Review Round 21 vs West Coast

Depressingly inevitable that we'd be number 1 on the seven plays in seven days segment. I've deliberately not watched the replay of 'that' moment, and I'm absolutely gobsmacked at the room McGovern had. He basically took it uncontested. :(
Where was Doogs? Where was anything resembling a plan. We hear of teams practising these scenarios, Ken said as much when
we Motlop'ed them. In the euphoria of a dramatic win IIRC he said that we set up for these last minute plays.
After last week it was left to assistants like Voss to trot out "things happen so quick".
Whatever happens tonight watching Essendon I doubt we can beat them next week. Our new game plan for tomorrow is to take the game on.
In total desperation we've decided on wholesale change. Sounds like an under-age school team footy coach searching for a solution.

Wines also copped it a heap for missing a gettable shot and barely anything was said about Robbie missing two.

Ollie was 15m out and missed the lot by 20m!

Robbie had 2 tougher bloody shots. I have bagged Robbie in the past for missing shots 25m-30m out straight in front or bugger all angle, said that sort of stuff up stops him being labelled a great, but it was a bloody swirly breeze he had to deal with.

His first shot he kicked 50m out on the 45 degree angle right on the T. He was on the limit of his distance and tried to kick it too hard and missed kicked it a bit for a shank to the left.

and his second one the mark was about 42m out but Robbie kicked it he was 47m-48m out as the Fox Footy graphic said he would kick it from - both kicks on the limit of his distance.

You're absolutely right REH but if he had kicked one of those, we win. The second one should be completely gettable and you can see that on the graphic.
It would just be so nice to have a player stand up and take control in a big moment like that.

Look where Ollie is. Hands on hips about 15m up towards goals from the T (telstra) mark on the 50m arc as Wingard is passing to Clurey. Where is mid fielder, high half forward Boak?. Ebert, with the orange boots is out by the boundary but doesnt do enough to get Clurey's attention to kick it to him. Clurey could have pushed back off the mark 20m and done the chip to Ebert as Ebert made a lead towards him. Ebert 40 seconds later over runs the ball near the T.

In the past 20 years who have been our big moment players who crave responsibility and repeatedly come through? Not infallible mind, but regularly came up big and executed when the chips were down, or the spotlight was massive.

Wanganeen? Monfries? Wingard? Gray?

There haven't been too many.

The Mayor of Brisbane, Roger James could be relied upon.

Clurey followed team rules and went long to the pocket. It wound up being a two on one but the one was Robbie Gray. He's the one player you would kick to in hope. If the ball had swung a few more metres to the left and been forced out of bounds instead of being marked, Clurey would have been a genius. Any sot of chip kick was fraught because West Coast are well drilled in picking them off.

Maybe the team rules are the problem? If the team rules are to go long to the pocket in this situation why hasn't a tall made it over to the pocket? Clurey could have wound down the clock while Westhoff or Watts made it to the pocket. Clurey rushes it and none of our talls even look at the pocket let alone make an effort to help Robbie Gray. Team rules maybe but there is also an element of dumb football to it.

Not sure what any of this has to do with KT although I guess he had a hand in re appointing the person who is ultimately responsible.

Unfortunately it has happened way too many times in close games and we always end up on the wrong side, our composure is definitely an issue.
Our mental toughness and work rate are also big issues. How our work rate can continue to be an issue given the coaches mantra is unbelievable. The team lacks want and steel and it has for years.

Schulzy’s immaculate goal kicking got us out of jail a few times.

Every team does what what Clurey did. Richmond were doing the same thing last night when Essendon were coming at them. It's a common tactic..

Every other option people come up with have inherent risk and can result in turning the ball over in a worse position. It's easy to say he could have done this or that but go through other games and you'll find where these options have failed too. Players take too long to make a decision, kicks miss targets.

Clurey took a reasonable option and one that is taken by any player in any game. We should have been able to defend a length of the field goal. We should have been able to defend a centre bounce. We should have been able to defend a rushed kick forward.

Clurey shouldn't be hung out to dry for that kick is my point.
