People talking about Mitchito kicking for goal. I’m convinced none of them practice goal kicking ever as it just never improves. How professionals continue to miss so many easy goals is mind boggling. There is clearly never enough attention given to it.
It is very difficult to get players to break habits they've had since they were kids - look at Reilly O'Brien tonight, he looks like he's never held a football before when he kicks. It's the same thing with Mitch - he was probably just bigger and better than all the other kids so he was never forced to fix his kicking action.

I've seen coaches say that's one of the best things about the Irish recruits - they didn't learn how to kick as kids so they can be taught how to do it properly without developing any weird habits that make their action worse.

That’s a fair point but it can be improved. Look at Stewie Loewe he was shocking early days and became very reliable in the second half of his career but these guys never improve like that. I know it’s not that simple but if you have ever been out on an afl field the goals are huge and it seems harder to miss but I’m probably just over simplifying it.

Mitchito looks - to borrow a term from the late 1970’s - just really ‘UNCO’, when he kicks. I think he went to Stewart Loewe boot camp at when he was 12. (…’boot camp’.. I will close the door on my way out)

It's interesting isn't it.

I put it down to pressure and fatigue.

Same reasons plenty of basketball players can hit 50 free throws in a row at training without needing many attempts, yet in games almost nobody averages over 90%, and 85% is elite.

I'm not sure of Mitch's early years, but given that his dad is Japanese his dad probably didn't play footy. So Mitch probably didn't get much in the way of coaching when he was very young and had to wait until he was 6 or 7 before rocking up to Aus Kick. By then he probably had his kicking action locked in. He then probably had random dads of other kids coaching him in a group of 20 or 30 so maybe he didn't get any proper kicking training until he was in his teens.

I could compare him to Baily Dale at the Bulldogs. His dad and uncle played over 600 games combined for Edithvale-Aspendale and both were beautiful kicks of the footy. Bailey was being taught the perfect kicking style in the back yard by the age of two.

The result is Bailey kicking 50m bullets onto his team mates' chests while Mitch can't master the art of dropping the ball in a straight line from his hand to his foot.

Maybe, like Stewie Loewe, he can gradually improve his set shots at goal, but I think for now he should play a bit further up the ground so he isn't the one we are relying on to kick the pressure shots at goal. Apart from his kicking for goal, he is a very good player, and taking this weakness away from his game will surely make him even better.

His Mum is Japanese.

I think Mitch went to the “Stewart Loewe School for Kids who don’t read too good…” no goal kicking there
