There was a play that I kinda fuzzily remember that I can't find a replay for. It seemed like Hugh, in the middle, took possession, completed what was almost a pirouette where he drew a number of Saints players, braced and launched a volley handball over the top which then led to a goal.

It could have been a hallucination though.
Definitely happened, almost lost his balance as his did the spin but kept his composure and gave a great hand pass

The strange thing about watching Hugh play is that he always look like right on the edge of losing his balance, while also simultaneously looking as sure footed as a mountain goat.

Matho has thrived by being given the opportunity to take on a midfield role that suits all of his strengths and circumvents most of his weaknesses. His defensive work in the middle doesn't require high levels of skill or concentation really, just ferocity and effort and tackling. He's been making abslute sure than his tackles, stick, are carried through to conpletion, and that they always hurt. His sucess there is giving him confidence, but not overconfidence if that BT interview is any indication.

This must be shitty "insufficient intent to keep the ball in" week - after the one last night, the umpires just picked one out to the Dogs because the ball bounced off the ground into a Giants' player leg and it rolled out.

Gee the commentators totally didn’t understand the one paid against the saints. Massive deflection/smother of the lions kick, umpire yelling “touched” and the saints player by himself still punched it over the boundary. Correct call by the ump. The one against Payne was laughable though.

That hurt my brain, I’m some random nuff at home and I understood that rule

Yeah, that one was pretty obvious. No marking contest, can't just punch it over.

It's Russian Roulette on those.

The worst thing that happened to us last night was when the Saints player punched it out deliberately because the crowd gave the old bronx cheer any time any one of our guys miscued resulting in Payne giving away one when he was actually bumped into it and another silly one from memory.

My pet hate re umpiring is letting the game go ,ignoring ones that are 90% there and because they haven't paid anything for a while pluck out a tiggy touchwood one. The 50 against Neale was frankly an abominable decision. And King was getting on a bit of a run so it seemed right that he should get the one against Harris where there was nothing there at all apart from him tripping himself up.

just watched the game

dont know why people were ostensibly melting. thought we played better than st kilda. they had oppurtunities in the back half but our backline put the pressure on to make sure they had to fight for every inch. same as their backline did to us when it was parked in our forward line in the first half of the game. they might have missed some chances but so did we.

cam obviously the main takeaway. dangerous all over the ground. think if he improves his tank and defensive part of his game he could easily be a top 10 player in the competition.

big o backed up a great game with another excellent effort.

didnt mind some of the frees given away by players going in to bat for neale. make the tagger know about it. speaking of which didnt see the saints really do anything to matho which is odd considering steele basically a non-factor

lot to work with in payne, didnt do much wrong and a lot of good defensive effort. would be sad if we lost him due to lack of opportunity but who does he replace? thought all of our talls defenders were fine. think only 2 of king's chances could be really attributed to him besting andrews. noticed rich had a lot more defensive efforts than he has had in the last few to go with his usual kicks, was pretty good for mine

my votes: rayner, mcinerney, rich, mathieson, starcevich

God Dermott Breretton hates Matho. Can't help himself with the little sly remarks every time he mentions him.

Today on SEN I heard he, Hodgy and Whately talking about King and how he should be more tough and not let oppo players get in his face etc....in pipes Dermie saying he saw Matho giving it to King trying to win a free as is his go yadda yadda yadda!!

Fair dinkum I wanted to jump inside that damn radio and smash his face in! (even tho I'm a very placid old lady!);)

Next time Dermie comments our game, just listen to him, at some stage he will mention Matho trying for a free kick.

That’s because that’s exactly what he does. He’s always playing for free kicks.

Every time Dermie opens his mouth as a commentator he is metaphorically standing on his own head while his logic is prone on the ground. He is a cartoon character, trapped in a meme devised by a 14 year old and he is the only person who actually thinks he is worth listening to.

Loves the sound of his own voice, dunt he.

Nine things we learned: Lions find their finals X-factor

1. Cam Rayner can be Brisbane's September wildcard

So much is spoken about Brisbane's key forward trio Joe Daniher, Eric Hipwood and Dan McStay in the club's chase of a flag. Throw Charlie Cameron into the mix and there are big names who can turn a game on its head. But Cam Rayner's influence shouldn't be underestimated, with the exciting forward shaping as a finals wildcard for the Lions. His performance against St Kilda on Friday night, when he kicked four goals, including three in a brilliant last quarter, was one of his best in Lions colours. He's capable of producing big moments at big times and will enter the finals with confidence. Brisbane missed his X-factor in the finals last year. - Callum Twomey

Rayner brilliant - Oscar very good - McCluggage consistently good. Not much else to take from that match. We came off a 5 day break and they kicked poorly so we take the win and move onto a huge match this Friday.

We just have to win Friday night. Hopefully Ah Chee and Adams are good to go. Daniher needs to play a big game. Not allow May to dictate.
