Jade Gresham was the pick of the midfielders for St. Kilda, picking up 29 disposals and 10 inside 50's, whilst Dougal Howard mostly controlled the back line with 29 disposals and 9 interceptions, as Jack Steele was the leading goal scorer with 3 goals.

St. Kilda defence vs Essendon forward line

Essendon's forward line has struggled a bit this year, kicking a goal only 21.3% of the time it's entered their forward 50 so far. St. Kilda's defence has held up reasonably well, conceding a goal only 18.9% of the time it enters their back 50. There are really only 2 interesting match-ups at this end of the field, Cale Hooker against Dougal Howard, the latter starting extremely well so far this season whilst Hooker has been in good touch so far as well, at least in terms of his marking. The second one is the battle between Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and probably Ben Long, the Bomber averaging 2 goals/game against the Saints since moving forward but only kicking 1 goal in his last two against the Saints.

Midfield/rucks battle

In terms of the inside midfield battle, St. Kilda average 4 more clearances than their opponents so far this year, whilst the Bombers average 7.5 less than their opponents. In terms of contested possessions, both have struggled in the opening couple of games this season with the Saints having 44 less than their opponent, Essendon having 28 fewer. St. Kilda will be boosted by the addition of boom recruit Brad Crouch on the inside to play alongside the likes of Jade Gresham, Jack Steele and Seb Ross; whilst Essendon's midfield has been pretty much decimated by injury, the line will be lead by Andrew McGrath and Darcy Parish, with support likely coming from Jake Stringer, debutant Archie Perkins and Kyle Langford. On the outside, Brad Hill and Jack Billings look good for the Saints so far this season, whilst Essendon will be hoping Nik Cox and Zach Merrett start well out wide. In the ruck, Shaun McKernan will play against the Bombers for the first time ever, likely to be against senior football debutant (having never played VFL) Nick Bryan after Sam Draper's injury.

Essendon defence vs St Kilda forward line

St. Kilda's forward line hasn't been at full strength so far this year, kicking a goal only 21.6% of the time it enters their forward 50. However, Essendon's defence has been very leaky at the start of this year, conceding a goal 27.8% of the time it enters their defensive 50. Max King is the big match-up for the Bombers, with Brandon Zerk-Thatcher the only one who can possibly play on him, whilst Tim Membrey has always cut Essendon to shreds will probably get a match-up against Aaron Francis whilst Mason Redman will try to combat one of the premier small forwards in the AFL in Daniel Butler, who has only kicked 3 goals in 2 games against Essendon so far, so he'll be looking to improve that record.

X-Factor Player

Nick Hind got drafted to St. Kilda after playing for Essendon in the VFL, but left at the end of last season to come back home. His speed has been important for Essendon so far and he will be keen to impress against his former club

Key stat

Essendon: Centre clearance difference. The Bombers will need all the chances they can get and the best way to do that is to get the ball out of the middle.

St Kilda: Forward conversion. Realistically, these guys are heavy favourites for a reason. Converting their chances could make it a big win

Tip

An Easter miracle? Unlikely. St. Kilda by 47

We need a big body and some leadership... What's David Myers doing?

Is he ready?
