgraceful lack of intensity for contest considering the status of the game at the stage.

Interesting to see people declaring Mills can't play the HBF role after he pissed in the Rising Star in that position last year
Great intercept and rebound HBF. Not a genuine tight defender.

I don't like this argument. Mentally tough players HAVE to learn not to let setbacks affect them. When Luke Ablett kicked it to Cousins in 2005, we could have thrown in the towel but 21 blokes said right, we've still got plenty of time to win back the lead, rolled up their sleeves and got to work, and the result was a flag. As a professional you just have to learn to keep playing no matter what gets thrown at you.
