VFL Game Day Round 3: 49 point loss to Carlton

Remove this Banner Ad

The traditional rivals of the AFL will meet in the VFL for the first time in over 20 years, and it will be on. Both sides enter the clash at 1-1, although Carlton will be warm favourites after winning their last start by 12 goals against the team Essendon lost to by 11 goals in round 1. On the injury front, Essendon will be welcoming back key defenders James Stewart and possibly Zach Reid as well as inside midfielder Dylan Clarke, whilst ruckman Tom de Koning will come back for the Blues.

Essendon jumped to an early lead against Collingwood and never surrendered it, kicking away to a 35 point win. Tom Cutler was clearly best on ground, having 27 disposals and a 10 minute burst in the third quarter where he kicked 3 goals really buried the Pies. Danny Younan was also lively up front with 3 goals as captain, whilst Josh Tynan was in control in defence with his footy brain and solid skills.

A remarkable 12 goal opening quarter won Carlton the game, former Collingwood and Adelaide player Ben Crocker kicking 4 of his 7 goals in the opening stanza in what was a completely dominant game from him, having an able partner in former Geelong midfielder James Parsons having 21 disposals and 5 goals. Will Setterfield was excellent through the middle as well, collecting 25 disposals and 10 tackles.

Not overly confident, Carlton will be there abouts for top 4 this season, whereas we'll be very up and down. Blues by 22.

nice wrap up. how good is going to be to be back Carlton v Bombers at Windy Hill.
Only thing better would have been a curtain raiser at the G.
Not sure what happened to you guys v Brizzy last week but look pretty strong on paper .

The reason I asked was mostly because I looked at McBride, BZT and Brand and thought, wowsers.

Yeah I understand. If Gleeson were playing it'd be taller though.

They actually have 17 to our 12 AFL experience players. Expect De Koning to take control of this one and there mids to get on top. Setterfield was good last week. Expect Crocker to not get nearly as much 1:1 as he was afforded last week either.

They have named all four emergencies so one will obviously miss. I expect it to be Petrevski-Seton.
