It worries me Hartley is an emergency, Could Frost or Hartigan be injured?
Hartley isn't a bad footballer, the issue is that every time he plays we get flogged in the midfield, which means he's under constant duress as a key defender. Even the very best defenders of bygone eras have struggled when the opposition gets a run on in the middle

against the doggies midfield that is rough

ah well, good exposure for some of the new blokes against the best mid in the comp
midfield rotation of
Burgoyne, Shiels, Wingard, Titch, Philips, Howe, Morrison, Scrimshaw Nash, Hanrahan, Bramble, Newc, & Downie is quite inexperienced.
5/13 over 100 games played, 6/13 less than 50
It's weird, but the loss of JOM feels massive from an on-field leadership pov

if Burgoyne plays this week and next week he has 250 hawks games and is he retiring this year,

Would be very appropriate if he finishes his career against the Tigers, too, given they were his first opponents in Hawks' colours - the `Mitchell-tackle game' that rescued our season back in round 8, 2010.

I remember being concerned the Burgoyne trade was a bust when he missed the first 7 rounds, coming off his injury-affected final year at Port. But to the bloke's immense credit, he's barely missed a game since.

He missed the first few games due to a busted jaw thanks to a very friendly Max Rooke playing against Geelong in the VFL

Imagine if that mentality was taken into the final rounds of last season and Dylan Moore didn't get his career saving game against Gold Coast in round 23.
There was no genuine second tier comp for Moore to prove himself in last season. If they wanted to get one last decent look at him before making a call on his future then it had to be at AFL level.

This season young players have had the chance to prove themselves in the VFL and got opportunities in the senior side on the back of those performances.

And they've also had the unique opportunity to play each week under the incoming senior coach. Sam would already have a very good read on them all. If he felt like he needed to see any of them play at AFL level before making a call on them then that player would be in the team.
