It's been a while since we've managed to get through a full season of VFL, but we're up to the final round of the home & away season and finals beckon for the Hawks. But first, a match against the Swans to negotiate and one that could have significant implications for the final order of the finals. The Hawks come into the final round of the home & away season sitting fifth on the VFL ladder on 44 points, with a percentage of 124.0%. The Swans come down to Melbourne sitting on 48 points with a percentage of 126.9%. Therefore, a win by Box Hill (depending on the margin) would see the Hawks go above the Swans and get the double chance (they would also face off against the undefeated Casey Demons in the first week of the finals). For the loser, their fate is somewhat uncertain, as Collingwood and the Suns are currently level on 44 points with Box Hill.
Going into the final round of the home & away season, these are the matches to keep an eye on:
For their part, Collingwood look to be set in the top eight, but could still make the top four if Box Hill lost and the Suns lost (or their margin of victory over North Melbourne is insufficient to make up the difference in percentage).
From an individual player perspective, Fergus Greene
has an opportunity to win the Frosty Miller Medal for leading VFL goalkicker. The Suns' Chris Burgess
had been leading the pack for most of the season, but Burgess kicked 3.4 against the Sharks last weekend to go to 47 goals for the season so far, while Greene kicked five goals against the Cats to give him 49 goals for the season. Without trying to mozz either player, it's been a long time since the VFL has seen a goalkicker with 50+ goals in a season - the last time was when Dean Galea kicked 55 goals for Port Melbourne back in 2013. Since then, the closest we got was Ahmed Saad
in 2016 (49 goals). Indeed, Sam Grimley shared the honour with Dan Connors back in 2014 with 38 goals.
Both clubs come into the match with some good form under their belts, having won their previous four games consecutively. The Hawks handled the Cats at Box Hill City Oval last weekend, kicking 14.13.97 to defeat the Cats by 43 points (7.12.54), while the Swans had a narrow, three point victory over Collingwood in Sydney (10.7.67 to 9.10.64). In fact, the last loss suffered by both teams happened to be against the Southport Sharks. The Hawks lost to Southport at home on 9 July (8.11.59 to 10.14.74) while the Swans lost to Southport up in Queensland on 15 July (9.12.66 to 6.8.44).
With so much at stake, it promises to be a terrific afternoon of football. As usual, the match will be streamed live via AFL.tv, and 3WBC 94.1FM will provide radio broadcast of the game. The Box Hill Hawks twitter feed will provide regular score updates.
