Autopsy Round 23 Sydney v. Geelong

It wasn't that Geelong were better it was that they got in the head of Sydney's leaders and their ego wouldn't let them not retaliate. Not a personnel issue, it was an attitude issue. You cannot expect the younger players to be team first and display the correct attitudes when the leaders aren't.
I thought Geelong were a lot better.

They gave up ,, so I can’t be arsed either

The laugh reacting to every Campbell criticism is a pathetic as the swans effort by the way nfi
To be fair, it does get tiresome seeing the same few people target the same player/s after each game - win, lose or draw.

He wasn't great by any means, but was far from our worst today.

I thought Warner was one of our only players to look somewhat dangerous today.

Everything Cleary touched just went to shit. He even nearly stuffed up the beautiful chain started by Blakey for Paps' first goal.

Campbell getting shrugged off by Stengel and then hoisting it to a 1-on-4 instead of having a ping from 50 sums him up. Just needs to dial up the intent and aggression 30%.

On the other hand I like Buller's willingness but that's about it. Gets completely lost between the arcs and every set shot is an absolute crapshoot.

Mills had a couple of clangers but again was good defensively and was trying to be aggressive. I'd be excited for him to get some time in the middle.

Heeney let O'Connor get into his head but the way their battle today was umpired was a genuine disgrace.

  • Ok first half, where skill errors were the only reason we trailed. Extremely poor second half, they checked out tbf...which is a bit disappointing because we're trying to get that jogging stuff out of the system, but at the end of the day not much to play for.
  • We missed Grundy big time. Ladhams was good though, although Stanley makes most rucks look like superstars. If Ladhams is serious though he leaves somewhere where he'll get a crack at 1st ruck, cause it's the only position he can play well. If we're serious we'll extract as much value as we can when he leaves.
  • Today just highlighted how poor our tackling is. Would be close to worst in the comp, oppo always has a release, we're the only club that doesn't seem to train 'pin the arm'. Huge emphasis needed on tackling this offseason.
  • Liked the handball game early, and hope we keep working on it over the summer. Made a lot of basic skill errors though, really basic skill errors.
  • Do we need to take our absolute best side to WC next week, maybe just give a few a taste and rest a couple stars or older players, at the end of the day if it cost us a result will it really matter?

Out: Hayward Papley Rowbottom Lloyd
In: Bice Corey Leidler Hanily
Sub: Hanily

Not sure I'd bring back Grundy, give him an early break.

If Fox wasn't injured today re: late VFL out, and he's finishing up, would play him instead of Leidler.

I find the Campbell teeing off on here so off also. There's so many worse than him.
Mills was off today. We don't give Mcinereny enough credit. Hes an important player. that we miss.
We lack capable contested marks that Geelong seem to have on every line. Or was it just our bad decision making and kicking choices.
Geelong were switched on for this and it meant so much to them and maybe not so much to us. Umpiring was awful.
Some key tackles missed allowed the game to change and for us to really not be in it after that point.
Maybe today it really was simply about what was at stake for each team.
I hate the way we spoil our own players who are about to take a mark. It seems so panicky at times.

It's not worth worrying about. Much better to watch the game and let others rack up the posts.

Deserved criticism at times today. I simply do not understand why he doesn't back himself from 50. His goalkicking has suffered this year, so needs to get that back on track.

But given he's had a decent year in some thankless roles at times (not that some notice), the quantity of posts about him is laughable.

Didn't have high expectations today was always going to be hard ...regardless of their draw Geelong look like a top four team and have quality all over the park.
Typical of the season started well Cats got going end of first quarter and kept getting better and we dropped off.
Ladhams has surprised me this year and was probably b.o.g for us.
The lack.of a functional forward line has been an issue all year especially with Amartey and McDonald out. Papley has been down on form or injured although he was better today. Buller isn't a bad option hopefully with a full list next year him and McLean can fight for the chop out ruck position.
We are far too Heeney centric and he needs more support from the senior players , he was really losing his rag today which shows how frustrated he was.(Umpires didn't help)
Only one more game this year be glad to get it done and concentrate on having a decent pre season and hopefully trading to fill some holes in our list.

Geelong are the one team where I can watcg us get soundly beaten in every aspect of the game, and still FEEL like they rely on the ups. Just feel like a scummy team how much they hold and grab and push, knowing that if the same was done to them they'll get a free.

Absolute disgrace to just go into holiday mode as soon as the cats got going.

Club owes everyone attended refunds

Charging patrons to come in and watch that sort of effort is criminal
That is an overreaction. They’re bigger and better than us, and they had something to play for. It was a dead rubber for us.

It’s disappointing we lost like it always is, but sometimes you have to be realistic. We were always losing this one. Last week was our last big push. Today went pretty much as expected and it’s a mistake to read much into it. It means literally nothing. The game will be well and truly forgotten in a few weeks.

We’ll win next week. It also won’t mean anything. The season is over.

They are a four or five goal better team. McClean and Buller can't compete against there backing with that sort of entries.
Poor decision and skills let them in whilst we were up .
Rampe has to retire... the bad outweighs the good these days unfortunately.
. They have mids that fight tooth and nail. As others have said missed tackles seemed a massive thing again.
Hopefully we can get a few in.. each area of the ground

Not tough enough.

We need to draft and / or trade for players that have a bit of nasty about them.

And Dean Cox gets a pass this year, but with no finals and a long off-season, he must get more out of this list.

Kicking to a 2v1 is bad, 3v1 is worse, 4v1 is pathetic. It's happened in multiple games from a variety of players. Our coaching group is either abysmal & our players aren't following instructions.

Seeing mills as a spare halfway through the game when we're behind was stupid & highlights the mindset of this team. It starts from the coaches. Cox needs to pick a style, get proper support around him & tailor the list accordingly.

Papley is hard to watch for me , taking dives and looking for frees every contest.

He has gone backwards and just looks shit the way he is playing forward them
Down season, but Hanily and Dattoli are nowhere near it.

Paps was ok today and we simply don't have anyone else at ground level.

One team had plenty to play for today and it wasn’t us. Looked gassed by the 4th quarter, been a big effort to win as many as we have the last few months and it’s starting to show.

Their defensive unit completely outmuscled and outclassed our forward line. Was a real reality to check for where we are particularly without Amartey and Logan.

Thought Blakey was one of the better players today, that's 3 good ones now. After a huge yo-yo stretch where he's been almost a liability at times throughout it. Hopefully this is start of the wheel turning back into the 22-first half of 24 version.

Our defence got in each others way a lot and actually spoiled their teammate who would've marked atleast 3 times. I still maintain the most important thing for us this offseason is getting one of either an intercept defender or another KD to free up someone else to play that intercept role.
It's a position/role that's clearly missing. Need that leader player that can come in and really control/settle that backline.

You forgot the worst one kicking it to Jo one in the forward line!

That was comedy
