Even when he wasn't kicking a lot of goals, that was JD's job for years and yet people couldn't wait to get rid of him.
But good on him for moving to place where he's more of a need.
At this stage, Archer, Jobe or Jack Williams won't get that attention until they start becoming a threat, so it will be tough for the other when one of JW & Oscar aren't playing.
Must admit I've never understood the logic of this line of thought. So the opposition play 2 key defenders and if we were to play Archer Ried, Jobe Shannahan, Jack, Bailey, Maric whoever the other sides line position coach is going to say "how good fellas, we're not playing on 2 All Australians this week just load up on Oscar Allan and let the other guy park himself in the goal square unmanned for the day. Maybe once he's kicked 50 goals in a season doing that against no opponent we'll show him some respect but until then happy days." I Don't get it. Jack Darling was a good player and he still has something to offer at AFL level. But he wasn't a good player because just by being out there he "draws an opposition defender freeing up the full forward.'' Literally any key forward is going to draw a key defender, whether they have played 0 games of 300 games, are Tony Lockett or Jarrod Brander. Ditto every small forward for that matter.
What JD could offer, and what I'd argue O Allen probably doesn't do as well which is a problem for Waterman more than it would be the other way around, is run all day and lead to places that create space for the other forward to present. When the system isn't working and the ball just gets bombed onto Oscar's head because he hasn't put a lead on or he's found himself in congestion, then yes every defender and his dog is going to try and kill the ball. That doesn't mean that he's got 2 people playing on him, it means there has been a breakdown in forward structure.
