5-day break vs 7-day break is also a non-starter these days, ruling out Dogs-Freo from Friday night.

Probably after Round 21.
Didnt Adelaide just come off a 5 day break vs Bulldogs on a 8 day break?

My guess
Thursday Night - Essendon vs Carlton
Friday Night - Brisbane vs Hawthorn
Friday Night - Port Adelaide vs Gold Coast
Saturday Afternoon - North Melbourne vs Adelaide
Saturday Twilight - West Coast vs Sydney
Saturday Night - Collingwood vs Melbourne
Sunday Early - Richmond vs Geelong
Sunday Afternoon - Western Bulldogs vs Fremantle
Sunday Twilight - Greater Western Sydney vs St Kilda
Wednesday Night - Gold Coast vs Essendon

It's a hard one to go.
Once you decide what's the channel 7 Friday Night game, everything else falls into place.

But do you go Coll vs Melb, Bris vs Haw or WB vs Fre.

Imagine if GC go into the final game with their ladder position locked in whether they win or lose. I assume there isn't enough players on their list to rest the entire team. They could rest as many as possible including having 4 regulars just sit on the bench all game while the B graders play out 100 % of the game time

My guess

And why wouldn’t you kick it of with Carlton/Essendon

Agree on that. For me, the opposition and how weak they are isn't the issue. The issue is WHEN they scheduled the game, on the Wednesday after H&A is over and the other top 8 teams are preparing for finals. Huge disadvantage for GC. Game should have been played well before then.
Yep. I'm tipping they punted that GC wouldn't be a finals contender, so wouldn't be an issue.

Essendon and Gold Coast will strike a deal, Essendon forfeits the match, Gold Coast agree to give Essendon their top draft pick for points.

The clubs might be willing to make a deal like that, but I doubt the AFL will.

TV rights deal would be broken and all. (although they'll say it's for the fans).

GC might also want/need a % boost.

North's fight for pick 2 is a truly compelling story.

Some near-certainties

  1. ESS-CAR and PA-GC have to be Thu and/or Fri
  2. GC-ESS Wednesday (assumed)
  3. BL-HAW and WB-FRE both Sunday given all in finals race
  4. WCE-SYD is a dead rubber, so probably tucked away Sat early or twilight
Based on this, I would guess (assuming they're willing to go two Thu games):

Thu 7:20 ESS-CAR
Thu 7:50 PA-GC
Fri 7:40 COL-MEL
Sat 2:10 RIC-GEE
Sat 4:15 WCE-SYD
Sat 7:35 GWS-STK
Sun 1:20 NM-ADL
Sun 3:15 BL-HAW
Sun 4:40 WB-FRE
Wed 7:30 GC-ESS

Why would you schedule AFL and AFLW games at the same time for the same club if it can be avoided?
They won't. And as noted on page 1, a club won't host both on the same day. Meaning NM-Adel AFL & Rich-Geel AFL will be on Saturday (not gonna move the AFLW games by 24 hours because that will just create more problems).

Also, a 4.40pm WB-Frem AFL game on Sunday clashes with the Rich-WB AFLW 3.05pm game, though the latter could be brought forward 2 hours without much trouble. Nevertheless, in that scenario the Dogs would end the men's H&A season with 2 home Sunday twilight games vs WA clubs...

I reckon with tonight's result you can pretty much lock in the Bulldogs Freo game as the Sunday twilight, AFL will love to build drama with it potentially having finals ramifications for quite a few teams
