Carlton v St.Kilda
St.Kilda recorded their ninth win of the season after roaring back from two goals down in the final two minutes to record an upset win over the finals hopeful Dockers, with Josh Bruce kicking the winner with under a minute left. Jack Steven was back to his absolute best, kicking three important goals as the Saints continue their hot run of form under interim coach Brett Ratten
As for Carlton, they were competitive against premiership favourites Richmond at the MCG last Sunday afternoon, going down eventually by 28 points despite a commendable effort. It was the fourteenth loss of the season for Carlton, but not a reflection of their recent form which has been very promising under David Teague.

St Kilda's Nick Coffield appears likely to miss the remaining two games after dislocating his right shoulder in the first term – a disappointing result for a youngster who had made solid progress in recent weeks. Rowan Marshall looked lucky to escape a dreaded ACL injury to his left knee in the first quarter but, after being treated and tested, returned to the field for the start of the second quarter with the joint strapped and played out the contest seemingly without any further issues. Josh Bruce received stitches to a facial cut, also in the first term, while Josh Battle had a profusely bleeding nose in the last quarter but returned to take an important mark in defence in the dying seconds..
For the Blues, aside from Mitch McGovern spending the opening eight minutes of the second half on the bench, it was a quiet day.

After St.Kilda's slim finals chances were dashed last Saturday night against Adelaide, they looked towards ending the season in good form, and took one step closer to that last Sunday afternoon after beating finals fancies Fremantle by 3 points at Marvel Stadium in what was one of the games of the round. After trailing by 2 goals with less than two minutes to play, it was the class of Jack Steven and the goal kicking prowess of Josh Bruce that took St.Kilda to an unlikely but famous victory. Revelation forward-turned-backman Josh Battle with the game saving mark in the dying seconds typified the Saints performance & refusal to give up.
In what was one of the best wins of the Saints season, it was four time Trevor Barker medalist Jack Steven who stood up for the Saints in his return from illness. Stuv was everywhere on the night and played a lot of time as a deep forward, capitalising on good work up the ground to kick three goals for himself including a critical goal late, and went on to collect 22 disposals and 7 marks while he was at it to be judged St.Kilda's best player of the afternoon.
Other notable performances included returning midfielder Dan Hannebery (23 disposals, 6 marks, 6 tackles & 2 goals), Seb Ross (28 touches, 2 marks, 9 tackles), Hunter Clark (26 possessions, 6 marks, 4 tackles) and Jack Billings (27 disposals & 8 marks).
Carlton started the first half of the year very poorly which included the sacking of now former coach Brendon Bolton. Since then the Blues have been very impressive, beating quality opposition on the way to lift themselves from the bottom of the ladder and give interim coach David Teague a legitimate chance at securing the senior position for the 2020 season whilst also having the full support of the Blues faithful.
Carlton's form line is deceiving as mentioned, so taking a look at their record after the coaching change shows a more accurate depiction of where the Blues are at right at this moment - with losses against Western Bulldogs, Melbourne, West Coast & Richmond however some impressive victories against Brisbane, Fremantle, Sydney, Gold Coast & Adelaide.
Their more consistent form continued on Sunday afternoon and despite the 28 point loss against Richmond the Blues were very competitive.
Defender Liam Jones was voted the Blues best on the day with 10 disposals and 4 marks in a defensive shut down role, but Jones wasn't alone with the likes of Patrick Cripps (37 touches, 2 marks, 7 tackles), Ed Curnow (34 disposals, 2 marks, 8 tackles) and ruckman Matthew Kreuzer (47 hit-outs from 8 touches and a goal) providing valuable assistance throughout the afternoon.
Potential changes
After the injury to youngster Nick Coffield, Jimmy Webster is no longer on the Saints injury report and could finally make his return to the senior team after a long absence.
Other potential changes could be Jade Gresham, Matthew Parker & Nathan Brown.
Key Match-Ups
Patrick Cripps
Every time we write these previews against Carlton, one name is always constant. Patrick Cripps. As one of the premier midfielders in the AFL, Cripps' ability to turn a game off his own boot is evident, and after 37 disposals and 7 tackles against the premiership favourites last weekend, it doesn't look like much will change on the weekend. It will be all about limiting his effectiveness. Jack Steele & the Saints midfield know Cripps will get plenty of the ball - it's just whether or not he will be able to do anything with it.
Matthew Kreuzer
Kreuzer's 47 hit-outs on the weekend is a huge effort from the Blues veteran ruckman, and St.Kilda's ruck Rowan Marshall will have his work cut out for him again on the weekend. If Marshall is still troubled by the knee he hyper-extended last weekend, it could change the course of the game.
Tip
Both teams aren't playing for much more than pride on Saturday afternoon, and both David Teague & Brett Ratten will look to continue their impressive starts as interim coaches at their respective clubs. St.Kilda beat Carlton back in Round 10, and on form the Saints look the better side. I think we will be too strong for the Blues, and we play the MCG well.
