Unless Luko in particular pulls his finger out and Richards becomes anything more than a faceless squadbod who could feasibly be replaced by any second round pick in a given year, that deal should see everyone responsible sent to The Hague.
At this stage I'm much more confident in us getting some decent output out of Richards than I am Berry.

We should stop calling it the Houston deal by the way. It was the Houston and pick 6 deal. That's what we actually gave up.

The loveydovey ‘more to life than footy/good humans first and foremost’ factor of giving a thoroughly contracted Houston the green light with no resistance — even as circumstances completely changed with Melbourne’s attempted murder of Petracca — while going full steam ahead for Luko in large part due to his friendship with the captain.

Twelve months after Geelong spent back-to-back trade periods ensuring they’d extract two pounds of flesh for a wholly superfluous footballer in Ratugolea.

We’ve become the sort of club that sends JB Hi-Fi gift cards to the ‘ATO’, and the rest of the league knows it.

I'm being repetitive about this but I reckon the umpiring has a role to play in this too. In the second quarter, they started calling our short chip-kicks as too short. That meant the recipient was immediately under pressure. It also meant we started having to go longer to make sure the umpires called the mark. The first of these resulted in more rushed kicks and the latter ended up in more kicks to contests. We were also rushed from marks and free kicks by truly bizarre 'play on' calls (one where Mead was literally standing still and there was no hurry up warning).

None of this is to absolve the players and coaches for an abysmal performance after quarter time. We should be able to adapt in those circumstances. However, with a team made up of a lot of inexperienced and/or second-string players, it is more understandable.
Some of those not far enough calls and playons where horrendous..

It's like they like making us panic ..

Elanie yelling playing as we kicked a goal was annoying as **** as well

Exactly. If a free is there or isn't and called correctly is whats important.
There is some statistical evidence however that goes behind analysis as to whether or not things were overpaid/underpaid.

Looking at things like contested possession, possession numbers, tackles, and comparing it to FK figures.

Starting well and then disappearing for the rest of the game happened in the North Melbourne and Glenelg games as well. It’s completely unacceptable to just switch off for 3 straight quarters.

The team in the first quarter showed fight and were clean. I understand fluctuations in form during a game, but how does this not return at all in the 2nd half at any point?
Tells you a lot about the players and their lack of character. The first quarter was bruise free that is exactly why we excelled. Essendon last week bruise free.

Has anyone put themselves through the torture of watching the replay? Interested to know if Eleni's umpiring was as god awful as it seemed at the ground, in particular the play on call to JHF's last quarter mark...

I only watch the replay and Eleni was terrible and the mark should've been paid.

There was a throw towards the end of the second quarter she completely missed in our forward line that instead of us shooting for goal became a goal to them due to a 50m penalty in the same play.
That, the non mark to JHF and the mark to Harley Reid are 3 different direct impacts she had.

Needed to kick that sweet
For a big guy he drops too many easy marks. He also misses too many easy goals. Overall thought he let us down badly yesterday at key moments. Imo he's an average ruckman & below average around the ground. Rucks are still a real problem.

Should have played Wines instead of Brodie.

We drafted the worst of the 3 Duursma brothers, West Coast have the best one.

One incident was the difference on the scoreboard and summed up the difference on the day.

Waterman's contested marked on a flat out lead under severe pressure from Jones, 50m out just before the half time siren then goes back and slots it with the wind after the siren, was the difference on the scoreboard. Dont slot that and only kick a point and we win by 3 pts and they don't go into half time on a high and we don't go in on a downer.

Another example of Port giving away a goal or an opportunity for oppo to score a goal in the dying 30 to 60 seconds of a quarter - AGAIN.

But that incident summed up the difference. Waterman took a tough contested mark, whereas both Georgi and Luko dropped 2 semi contested marks each with beautiful passes to them inside 50 and all 4 ocassions when we had the momenteum of the game.

Waterman did it under the highest of heat, our boys wiltered under a lower heat.
I noticed this myself REH. We were walking off. WCE were jogging off.

...

Well it isn't like we could have drafted the others since they were like 12 at the time.

No kidding. The point is the youngest Duursma is a brilliant player.
