Headlines
Southern Dragons secured the minor premiership after accounting for the West Coast Wonders by five points in a close game. The win ensures the Dragons will finish top of the ladder after the completion of the home and away season and earns themselves a bye in the first week of the finals.
Fighting Furies will finish second after being outclassed by the Mod Squad to the tune of 43 points at Junction Oval. Despite losing, the Furies cannot go any further than second but they won't drop any positions either due to the Wonders losing to the top-of-the-ladder Dragons and the gap between the two sides remaining at two games. The Furies will be worried by their indifferent form over the past few weeks and that will need to be resurrected before the commencement of the finals.
West Coast Wonders lost again, this time to the Dragons. The Wonders stay in third though but have the Mod Squad breathing down their neck after they moved into fourth place. The Wonders have had a terrible run of form, their last 10 games has seen them go 2-8 but amazingly they are still third. A loss next week could see them slip to fourth and away from the double chance.
The Mod Squad move into fourth after upsetting the Furies at home. It was a comfortable win to the Mods who have won their past two matches and are beginning to gather some momentum with the finals not far away. The win also secured a spot in the finals for the blue and green men who cannot drop below fourth place now. They remain a chance for third but face a tough assignment in the final round, travelling to Dragon Island to meet the Southern Dragons.
East Side Hawks drop to fifth place with their good form suddenly eluding them at the most crucial time of the season. The Hawks have lost their last two and must win in the final round to secure a finals berth. Had the Hawks not received any penalty points during the year they would sit third and have a finals spot all but wrapped up.
Baghdad stay sixth but are right in the hunt for a finals spot after proving to be too good for the East Side Hawks. Baghdad must win next week and hope the Hawks lose in order for them to sneak into the top five as they cannot overtake the Hawks on percentage due to a poor points for and against record. A loss might see them drop to seventh if the Gumbies can win in the final round of the season.
Geelong are out of the finals race after losing the last-placed Demons. The loss means Geelong cannot make the finals as their percentage is too poor to overtake the Hawks and to add to that they remain one win away from fifth place. Geelong would also have to rely on the Bombers not tasting victory in Round 21. However, it is unlikely the Gumbies will finish last as only a points penalty and a Demons win would see them slip to eighth and the wooden spoon.
Mount Buller made it two in a row after defeating Geelong and thus ending the Gumbies chances of playing in September. However, the win was not enough to get them off the bottom and only a win coupled with a severe points penalty to the Gumbies would see the Demons not win the wooden spoon.
One game to go and only one place in the finals is up for grabs. Only two teams can take that last spot, East Side and Baghdad with the Mods and Wonders still to squabble over third place. The final round, Round 21 looks set to be a cracker.
