From a league win perspective I don't understand why so many people are picking a VC that plays before Ablett. Surely there is a lot more to gain from picking a C after Ablett plays.

Eg. If you had VC SJ and he scored 145 what would you do? Gamble on Ablett not beating 145?

Personally I would prefer gamble on the score that is not Ablett's. Which IMO is really only worthwhile if I already know Ablett's score.

So tell me, do you see the VC player as the 'gamble' or the 'insurance'?

Then, do you see Ablett as the 'gamble' or do you see him as the 'insurance'?

If you don't see GAJ as the 'insurance', whose score do you think would be?

Gambling to beat Ablett's score (&knowing what Ablett's score is) >>> Gambling that a players score will be better than Ablett's (without knowing Ablett's score)

So, say GAJ scores 125 on Sat, what would you do?

It depends on how I'm scoring compared to my opponent. If it looks likely that I will win by locking in that 125 then I will do it. On the other hand if it is close or I need to make up extra points then I will go the POD and select Barlow.

Obviously that is a problem. Then you may risk Fyfe or a Watson, by that stage you'll also have a fair indication of how you're teams travelling, if you pick GAJ as VC. Then you'll have a better idea of what RISK you might need to take.

Makes sense to me.

Barlow - only 4 games out of 17 this year has gone 125+ (23.5%), so to me, that would be odds not in my favor of this working out (I know they're playing GWS, but it doesn't always work that way),

I just can see why most using the captain's loophole would like the assurity of a 'free swing' with the VC, with GAJ batting next,

hoping a SJ (for example) hits 170, if not, the next guy covering him has the best ave in the competition,

But I can see what you are getting at, especially if GAJ has the VC and only scores 100 (ie rd 19), most would have him as Captain and could provide a good POD to hopefully gain a few points with a Barlow, Jobe or Cox,

:) :thumbsu:

If its about gaining points on the competition then I always try and pick GAJ as VC (purely on the basis that if he scores poorly all those who chose him as captain are stuck with it and i then get an opportunity to "calculated gamble" on someone going bigger than GAJ.
Of course it does require a non-playing player later in the round to exploit.
But for mind it is a risk assessment and I like to take it

With Buddy out, then i'm going to whack the VC on Roughead. If he doesn't dominate the Saints undersized defence i'll be shocked.

I think you'll see Blake go to Ruff ;)

And Ruff will dominate! He's going to be the main target inside 50 with Buddy out. And after losing to the Tiges you'd think the Hawks would want to make a statement.

To an extent you're right. However, its about maximizing your points... if you apply your rule every week, you will miss out on any monster scores that play before Ablett every week. Use the VC loophole to maximise your score, not only to beat your opponent.

The problems is, who can you put the C on after Ablett's match is completed you will need to have a spare player to run the loophole on whose team hasn't completed??? That's 6 games in leaving your loophole player a sub and a captain coming from one of only 6 sides: Essendon, WCE, Adelaide, NM, Freo, GWS.

So not everyone has the luxury of doing it that way.

It all involves what time Gaz is playing, Early in the round would be VC, someone else C
It also depends on when your non-playing player is aswell. Bit difficult this round with a Saturday night!
My opponent this week has gone SJ VC, Gaz C
While I have Gaz VC, Watson C (Atm)
In all likelihood, we will both end up having Gaz with double points lol

All of my players are playing except for Max Gawn, but since they are playing Gold Coast I can't even really do the loophole this week :(

Just have to pray that Ablett tears it up

I have zero chance of winning overall. At this point in time winning my cash league and beating my opponent is my only goal... I will continue to make Ablett my VC. I can understand that if you are a chance of winning the 50k or that you are not in a cash league, that the Ablett VC strategy is no where near as appealing, as it is for my situation.
