Pros -

Held together well , especially finishing the game with 3 goals in the last 5 minutes .

Tim Kelly best game for a while looked relaxed and up to the level .

Liam Baker , great game effort was very good .

Flynn toiled hard against the odds .

Harley continued good form , kicking two goals . Certainly cops a bit from the crowd .

McCarthy best MSD pick so far , so poised .
Maric and Hutchinson solid also .

Cons -

Fremantle won .

Wish I could like this twice. Need to cut our losses and go back to East Perth. Cant develop kids in a side worse than we are.
While aligning would be great and would do it in a heart beat.

I think majority of the kids are developing alright? Barnett and Chesser might just be misses. Every club has them. Long and HJ were late picks so might be the same and probably expected.

Dewar, Harley, Shanahan, Ginbey, Maric , Hall, Hough and Gross have all ticked a lot of boxes.

If you don’t take a ball winning accumulating mid at the draft, you probably won’t develop one.

When you wonder why our midfield is so trash just remember after trading away our other picks our list manager got to our remaining first rounder, eyed off the best remaining midfielder in the draft in Murphy Reid and said, 'yeah ok he's a brilliantly skilful midfielder, and granted he was projected to go top 10...and yes it is incredibly lucky he's slipped this far.. but what we are really looking for is a halfback with shit disposal. Is there anyone like that still available?'

I think our depth is developing alright but really need a topline mid to pair with Harley. Hopefully Hewett can get a full preseason in next year and take the step, along with whoever we pick up this year.

Negative for mine today was Ginbey. Had a real mare. Yes there was plenty of supply for Freo but he got soundly beaten and when he did get hands on the ball he either got run down or butchered it by foot.

Took a step back today.
I'd say 'had an off day' is more accurate than 'took a step back'. Done a great job this year.

Never seen a midfield situation quite as dire. I know Hewett and Harley and Hall and Hough will continue to develop but the reality is our mids top out at about 15 touches a game most week. And we have the worst ruck division possibly ever seen in the professional era.

Said in the thread but we have to trade into some good senior mids somehow. And we have to do it this off season.

If we get Dyson Sharp fine but we're still 5 years away from being able to compete consistently with the best midfield groups and we don't have that time to wait.

If we can't get Warner in 2 years we have to get someone else.
Absolutely need some grunt and talent around Harley, in the way of 2x senior midfielders, with decent skills and pace, better than Graham etc.
We desperately need a quality plug+play Ruckman. All this for 2026 season. Can't rely on Yeo or Kelly any more, and players like Hewett, Hough, Hall can grow around this.

Positives
  • Harley chatting to the umps at qtr time and seeking clarity on a few things (future captain stuff)
  • Harley moving himself to Jackson to shake off the tag (maturity and initiative)
  • Reuben's job on Treacy - kept him quiet
  • Last year that would have been a 100-point defeat
  • Kelly kicking a couple of goals
  • Some genuine niggle in the game, felt more like a Derby with feeling

Negatives: This could be a long list, but I'll keep it to
  • Harry injured
  • Harley injured
  • Too many tackles were shrugged off too easily

Agreed, but I will cut him SOME slack because his partner in crime Edwards went down at the last minute. Probably had to take on more responsibility and isnt quite ready for it yet.

The way we setup at stoppage is so frustrating because every time you see the oppo position themselves goalside and then break forward once they win first possession - but our guys just let it happen so they run it out with ease because they are already 5m away from their man.

Hello Luke Shuey - what is your job again?
It’s because they can gamble out the front because they’re likely to win it most times.

Setting up to slow that down is pragmatic and probably overdue, but it’s also not going to be how teams set up against us once we get any sort of remotely decent at footy.

We’ll have a mini resurgence at some stage next year where we’re too good to cheat against but teams haven’t caught on, so we’ll get a purple patch going before they cotton on. Then the real work begins.

Murphy would have requested a trade before the first round was finished. Go home king that has settled into a good side as their 20th option on the half forward with no other responsibility.

Comes to us and has to be our second best mid, he’d have cracked it and left before the jumper was fitted. Huge gamble taking him out of home.

Agreed. Last year was the draft to take that sort of mid but that is what it is.

Now need to pump some ready made talent in there as well as some more kids via the draft. (Crouch 36d in the SANFL, Titchell, Neale🙏) but there should be some decent options a plug and play if we don’t go that old. Class of Harley, Hewett and pick 1 or 2 is a start, now find someone to do the grunt work, link player.

Are we worried about Hewett? I had kind of thrown my eggs in his basket. Was hoping he would pair with Harley as an elite 1-2 punch. I know he’s missed a lot of footy etc etc. but I’m starting to be concerned.
Why? The kid's played a whole 30 games.

Bo Allan is just as much a mid as Murphy Reid you clown.

We've gotta cut and cut deep. Its almost at the point where we have to sack all our senior players and replace them with seniors from outside the club of comparable skill, because there is almost 0 onfield leadership out there. We need blokes who can show the kids how to be footballers.
