Rayner is our X factor coming into finals , be sure of that. Not predictable he has the belief against any team to tear them apart. He is getting better every week , could do anything in september

Well done cam

Cam's best game. Don't expect it every week. But he has had better moments this year than he's ever had so we just hope he can put it all together more often over the next few years.

Not thinking about it too much, it was a game we could've easily lost that we won ,happy to move on to next week.

Last game at the Gabba is a big help for us.

It's amazing how much better our midfield functions with Matho in the team.

He isn't easily knocked off his line, has very good hands in tight and commits lock down tackles.... Not a super star.... but a critical piece around our stars like Neale and Clugga.

We're able to manage the big bodied midfielder in opposition much better now.

I enjoyed Mooney identifying the forward line as the Achilles heel in the highest scoring team in the comp.
He doubled down as well. He should stick to entertainment, not serious analysis.

Frustrating after how positive the Carlton game was to crash back to a mid range team. Almost the entire midfield played well against Carlton which is what we’ll need in finals but last night it was only Clug and centre clearances.

We also didn’t arrest the momentum in the last. They absolutely smashed us and owned the territory. It was only their poor goal kicking and Adams brilliance that got us over the line

Think it was a poorer effort than the last 2 weeks. Hopefully the pre finals bye freshens us up so we get to see one more win this season

A mid range team in the tightest competition I've seen in 15 years.

And saints were playing for finals. They were always going to play out of their skin.

And our boys getting smashed after a five day break.

Think all things considered it was an awesome effort

CarterS mentioned on the main board thread that Cam kicked 4 out of our 5 second half goals. That's great, but also a bit of a concern. The inability of our key forwards to clunk a mark and kick straight when the pressure is on is a big worry going into finals. That was the knock on us from some corners prior to Daniher and unfortunately seems set to continue.

Positive/negative: We should have absolutely buried them Geelong-style nice and early. Never seen us control a game like that without impacting the scoreboard as much.

Positive: Saints just started moving the ball better (more intelligently with short kicks) and quicker in the second half. The most pleasing aspect of this all is that we found a way to stop all that run and create our own chances. Feels like this won’t get talked about in the media as much but it showed some good desperation and maturity from the boys.

Negative: Still have some match up issues with certain teams. What’s with Mason Wood bursting past 5 of our players and kicking a goal? He was opportunistic all night long, but it also felt like he had zero attention all night long by any of our players.

One that absolutely ticked me off when watching the game from the stands was how Membrey was all alone for 3 (?) of his goals. I was fully expecting the guy to just start laughing at one stage, that’s how easy it got for him. What was going on there? I think Starce was responsible for him at stages, but forgot to man up or something. Frustrating beyond hell.

Overall I’d probably give us a 7/10 for that performance. Things to work on as always but the finals brand of footy is starting to come back.

Our forward group was what won us the game last night in my opinion. Cam was assisted with his goals despite it sounding like he did it on his own. Our defensive pressure was great and our attack on the ball was also very good. Clunking a mark is great for us supporters to enjoy watching but really, providing they dont get out marked by their opponent (which they did not all night) and bring the ball to ground for our roving forwards to go to work, they are doing a great job.
The other significant factor when talking about our forwards clunking marks is how the ball is delivered into them. Our lack of clunking marks will probably continue while often the ball comes into our forward 50 like a grenade out of a bunker however, we still find a way to capitalise on that like no other team in the competition.

Not sure on what our I50's were after half time but they seemed starved. Thought the Fwd's were very good last night.

I understand that point of view and goal is a goal regardless of who or how it is kicked. The worry for me is that we have 3 decent key forwards and in the last 3 weeks they have combined for a total of 4 second half goals (from my casual perusal of match timelines). 1 each to Hippy (v Richmond), Daniher (v St Kilda) and Mcstay 2 (v Carlton). Need more than that. Understand it does require more opportunities for them though.

Alot of people unhappy with a solid win away against a team with everything to play for. I also want us to be smashing teams with 10 goal hammerings but it just doesn't happen that often. I felt it was a game where neither side took the most of their opportunities when ontop, while taking all of them on the rebound. In the first quarter we had 10 scoring opportunities from 16 I50s for a return of 3 goals 2 behinds.

Otherwise it was great to see us win some big center clearances and goal directly from them. The big O played a dominant game, really looking forward to seeing how he goes against Gawn next week. He's in great form. Surprisingly I read this from the AFL match statement:
"Second most center bounce points this season"
"Second most score launches from kick-ins"

Is that just a nature of us being the highest scoring team? Center bounces have been a pet peeve of mine personally and I know our kick INS get alot of discussion around here too.

You must think less of the list then me

We've been doing this for 4 seasons now. Some fans want more

I thought Payne played a really good game last night. He seemed very composed, marked well and defended and kicked well too. I hope with Gardiner resigning that he doesn’t start looking for a trade to another club. He really deserves an extended run in the seniors but always seems to be rated behind both Gardiner and Adams. I’m not sure what more he can do to cement his position, but much as I like Gardiner I think Payne has become
a more reliable defender this year. Tough call for the selectors coming into the finals.

No linky, but I thought Matho came across quite well. BT gave him the 4 flights voucher and he was quite gracious. Pretty low key interview.
He's been coached on his media presence pretty extensively and I suspect he is petrified of messing up and ruining his senior chances. Lot's of authentic humility there. I quite like it to be honest.

Matho has thrived by being given the opportunity to take on a midfield role that suits all of his strengths and circumvents most of his weaknesses. His defensive work in the middle doesn't require high levels of skill or concentation really, just ferocity and effort and tackling. He's been making abslute sure than his tackles, stick, are carried through to conpletion, and that they always hurt. His sucess there is giving him confidence, but not overconfidence if that BT interview is any indication.

There was a play that I kinda fuzzily remember that I can't find a replay for. It seemed like Hugh, in the middle, took possession, completed what was almost a pirouette where he drew a number of Saints players, braced and launched a volley handball over the top which then led to a goal.

It could have been a hallucination though.
