Hatchard needs too be at least banned from kicking in the back half of the ground.

N.Kelly looking back on this year is a big positive, maybe recruited Grace just to be her sister’s stable pony.
Hatchy seems to have lost her fitness. She used to go on fitness trips with Harps and his wife to the USA in the offseason but don’t think she has since she got hitched.

That kick from Newman 😮‍💨

Goal assist of the year, that one!

Pretty mediocre effort overall. We've really only played two good quarters of football all year so far, albeit for 2 wins.

Several players below their usual standards in Randall, Prowse, Allan, etc. Rasheed and Jones couldn't get involved. Hatchard did alright but simply cannot pick up a ground ball. Fumbles every single time. Ironically she is doing her best work in the ruck at the moment.

Marinoff and Gould strong, Ponter and Goodwin both involved early, Biddell good, Newman good. Tonon with one of her better matches despite only seven touches, Boileau too. N. Kelly pretty good. Very little involvement from around half the side - Kustermann, Rasheed, Mueller, Cronin were all basically unsighted along with Randall, Jones, Rasheed... Grace Kelly where involved but didn't actually provide much value.

On commentary they said that the "Crows are back" and that round 1 was a blip. I think the opposite is true - we're clearly a level below previous seasons. Will need to reinvent ourselves again if we want to get anywhere close to Brisbane next week.

On TOG% watch, every player managed to get 50%+ gametime which is a nice change. Boyle-Carr with 54%, Kustermann with 55%, SLT with 58%, Mueller with 61%, Boileau with 62%. Then everyone else with 70%+.

We just don't look as fast or agile as some of these teams, even the ones we're beating.

We're tough, have some smart defenders and clever forwards. Some grunt in the middle. But it feels like other teams are moving past us in terms of player-type

Good;
  • Hatchard so much better today, her best game in a while, better repeat efforts & played to her limitations much better especially looking to handball more.
  • Following on from the 4th qtr last week again when they got the ball out in space they were very good.
  • Newman is in very good form at the moment, kicking so good today especially in those conditions. Should be 1st in the B&F after the first 3 games.
  • After a rare down game last week Biddell bounced back with a standout performance & held the backline which was iffy at times together.
  • N.Kelly like Newman has regained her mojo on the wing this year, 8 score involvements show she’s become a dangerous option again.
  • Boileau again showed more signs of improvement, looked like one of the Crows most likely to get a stoppage clearance, just really needs to fix her disposal.
  • Goodwin does as well, positive with 20 disposals and 6 score involvements but disposal is off this year and needs to improve.
  • Gould close to BOG, really took advantage of her matchup and as usual was the one forward who was consistently involved and dangerous
  • Ponter was back to getting first hands off J.Allan in the centre & probably looked better in the middle than she did up forward this week
  • Marinoff really made her touches count, not the usual big Marinoff numbers but had to step in to arrest momentum in the middle in that 3rd quarter & turned the tide single handedly and only had 1 turnover for the game.

Not so good;

  • Thought they were again beaten at ground level over most parts of the ground.
  • Allowed GWS the corridor far too easily & with far too many loose numbers.
  • Midfield again looked to be 2nd to the ball & stand offish around stoppages.
  • The high defensive line versus the GWS running handball game didn’t work the best.
  • Usual poor kicking forward of centre & chance conversion issues.
  • Forward line other than Gould & Ponter at times again was the same old tale of crud, lead and ran to some stupid spots.
  • Was Randall’s worst game she’s played.
  • Jones had a shocker after the first 10 minutes.
  • Tonon, Mueller and G.Kelly all varying levels of ordinary in defence.
  • Cronin was thrown to the Wolves by Clarke by playing her on Evans in the 1st half - not up to it yet.
Horrible;
  • Umpiring an utter disgrace today, not a surprise with Eleni leading them out there, GWS throwing all day and GWS defenders allowed to murder the Crows forwards without consequence. Probably cost a number of scoring chances just awful holds missed.

This was one of Noffy's lowest disposal counts in a long time. And that free kick she gave away for a high tackle was not high. Deserved to be free kick for.

Umpiring is often pretty bad. EJ looked like she gently placed the player towards the ground and was called for dangerous tackle.

Yep. They are faster and fitter and their skills are better. It appears as if none of these things are a priority for us.

Is this sarcasm, or do you really mean that? If the latter, that's a really bad indictment on the club. Will a new coach change that? Anyone in the running at the moment?

Our strength seems to be in our key position stocks. Not a bad thing but other clubs seem to be focusing on spread from stoppages, moving the ball via run and handball.

Niamh Kelly returning to good form has been important but it feels like we lack a bit in this department.

Have we just not had access to elite talent/athletes due to our consistently high finishing positions?

I think a big aspect of this has been that our midfield has been set in stone for years, starving newcomers of opportunities. Basically since 2019 our permanent midfield structure has been a lead ruck, Marinoff, Hatchard and one extra player. So midfield opportunities have mostly been confined to whoever goes into that one extra spot. In 2019 that extra player was Forth or Li (when it wasn't Phillips), in 2020 it was Gum, in 2021/22 it was Martin, in 2023/24 it was Charlton or Randall, this year it's been Boileau. And that's when we don't boot them out to give Ponter her regular cameos in there. Nobody has managed to nail a spot for any length of time, and other than Randall, none of them have thrived after being moved out of there.

In that time we've brought in plenty of potential midfield options - Charlton and Boileau as mentioned, plus Kustermann, Goodwin, Newman, Munyard, Levy, Ballard, Gore, and probably more that I've forgotten about - but they've been shunted off into half back or defensive forward roles and generally struggled as a result.

Will Rasheed end up midfield or is she mostly a forward?

Hard to say. Ideally, she'll end up in the "Erin Phillips" role of doing both.

Hopefully it will be with us. Part of me can't help but feel we're missing out on our one opportunity to convince her to stay at Adelaide by having a dominant season filled with success that she wants to be a part of.

Instead she'd be looking over at Port saying "they're on the way up, and I could help bridge the gap".

Coaches votes, where it was a close race between Hatchard and Biddell for BOG.

9 Anne Hatchard ADEL
8 Chelsea Biddell ADEL
4 Madison Brazendale GWS
3 Cambridge McCormick GWS
3 Caitlin Gould ADEL
2 Niamh Kelly ADEL
1 Danielle Ponter ADEL

Beyond that, there are a few possible combos, but however you slice it, someone rated Brazendale as second best, while the other didn't give them any votes.
