I'm not missing anything.

Are you telling me that players like Gilbee and Mcleod etc always play as a loose man in defence?

Cr@p.

Sometimes there is a loose man in defence but more often than not these are just creative back flankers that run off their opposition forwards.

If Thailand is really your place of residence is it a coincidence that the two biggest floggers on this board are both overseas and probably haven't watched a live game of footy since the VFL?

I am in Perth as I type this and have been a season ticket holder/member since 1987 - I have seen plenty of footy - you?

The point is, that Ray, who the discussion was about, has been playing the Goddard role - as, shock horror, a loose man in defence. So it was suggested we tag him with Stenglein. You suggested the best way to hurt Ray would be for his man to score goals and be a threat - I have simply pointed out - quite clearly - that loose men by definition don't have an opponent.

It seems on this board lately that when people float ill-considered notions - such as the opponent of a loose man - and that notion is shown as flawed they simply revert to abuse as some sort of way of avoiding an admission of error.

You agree that your solution to Ray was his opponent (AKA the invisible man) kicking goals? Do you also agree that invisible men have rarely had any impact on AFL games?

Cheers

Indeed.

The mods should send a message. I would like to see a crackdown on this kind of nonsense.

Calling people names is stupid. People who go there as soon as they run out of ideas should get a card.

I think you will find Eagle87 made this personal with the condescending "flat earth society" call which while not abusive by the letter of the law it is a personal attack on someones intellect that works on the same level.

While my original response was in relation to the Farren Ray topic my statement/response was wider in scope because it is not only loose men that are so damaging and are assigned defensive forwards (aka Mcleod, Gilbee, Wirra etc).

P.S I have also been a member since inception, not that either of us would be willing to prove otherwise.

In a thread about this weeks game and responding to a comment suggesting we tag Ray with Stinger you were commenting more generally about half back flankers?

Fair enough.

Since we are talking about random topics who do you reckon will pick up Jono Brown in the game v Sydney this week? ;)

By the way, I agree that half backs that run off their men all day are often best made accountable by their opponent being used a lot going the other way - a number of sides have adopted this approach to quell Wirrpanda's influence.

Of course for this weeks game, the issue is Ray and his role as a link man playing out of the back half without an opponent (i.e. loose). IMO we will likely look at a tag on him to stop the run he has been creating. Of course this will then simply make someone else the loose man and may create a different problem. I guess we will see.

Its your view that if Ray plays loose and has the sort of impact he has the last 2 weeks that we should do nothing - because you "don't get the defensive forward" role?

The flat earth comment was based on a view that perhaps you were living in the past and hadnt adapted your thinking in this regard to modern football concepts. To the extent that you found that hurtful, and inaccurate then I apologise.

Ray has been playing dominate footy from half back. Basically been playing the role Goddard was last year. Really needs to be shut down. He has gone from tagger to taggee.

Reckon Stenglein might get this defensive forward job.

Um no he hasnt.

He's been playing as tagger in the middle, just like he did at the doggies and just like he will do today, he will take our best runner and grind him down.

When you are led to the ball as much as he is it's easy to prop up your stats with cheap little handpasses. He gets by on his supreme fitness and concerntration. Hardly damaging by foot, and if the saints are using him in the quarterback role then we are half way to a win already.

So are the Saints using him in a free running role behind the ball or as a tagger?

I may be misreading your post but you seem to be having a bob each way.

He hasnt had a tagging role in the Saints games I have seen perhaps I am missing something?

... and once again, he has been named in the BP ...

Um, read the post? Im saying he's been playing as a tagger, whoever the other bloke was reckons he's playing as a quarterback. I dont see it that why, but thats his opinion.

If he is playing that position, which is isnt, we are half way to a win. ;)
