Hopefully we will be bringing in Adam Campbell this week, to play alongside Pavlich and Tarrant up forward. So, what would your defence look like?

Rutten and Stevens will obviously take two of them, but who would the third tall defender be? Otten could go with Tarrant around the ground, but I don't imagine he would be strong enough in contests or in the air. Would either Sellar or Moran be chances to come in this week then?

Otten is actually very strong in the air and at 192cm is tall enough to tackle Tarrant, the only worry would be strength, but I'd like to see him given a shot, would be a great experience for the young kid.

So at the moment:

Outs: Bock, Hentschel and Knights

In: Stevens (Please, oh please, oh please) - For Bock and to play at CHB
Symes for Knights - gives us a little more hardness around the ball, adds probably a touch more flexibility than Shirley too, although it wouldn't surprise me to see Shirley brought in.
Gill/Griffin - For Hentschel, its going to be one of these 2, at this stage I'm 50/50 on this, almost leaning towards Griff, just because I think Maric will have his work cut out against Sandilands and both Griff and Maric can rest up forward as well, when Tippet/Walker need a break, I don't think Craigy wants to play more than two talls up forward at once.

If, God forbid, Stevens doesn't come up, then I'd look at bringing in Sellar/Moran with Gill and rather than bringing in Griff as a 2nd ruck, we could rotate Tippet or Sellar/Moran in there.

Whilst it's disappointing to have so many outs, for their various reasons, what it does present is our younger players a great opportunity to really show what they are capable of when given an extended run and a chance to really cement their spots in the side.

Otten has looked a lot better in defence than I thought he would. But I think the problem is that if you go in with Otten as the third tall defender, whoever he is playing on will probably go to the goalsquare and play one out. So strength will be the big issue.

If Campbell is picked, I think you'll have to pick either Moran or Sellar. Even if he isn't picked though, chances are Bradley and Sandilands will rotate through the forward line more often to stretch your defence. In which case Rutten, Stevens and Otten in particular could struggle with the height and strength.

Obviouly Bock, Knights and Hentchel out

I would bring in Stevens (if fit), Griffin and Symes

Stevens to CHB, Griffin to support Maric in the ruck and Tippett to CHF with Walker to FF

is the Tarrant / Defence experiment over

I hope Tarrant plays up forward as I do not believe this suits Pav

I agree with your thinking.

The concern is we need Griffin to help cobat Sandilands, but Walker/Tippett/Griffin/Maric up forward would be inexperienced. So I'm leaning towards Griffin, with using Goodwin at CHF, as we don't play normal CHF any way ... leaving Walker & Tippett closer to goal.

B: Johncock, Rutten, Otten
HB: McLeod, Stevens, Doughty
C: Reilly, Vince, Mackay
HF: Porplyzia, Goodwin, Edwards
F: Douglas, Tippett, Walker
R: Maric, van Berlo, Thompson
I: Griffin, Symes, Patrenko, Dangerfield

In: Stevens, Griffin, Symes
Out: Bock, Hentschel, Knights

Remember this is Freo, so we are still a good chance if we show some character after events of last few days. Time for Thommo, Radar & VB to stand up!

mate if your side keeps burning the footy like they have in the opening rounds and keep playing with a lack of desire it wont matter who you play up forward, it could be JC himself, and you wont kick a winning score

you guys were terrible last week against a very average side

is the Tarrant / Defence experiment over

Tarrant will be switching between attack and defence, depending on what suits the team the most. So I would imagine that without Bock, he'll be up forward this week.

We actually had more inside 50's than Essendon on the weekend and more marks inside 50, so if we can just get our kicking skills a bit better and hit the targets, then we will have a good shot at kicking a winning score. So if you go into the match just banking on us missing our targets, then it could be trouble. Even with poor kicking, you're still going to need to have the right match ups.

IMO the last spot will be between Gill and Griff and it all depends were Craigy wants to put all his eggs

At first I was leaning to Griff however given the need to play Stevo back NC may look at Gill to return especially at Subi.

Either way their is enough talent on each line to win this game of footy

Obviously Bock, Knights and Hentschel out.

Stevens return is crucial this week as he's needed both up forward and down back.

IMO we went into the game against the Saints light on for one tall. Freo don't appear to have as many 199 cms plus players as St Kilda did so if Stevens can come in for Bock, Gill will be required to take on Hentschel's role, to try and establish some forward structure.

If Stevens is unavailable then it's Sellar or Moran to take his place.

Ins: Stevens, Gill, and Shirley.

I not going into the match banking on you guys missing your targets

what I do believe though is that the crows are more discipline and capable of applying more pressure then the Bombers did last week, so for Freo to be in the contest you need to vastly improve your skill level, if you don't it will be easy for us to defend and easy to counter attack

hitting targets is everything in the modern game

I would like to see:

In: Griffin, Stevens, Symes

Out: Knights, Hentschel, Bock

I feel that Griffin will be useful against Sandilands, he's done well against him before. If not Griffin, then I'd be happy to see Sellar come in.

I'd think Gill and Shirley aren't a progressive change.

Stevo, Griffin and Symes for me.

Stevo and Symes a given for me

I am undecided in regards to Gill or Griff

In regards to Shirley, there is a thought going around that teams are not applying as many hard tags

I am not sure that we need to apply a hard tag against freo, I would rather our midfield go head to head with theirs and attack the game

no Shirley for me, however maybe the following week against the Cats

so yeh apology accepted , i may not post on this board often but wen i do its worthy stuff..

Sorry to toddflanders, biteme and anyone else offended by my doubting Thomas act. Surprising that it's taken the AFC 3 days to announce a major injury like this.

I doubt Craig will be that bold this week, likely replacements are Griffin/Gill, Stevens and Symes/Shirley, most likely Symes and Gill out of the 2 variables. 2 talls and a small for the same.

But a couple of bold movecould be in order if Stevens isn't fit.

1) I think that possibly Sellar is the pick if Stevens doesn't pull up, given that he was competitve in the back half in the preseason. Moran would probably be the pick by Craig, but Moran is still better as a forward in my opinion. They could go for both but for mind Gill and Sellar would be bold enough.

2) Cook instead of Symes. My preference would be for Symes as we have been poor in the clearances, but given it is early in the season, Cook would be a good option to give him some more exposure as he seems to have plenty of up side.

Outs: Henschtel, Knights, Bock

In: Stevens, Gill, Shirley (Safe Bet)
: Sellar, Gill, Symes (Bold)
:Sellar, Moran, Cook (Out of this world)

This is not a selection change but would be interesting to see Danger in the forward line a bit as well, god he was good in the TAC so he knows what he's doing

I pretty much agree with what you're saying here. The good thing about picking Sellar or Moran is that they can play forward, ruck or back (although not particularly accomplished at any of them yet). Freo could try to expose us for height by playing Bradley as a forward. Massie and Bassett would sure be handy this week.

Sellar instead of Griffin.

Otherwise spot on.

I think I'd want Griffin as my third tall rather than Sellar if we were going that way because he is an experienced ruckman and will make a difference to Maric who has rucked his guts out the last two weeks. Just not sure if we should run 3 talls on the open expanses of subi.

Easy fixed structurally...pick Moran.

- Unlike Sellar, can play in the ruck against a monster whereas Sellar probably could pinch hit but not against Sandilands (Sandi will beat all of our rucks most of the time anyway, so it becomes a battle ensuring he doesn't also dominate around the ground. With the right selection we may even beat him in this area).

- Unlike Griffin, can play back (ok not very well but if Stevens is also there with Rutten then the 3rd tall role should be fine if required)

- Of the 3 options is the most proven in terms of promising anything as an AFL forward.

- Unlike Griffin, is more likely to win the ball around the ground and add to our running power on the vast expanses of Subiaco.

- His form is the equal of the other 2 options.

With this latest injury/suspension news, I've now gone for:

IN: Stevens, Symes, Moran, Gill.
OUT: Hentschel, Knights, Bock, Douglas.

OK so,
Out:Bock, Trent, Knights
In: Stevens, Gill, Griffin

F: Walker Tippett Douglas
HF:Porp Gill Vince
C: Reilly Thompson Mackay
HB:McLeod Stevens Goodwin
FB:Johncock Rutten Otten

1R: Maric VB Edwards
I/C: Griffin Petrenko Dangerfield Doughty

Tippett to play most of game forward with occassional run on ball (With Maric to go FF). Walker to also play majority of game as floating forward.
Gill to play lead up forward. Will need to occasionally play Porps one out or as I said last week, try Dangerfield one out from the goalsquare.

Rutten to take Pavlich anytime he is forward (even if at CHF).
If Stevens doesn't come up, we are pretty much screwed!

Obviously Bock, Knights and Hentschel out.

Spot on here. Two areas we have struggled is in the clearances and moving the ball through CHF.

Gill goes a long way to helping us move the ball through CHF, especially on a ground like Subi.

Shirley will provide some extra grunt round the stoppages, so hopefully along with Thommo will help us in this area.

Stevens is required to replace Bock, so hopefully he can come up.

stevens will do a magnificent job at CHB. he'll be a superb replacement in that role.
Gill in for hentschel - and quite frankly, those people in training who said trent was moving like before: lay off the hooch.
Shirley in for knights
Symes in for petrenko.

taht's what I'd do anyway. Sellar might be in the mix too.

Not happy with Petrenko ? Or just think Symes has done enough ?
