Well in hindsight I would have had Steven and Webster as emergencies so they could have replaced the 2 late outs. Also I would have played battle but we then had to drop a tall back. I’m no fan of brown so out he goes. I don’t think we win anyway but Parker and McKenzie did not deserve a recall.

Agree about Parker and DMac. There must have been a reason Steven and Webster weren’t selected though. Surely they would have been if right to go. That’s a no brainer.

so I missed it live, but watching it now.

First quarter

So far we seem pretty switched on. Haven't played great footy but not terrible either. 3.6 roentgen.

The fifty on Hind was absolute trash, literally moved half a metre at most and was pinned for it straight away. Rubbish free kick. 95% of the time there's a 'Back one metre' call from the ump but the campaigner in yellow saw a chance to be a fwit and grabbed it with both of his delicate little hands.

The comments in here have been pretty damning on Dmac, so far he's been ok. Lost Betts in traffic as he is prone to do, though can't be blamed for bett's mark and second goal.

On that mark; Savage should have punched it but had eyes on the ball and didn't realise betts was closing in. Better yet he should have stuck a knee up or foot out. Blows my mind how little this is used. Anytime there is a chance of on coming traffic when going for a mark, just stick a knee out and protect the space/make your oppo regret running head first into you. Also gives you a good chance of winning a front on contact free. Such a simple technique that doesn't get utilised barely enough.

Bruce presenting well. Membrey also. Coff has been good. Hind and long have had decent quarters. Marshall looks strong and our midfield are winning the clearances.

Second quarter

The McKenzie watch continues. First touch is a lovely hit up pass to Bruce (he misses). Tight intercept spoil on betts a minute later. Hurt him too.

Battle looks so much better in the backline than around the ball, his ball use coming out is first class.

Embarrassing how much the commentary team love their fifty's (metre penalties).

Ok, pathetic effort from McKenzie on the goal line gifts wanna be tough guy walker a goal. Could have taken it on the full but let it bounce, then didn't concede when he should have. Headless chook stuff from a last line defender, not good.

Hunter very strong (in the contest) for a pudgy lookin bong head. Getting some midfield time too which is nice to see. Creative little underground handballs, gonna be a great player for us. Love him.

Long robbed of a nice one handed mark by another pathetic umpiring decision (Umpiring's been pretty pathetic so far).

McKenzie fantastic gather and handpass to lonie for a goal. Took it at pace and put it to lonie's advantage.

Something that really frustrates me with Membrey is how slowly he moves it on after taking a mark on the flank. Midway through the second, billings wins it, fast break, hit's membrey with a short pass.. Players free, Membrey goes to ground then gets up and lopes back from 70 like he's taking a shot. By the time he moves it on adelaide's f50 looks like a ross lyon special.

McKenzie good again on the f50, lonie misses the set shot.

Bruce has been good in the ruck. Being able to take it out of the ruck has been a boon to both bruce and marshall. A bit of luck with the rule changes after the third man up change hurt us so badly last year (or was it the year before?).

Half time

We're playing ok, seem slightly on top but just trailing. No real standout. From the eye: Marshall winning the battle again, hunter has been creative, bruce and members doing their bit, billings quiet, gresham ditto, Battle unsighted, wilkie good, savage good and a better option on betts.

The clearest thing to come out of this game (and the season) is that Dmac CAN play, but is prone to little brain fades, both in concentration when manning a dangerous small, and with micro choices around the goal line. He's touched the ball three times around our forward fifty, and every one of them resulted in us having a shot at goal. Clean pass to bruce in corridor 40 out (miss), sharp gather and handball to lonie (goal), nice gather and shepherd resulting in lonie set shot (miss). Can also mark well.

Maybe we should give him a run in the parker/long role where his mistakes won't hurt us as much.

Imagine lonie playing back pocket... we'd have a lynch mob organised by nightfall

more rambles to come...

Adel 60 more uncontested possesion. Coaching error. They did whatever they liked under no pressure. Gameplan stunk of the old richo style got sucked in again.

Adel 11 more inside 50 tackles

Parker long 1 tackle between them. Long hopeless parker not far behind.

Bruce 1.3 choked on the big stage AGAIN.

ross and billings very little impact.

Battle awful.

Dmac enjoy the next 3 years at sandy. Free money.

Langlangs couldnt get out of a jog after the first 5 mins. Another preseason will help.

Stop shoving coffield down our throat as a defender. Hes awful at it. Push him up to the wing to replace langlands.

Carlisle game has past him too slow. Offers nothing liability. Pushed him forward why its never worked and never will. Trade to contender for top dollar.

Backline.

White brown rice
Wilkie carlisle savage.

5 actual defenders. Wow how novel.

Round 20 Adelaide vs st kilda: 92 vs 70
Round 5 st kilda vs adelaide: 68 vs 97

What an improvement!

Round 4 Melbourne vs st kilda: 55 vs 95
Round 19 st kilda vs Melbourne: 104 vs 85

So yeah slight increase in score but leaking more. Ever slightly in Adelaide. More pronounced vs Melbourne.

Scoring over 100 means literally nothing. It's just an arbitrary line in the sand. What you need to look at is score for vs score against.

I couldn't care if we kick 95 vs 104 in the Melbourne game. 9 points mean nothing. The amount we started to concede is the bigger issue but we win yay. Likewise couldn't care if we score 2 more points vs adelaide. We still didn't close the gap. We lose which is bad.

You say Jake is no good which is not a lot off the mark yet you put him in your back 6

I think it shows some players get pre-judged

No one else at this stage. Maybe marsh but hes a little undersized. Trade carlisle. You can find plenty of good talls in the state leagues. A lot of the great defenders are rookies or late picks. Time for the recruiting staff too earn there money and then some.

H Grundy
Mcgovern
Stewart
Morris
Grimes
Astbury

I could go on but you can how much value there is in the market uptapped.

Well he wouldn’t get you a pick. Bad decision
It was a bad decision giving him a 3 year contract.

Costs us goals regardless of whether we play him forward or back.
Hope he likes Sandy!

That handball DMac gave off to Lonie for the goal. I’ve watched that a few times & come to the same conclusion every time.... Be where the Crows player was, ie: in front of your opponent. Just unlucky that it bounced him & went straight to DMac who was clearly in the wrong position but was ultimately fortuitous in this instance. Definitely not worth claiming this as a great play by DMac, more arsey as * than anything else

he was trailing his player because he was playing back shoulder, he wasn't 'out of position', if that's the case then most defenders are always out of position, just a dumb observation by you.

And as for the handball, it was hard and fast, precise, to the absolute perfect spot for lonie, and he also drew a few defenders to him before shooting it out. It wasn't some 'amazing' play or anything hyperbolic, but he literally could not have executed it any better and deserves to be commended for it.

You've got the blinkers on

yet if he didn't take it cleanly and find Lonie, he would cop criticism for fumbling.
He really can win with people on here.

Clarko is as good a coach as I’ve seen, he’s an innovator and a very good game day coach. How’s that working out at hawthorn without the cattle there, they have the same number of wins as us.

Who do you suggest we take a leap of faith with?
it's funny how people judge it on a week to week basis.

On that logic then we should sign up RTB.

However if we win next week, then we should sign Ratten...

Wow. I’m glad you don’t coach juniors. Trailing at least 5m behind a player with a foot as good as Brodie Smith is poor

I’m not overly upset at last nights game. Highly unlikely we play finals so not a lot to play for.

The game could’ve gone either way if not for a bit of luck on either side of the ledger.

What last night showed is there’s not a lot of difference between us & the Crows. The main difference is they are one of the oldest lists in the league with little room for improvement & we are one of the youngest teams with plenty of room for improvement. Actually, not a lot of difference between 7th placed Essendon & 17th placed Melbourne.

Next year is promising because:
- clean bill of health
- new coach/direction
- no the sack the coach hanging over the players
- new priorities to focus on eg execution & decision making under pressure
- some more talent with top 5-7 pick
- another preseason into the younger blokes

If we get it right finals beckons.
