U18 Champs Round 2 - WA vs SA

WA were strong in the contest and were very clean under pressure, they just couldn't convert their midfield dominance into goals, the SA and WA defence dominated most of the play, the SA and WA forwards didn't look dangerous in that game

WA should have won, they were the better team, but kicking 4.11(35) to 7.4(46) and SA's Taheny getting a soft free 20m out in front really cost WA(6 points was worth a lot in such a low scoring game)

WA
Luke Jackson - had to be BOG, or close to it, dominated the ruck and played well in general play, although against short rucks which makes the game less impressive because you would expect a ruck dominance against KPP's, but very good none-the-less
Robertson - toughed it out in the mid then went back pocket for the last quarter and did ok there, tackles well, at least 2 bone crunching tackles that i can remember
Garcia - played well all game being involved in a lot of clean play, kicked a goal late and had a chance at a 2nd that would have put them 3 points behind with over 7 minutes but missed which was the story of the day
Rivers - was in everything from defence got a lot of disposal but seemed to handball a lot or chip it around instead of kick deep or run
Ruscoe - this guy was great off half back, his deep kicking and ability to find a team mate in the clear going forw was great, his willingness to use his body as a battering ram and toughness were also good signs, he is rising in my draft list
Warner - played ok, but his movement and lack of athleticism could be a concern, but he is one tough bugger on the inside
Sharp - was up and down, kicked out on the full twice and generally his disposal was a mixed bag, needs to improve disposal and impact imo
Henry - when he gets it he uses it well, he also should go up a bit in draft boards i would think
Pina - popped up here and there and just seemed to use it well and provide a bit of run and link up out of defence

some decent performances also from O'Driscoll, Thorne, Anderson, Prior, Johnson, Pasini, Taylor, O'Connor (McDonald if he can kick a goal from 40m+)

SA
Gould - took all the kick ins so got 11 free disposals, in general he had a good but not great game, used the ball safely and impacted contests when he could
Edwards - was close to SA's best i felt, got involved in a lot of critical contests early and kept WA at bay
Schoenberg - put in a strong effort to win poss and hand it off to runners or free team mates
Day - a lot of intercept marks and safe disposal, played really well but is a bit skinny and could be bodied out of contests but has good height and reads the ball in flight very well
McEntee - also contributed quite well, got involved here and there and ended up having a good influence
McNeil - was diving on the ball, handing it off, going for runs, he put everything into his game today and impressed with his desperation to compete
Mead - he had an ok day, was forw early which held him back from getting involved, kicked a goal then late went into the mid where he started to get a few more touches
Hilder/Finlay - both had solid intercept marking games, read the ball well and were hard to get through or passed

some decent performances also from Tucker, Pickett (mostly that snap from 40m on the boundary), Park, Morris, D.Stephens, Taheny(2 goals)

WA lacks a good tall forward this year and it really shows. Martin and Mcdonald both lead up at the ball but aren’t big enough.
Thorne, Bennell, Henry, Anderson are too much of the same. Thorne, Anderson and Bennell had very little impact. Anderson is also in the midfield rotation and gets pushed off the ball too easily and doesn’t get enough of it.
Thought Ruscoe and Prior were good in defense and Pascini did his job on the tall forward. Pina wasn’t great today. Fumbled below his knees, got pushed around and was and most of his possessions were cheap sideways kicks.
L Jackson was great in the ruck and Robertson and Garcia were very good again. Need to see more out of Clarke, O’Driscall and O’Connor in the midfield rotations.
Think there will be a few changes for the Allies.

The WA midfield depth was a bit weak compared to the first game without Jai Jackson. He's good in and under and tackles very well despite his size and I thought he played quite solidly against VM that game but perhaps not as noticeable as others, especially to non-WA viewers.

1.5 in the last came back to bite WA in the end....SA were always one goal away in those conditions to get that breathing space needed. Being WA biased I really only focused on the WA boys.....agree about the lack of forward presence up front for WA....up back, I was always pretty confident a Pasini, Ruscoe or Rivers would repel those SA forward thrusts.....Martin and McDonald really struggle kicking at goal....whilst the likes of Henry, Bennell, Thorne and Taylor all are individually electric at times but much the same.....Sharp whilst classy with ball in hand, looks very outside and reluctant to put his body on the line at times...surprising considering he is of a decent size....tho WA does have a plethora of tough inside mids to do all the grunt work I guess.....Luke Jackson looks at home on the ground as he does in the air......looking like a definite 1st round pick......Allies next week....need a big win.....and hope SA get rolled and WA can beat Vic C for carnival honours.....1.5 tho could be the carnival kicker for the WA boys at the end of the day.....

Agreed. McDonald simply not converting.

Taheny is the most naturally talented player in the draft but also one of the most frustrating and lazy. When he goes off he really goes off. Bit of the Troy Menzel’s but just more talented. But talent only gets you so far....let’s hope he makes the most of it.

Loved Jackson last year and still love him, big fan but keen to see how he goes against an actual ruckman.

Otherwise fairly underwhelming game in general, Day showed a lot of ability but needs a hamburger or 50.

Also being at the game yesterday as a non biased observer it was pretty obvious that SA defenders were holding on a lot. Stuff that would normally be picked in AFL. It was actually embarrassing blatent arm grabbing and jumper pulling as the inside 50s kept coming in for WA. Did anyone else notice?

Just the one game this week, but it's the pick of the bunch. Saturday June 15, 11am at Optus Stadium.

Curtain raiser for the Fremantle/Port Adelaide game, so I'd recommend Fremantle fans get down there early to check it out. Doesn't look like there's a TV broadcast, so YouTube will be the best bet again.

Is freitag draft worthy?

40-60 range for me,or a rookie pick. Has some AFL attributes but would be one of those pick and develop types.

Probably wouldn't see play in season one or even 2.
You must have seen more in him than I, looks state level at best on that performance. Doesn't look particularly athletic to my eye.

Actually thought it was selfish, could of given it off to player running central. Sidestepped spun went towards boundary for low percentage option. Does this a lot.

I noticed the player that he kicked too ended up slipping over, I think your thoughts would be different if the mark was taken, those are the types of things people go to the football to see. Team acts are good but individual acts of brilliance are what make footy so exciting.

It's also easier to teach someone to take that option than it is to teach someone those sidesteps.

That's fine, no doubting his talent but I still stand by what I wrote and know, the type of player I would prefer in my side. Reliable and selfless.

At this stage, I'd imagine any pick coming in late or as a rookie for Freitag. Anytime someone is approaching 200cm and 100kg, it gets them some draft attention. And he's been a good player over the last few years. But he'd need to settle into one role and ideally dominate it. Not many part rucks, part KPPs tend to get drafted. Playing reserves in the SANFL may end up hurting him, because if he dropped back down into the U18s he probably would dominate as a forward.

Exactly my thoughts. At 198 and 100 kegs gives you something to really work with. It's a frame that can withstand adult bodies.

He probably needs to kick a bag at ressies level and be given a crack at league level to show recruiters exactly what he could deliver. Doesn't need to rip a senior game apart, just needs to present all day, show good leading patterns and clunk a few in packs.
