I’m sure enough doom & gloom has been posted and rightfully so.

I will say we have a bright future ahead and while today sucked, these losses happen.

All about the response now.

From last year's side in the second half of the year we are now missing:

Payne
Joe
Answerth
Oscar (degenerative injury)
Starce (shadow of himself no judgment)

lots of quality height

Morris was doing well but is undersized and getting more attention now

forward line is more functional with day but our mc loves going back to the 2 rucks well!

sides that play 2 rucks have 1-2 guns

carlton
freo

then there is us lol

Contested poss - 161/149. Them

Centre clearance- 19/11. Them

Inside 50s - 64/53. Them

Contested marks - 10/3. Them.

Hit outs & rebounds, stoppages pretty similar.

Looks to me like we were resting ourselves

I think the 2 rucks is about getting Oscar right.

Totally disagree the MC prefers it. Until Oscar came back they seemed pretty happy with Day

Fage's good in his presser-

1- Apart from the first 10 minutes we were poor.
2- We were smashed in stoppages.
3- No warning signs that was coming, we were up and about at training during the week.
4- Their midfield was clearly better than ours today.

Stoppages were 33 to 29 in their favour. That doesn't look like being smashed to me. But im just a fan & not a coach so clearly I don't have a clue.

i didn't say they prefer it. i said they love going back to that well.

as in no matter how many times it fails we bring it back again later

Saving energy for next week haha.
Here's hoping !

On reflection considering the injuries and the overall form of players who were exceptional in the last half of last year we've probably done well to be where we are.

I know we coughed up a couple of games we should've won but that was just reflective of our overall form We toughed it out gallantly to win a lot of games and today the dam wall broke.

I honestly can't see us being a significant threat this year with what we have , but it's not inconceivable if everyone suddenly found form.

I assume Fages has been running with the two rucks because the MC don’t have full confidence in Oscar getting through a game, and the alternative is playing Day in that role who is no world beater himself.

Well I think we have to bite the bullet now and either opt for Oscar back as number 1, or put him out to pasture (sadly) and run with Fort. Playing them both is basically playing with one hand behind our back in the tall department. Neither of them are really offering anything anywhere.

Moving forward into next year hopefully Allen fills that role, or we go all in and invest in his very own helipad for Joe, which I’m down for.

As an aside would a guy’s value, who has ever missed a year of footy, albeit for retirement, have ever gone up as much as Joe’s has this year? To think he was so maligned in the past, I’d have no issue adding him to the $1m club knowing what we now know.

Only team still to play in our part of the ladder who could leap frog us are the crows. Next week is a massive game & if we lose then you could say our season is potentially over but this game does not have us dropping off too much.

So glad i decided to not travel down the M1 for this game due to predicted rain

We have had a few games this year where attitude was absent very early on in the game.
The Pies gave us a thrashing, Melbourne won, and North should have won and now the Suns today.
A few other similar attitude games we got away with a win.
Adding all that up things don't look great.

On the other hand, we win games that i doubt any other team in the comp would have beaten us.
A true Jekyll and Hyde season even though we entered this round in 2nd position.

Time to settle on one ruck to give us some run no matter which opposition we play.
If that means Day returns, or Hippy rucks just stick to that.

I doubt Lohmann returns next week, so start Marshall as wing relief.
Sub, anyone that has shown something in the VFL.

A lot of players are droppable from that game, but that's not Fagans way.

I think to dismiss today as a mulligan would be a touch kind. When the heat went up, their midfield absolutely obliterated ours. The big concern is the way they got out the front towards goal with no pressure resulting in deep inside 50’s.

Oscar and Fort are not doing our mids any favours, but I’d hope we’d look at what went wrong there and how we weren’t at least able to stem the flow.

Another concern - our style doesn’t look overly compelling in wet weather. A high mark kick game is nice on a quick deck, but we’ve got to look at ways to work it out of half back when it’s harder to thread the needle.

Overall, that game is going to galvanise the group, or dent their confidence badly.

I have enough faith that we can come back from this but wow that was a smashing. Can't think of a winner anywhere across the park. Rowell was amazing and we couldn't find an answer. Our forward line structure is not really working for us. No Jack Payne is proving a huge loss as we lose so much of what Harris provides as he has to take the big forwards. Dunkley copped a hiding and I can't remember ever thinking that. He is human after all.
