Roast Round 3 post game rant thread

My take on the game tonight:

The Good:
-Lucas played fairly well on debut
-Simpson really honestly tried to lift us
-Yarran showed some good signs
-Robinson is ridiculously hard at the footy

The Bad:
-Murphy had a reduced impact due to a very heavy tag (Welsh?). He got quite a few frees actually due to how close he was being played.
-Reimers tore us to pieces with his forward entries. I was watching from behind the Pomsford goals and he was very damaging when he got it, should of had a much closer man.
-The Jamison/Williams match-up was wrong. Jamo did his best but Williams was quicker on the lead and took them in front, smaller player like Armfield should of gone to him and Jamo take a tall (Gumbleton/Ryder)
-Disposal by foot and hand was poor, every player seemed to get a bad vibe.
-Waite had his worst game in a long while (nearly zero effectiveness till the fourth from what I could tell)
-Several players went missing for large parts of the game (Houlihan, Walker)
-Henderson needs to either take more contested marks or we NEED TO CREATE SOME SPACE. Our forward-line was appalling at creating space for leads tonight.
-Players need to stop clustering up one side of the ground, if one player stays on the far wing, one-out then he can break his opponent and be loose for a quick turnover if required. The way we play now once we win the ball back we haven't got anyone to give it to.
-Betts is NOT a good marking option. For his size he does incredibly well but he gets out-muscled and punched over by every opponent unless he is on the lead (even then he loses more than he wins). Should be used sparsely in this role. Did well in the middle though
-Russell briefly played loose in defence. This seemed to work but then it was changed. WHY? it made sense for him to cut off leads and provide a quick run out option.
-Some players just didn't look thrilled to be out there. Can't really remember specifics but the team energy just felt flat

The Ugly (Conclusion)
-A variety of tactical, motivational and skill errors really did lose us this very winnable game.
-I do NOT want Ratten sacked, but his gameday tactics/match-ups really need work. He has a fine original set-up but if an opposition player has an unexpected good game (Reimers) or one of ours is being shut down (Murphy) he doesn't adjust quickly enough.
-The youth looked promising in this game, but some of our more experienced players worry me. Houlihan, Walker and to a lesser degree Thornton need to lift

Look I agree its up to the players to fire the F*** UP!

How-ever in all seriousness when was the last time Ratten actually "out coached" another coach?????

His decision making needs to be looked at surely he can't be at carlton for too much longer. He needs to step up like the players do.

All in all we're FUC***

Ratten puts a bomb under 'embarrassing' Blues
Slamming the team's work-rate - ''We'll go and have a look at the GPS numbers [for distance covered] and if they come up and say we worked harder I'll put them in the bin I think'' - Ratten urged his team to learn from recent examples of Geelong and St Kilda winning matches in adverse circumstances.

''You look at St Kilda last night. I think there's lessons for us in the last few weeks … that our players could look at other teams and admire what they do when the chips are down and you're not getting dealt the cards you want. You actually have to do something about it.''
Ratten puts a bomb under 'embarrassing' Blues

Is it possible to track Ratten's moves and coaching with the GPS? :o

Hey, I am hearing you. It was a heartless performance all around, and once again, I reckon the supporters are suffering more than the players who will still get paid.

I think that some of the old boys need to get down to the club and get some of these lads who arent passionate enough about playing for the jumper and give them a real hard lesson in what it means to be a blue.

Show them the videos of guys who wore the old dark navy with a passion that kills while they are sitting next to them.

Let them meet the guys for whom each match was a war and we went to battle with the enemy every week.

The guys who would kill for the honour of wearing our glorious jumper... not pulling it on each week as a part of their contractual obligations.

Why are you guys bagging your own coach ?? I thought Ratten did a wonderful job tonight !!

Exit to the left... dont let the door hit you on the arse on the way out

We've had enough years of watching our team play terrible football. In 2008 we turned around and in 2009 we showed some real promise. So far this year, we look like a rabble. It's becoming evident that we don't have the list to be a top 8 team. I'm now starting to worry that we may become the next Richmond, battling to make the 8 for the next decade.

We confirmed tonight that we do not have the skills to compete with even a mediocre opposition. Compared to our skills, Essendon's looked silky smooth. Their handpasses under pressure hit their marks more often than not. They seemed to have more space to use, and made better decisions. Carlton lacked structure and communication. There were so many examples of 2-3 Carlton players leaving their opposition to all contest the same mark. Then the ball would come to ground and inevitably, an unmarked Essendon player would run off with it unchallenged.

I think there are several issues:

1. Ratten can't coach. He doesn't have the smarts or the initiative to compete. His body language in the box says it all. He doesn't have a clue what's going on, doesn't have any idea how to fix it, and just sits there looking defeated. Teams that improve, improve largely because of coaching strategies. Alistair Clarkson coached Hawthorn to a premiership in 2008, using the "cluster" which opposition teams did not know how to counter. Bomber Thompson's running, handballing style of play has seen Geelong make 3 GFs in the last 3 years. What strategy does Ratten have? Apparently he wants to take Carlton back to a slower, tempo style of football, which reminds me of the much maligned Sydney style game of years passed. Last night, there was not even any sign of that "tempo", keeping possession type of game. Carlton rarely kept possession, kicking to packs with most of our disposals.

2. Too many list-cloggers with no skills. This is FOOTball!!! If you can't kick a football, then **** off and play netball! Carlton's suspect skills were on display for all to see last night. I don't care if you're under pressure, it's your job to hit a target, whether by hand or by foot. If your skills aren't up to scratch, then don't bother showing up to play.

3. Setanta is not the answer to our forward line woes. Has no football brain. Can not kick to save himself. Being a natural athlete isn't enough, if you don't have the skills to play AFL football then **** off back to Ireland. Give me Cameron Cloke over this spud any day of the week. At least Cloke can take a mark and kick straight. His goals so far this year have been more the style of a small crumbing forward. He doesn't provide any structure or presence in our forward line. He's a "trier", but wouldn't get a game on any other team list.

If this is the kind of performance that we're going to trundle out for the rest of the year, then we can kiss our top 8 chances goodbye, and will most likely wind up in the bottom 4.

Too many flipping midfielders, thats our problem.
9/10 we can win a centre clearance, but after that, the ball could go anywhere.

How many contested marks did we have? 5???? Was nothing short of startling. Even clear leads out in front and all it took was someone to sneeze to put them off and spill it.

Warnock is quite possibly the worst ruckmen in the league. Get rid of him. I dont think I saw him touch the ball outside of a ruck contest and when he did he blindly handballed it to someone 8cm away from him.

Kreuzer was relatively quiet this game but at least he had second efforts.

Is O'Useless really list-worthy? He is not comfortable doing anything. He is tall and has a good frame but thats about it. If thats the best the AFL has to draft I'd be quite worried.

Theres no structure or cohesion between back-midfield-forward at all. Our midfielders, all 500 of the ****s, are some of the best in the league, but who do we kick to? If Eddie is a permanent fixture in the forward line he needs to be able to kick more than 30m out. Unfortunately not many of our players can do that. There is a constant shuffling in the forward line, one which I thought would have been worked out during the break.

Waite is a bloody gun, but I would really be suprised if he gets a game next week. His injury has put him back a long long way. Play him in the 2's for half a season.

Only honourable mention I have is for Robinson. His disposal is pretty bad most of the time but tonight it was passable and his efforts at the ball were always there.

I didnt even know Gibbs was playing until the 3rd quarter. His consistency can be worrying at times.

Let's hope the return of Judd gets some leadership out there and we can actually get an inside 50 to a decent target.

Very poor to say the least -

Last nights performance cemented some thoughts on reflection with a clear head this morning.

Thornton, Walker and Houlihan won't be in our next premiership side.

The first two need to be shopped around for GC & WS to help improve our list and other delisted at seasons end.

Ratts - You have to have a plan B - That deer in the headlight look is becoming the norm and not the exception - You need to turn it around quickly, the heat you are about to receive is not unfair after your performance last night.

Fact of the matter is that you cannot expect to win a game of footy if you can only kick a goal for every 3 shots. There is no excuse for the lack of accuracy. Clearly we need to practice kicking for goal, I don't care if the fitness staff say they don't wont more kicking. Kicking for goal is the single most important aspect of this game. Everything else is just getting the opportunity to do so. So far that's 2 games our inaccuracy in front of goal has cost us and counting.

We were plain out awful last night. Really lacked any sort of presence out on the ground, little or no gameplan by the looks of things, and our delivery into the forward line was hopeless.

One other issue that I could see was going to give us headaches right from the outset was our matchups, and how wrong we got them last night. Of the 4 forwards that proved to be telling last night for Essendon, I thought we got them all wrong.

I also noticed that Betts went into the middle, and I thought he did ok in there. Why not play him more in the middle, and that we Garlett can come into the side, and give us more speed. (Garlett was excellent yesterday for the Ants)

I have a question for the Carlton players ... are you a believer because I think you are ... a black and red believer .

We were pathetic last night and quite embarrassing.

On paper we should've smashed the Bombers but once again, we failed to show up and play football.

Played like a bunch of indivduals and looking back, the 20 point margin is quite flattering.

Show some heart boys because you are better than the crap you dished up last night :thumbsd:

Full credit to Essendon for being the better team. We have more class and talent and dominated for large periods of the game.

You certainly have a game style that we find it very very hard to combat. Really, you should have won by more, but for your inacuracy in the second quarter.

You got one out of three right there. Essendon dominated for large periods of the game because the players worked a lot harder & for each other. If Essendon had more class & talent the final result would have been in the realms of 100 points, because that is the worst game we have played since Denis Pagan's last game as coach, when Brisbane towelled us up to the tune of 100+ points.

Pretty insipid performance. I thought the only period where we were actually on top was the first 2-3 minutes where we scored 3 behinds. Our midfield was nowhere to be seen, guys like Gibbs and Murphy really needed to impose themselves. I thought Simpson played decent for the first 1-2 quarters but then he too disappeared. Our forward structure too was... non-existant.

I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I seem to recall Ratten saying before the game that we wanted to slow down the pace of the game (as previous games had been typically high-scoring). If that was the reason for us not generating any run at all then I wonder what he was thinking.

Our inaccuracy prevented it from being a percentage booster. You all continue to underestimate us.

I wouldn;t get too excited, it was a very average match with skill errors galore on both sides, both whom are very unlikely to play finals..

Yes you have bragging rights at present, but cast your mind back to your previous three games...

You really are our bogey side, and just seem to find something when you play us...belief I think it is...

I'm not going to spend any time on individuals here, because by far and large it wasn't the players fault.

We lost to Essendon in largely the same manner we have in recent times.
We let them control the corridor, and I for one am at odds as to understand exactly why.
Sitting behind the goals at the city end it was evident we froze whenever we got anywhere near the corridor opting to go far and wide and letting the boundary line become our enemy.

For anyone that plays chess you'll know: Control the centre and you'll win the game.
This may sound somewhat cruel but I suggest Ratten learns to play chess soon as he clearly can't play poker, for folding on a bluff.

Individuals spraying the ball out on the full
Individuals not confident enough to take a set shot or go for a mark
Individuals not digging deep and being accountable
I know what you are saying but fingers do need to be pointed - in every direction it seems
