AFLW Round 4 Discussion - 2020 AFLW season

Ahright ahright ahright. Some tantalising tests this weekend between evenly-matched teams cooperatively pursuing the perfect blend of skill, fitness and tactics. Especially for 6 of the original 8 clubs. It's not now-or-never for the winless expando teams to get on the board, but they'll sure be playing like it is. And the locations for these games? Will be heading to Leederville Oval to watch. Hoping Dana gets up for the game.

It'll be interesting to see what sort of crowd you get there. Hopefully they get a crowd, but I wouldn't be shocked if the West Coast faithful have already abandoned the AFLW.

Wish I could argue. Supporters love the success for sure. Hopefully we get a decent showing

It'll be good for the state to have a strong Eagles presence for the AFLW as well.

Not that the AFLW website seems to care. 6.30pm on a Thursday and nothing about team selection there yet.

My tip for today

Pies-Dees: Having earned a reputation for losing ones they shouldn't, Melbourne's history in matches following those losses is pretty good. Not perfect, though. The one time they've dropped a second game on the trot was a 34-point Alice Springs demolition at the hands of Collingwood in 2018. The 8 goals 20 behinds the Demons have opened the season with is easily their lowest-scoring 3-week stretch to date, and the wind-rain-wind excuse will look shaky if they can't slam through plenty of majors in Docklands' weatherproof stadium. The Magpies are obviously playing better footy currently, with a handball-heavy style that can stand up under pressure. But they don't have enough to show for it yet. 19 scoring shots in the last fortnight, despite dominating the play, is a bigger concern than inaccuracy in front of goal. MEL by 1

The Big EZ wants to wait until the crowd builds before she holds on to a few of those specky attempts, I guess.

Nice start, but Collingwood, you can't just play around with the ball 60m out waiting for the red sea to part. And switching the play is fine (great even!), but do it with some urgency!

Great to see Hanks involved a lot today, not just through her savvy ball use but all the delightful little tap ons and slick gathers. Wayyy overdue for a Rising Star nomination.

Well thankfully you got your tip!

I had no faith, I tipped Collingwood. But that was a much better showing from my Dees. Really good quality games from across the park. Clever to bring another tall in on debut, too, since that is where we have struggled, and I really like what we saw of Parry.

Poor Collingwood got off to a slow start, and were cooked after a brief resurgence once Brazill went. Hope she is OK, didn't look good.

Lambert was excellent, as always, as was Davy. But I'm convinced aliens have kidnapped Layton and replaced her with a robot. She is so good now. Her improvement is out of this world. That is a tough loss for the 'Pies, they are playing good footy but can't afford to drop many more. Their run home is not "easy" but is perhaps a little easier than some other teams near them, so that may help. They deserve to make finals the way they have played.

Very pleased with all "my" Dees. Paxman was a beast. It is astonishing how consistent she is. And I think she interviews well also.

Scott has really lifted this year, and did so again, and it was good to see Cunningham have her best game this season. And Downie, and particularly Birch, were a wall at the back, as usual. Very happy!

Hope the Origin is good, and no major injuries.

Love what she does, she was IMHO a little under rated last year (after hurting herself before she could debut as our top draft pick the year before, I guess she didn't have any hype for last season), but it is a tough gig coming into our midfield. With Mithen out, it is super important that Hanks churns out that sort of game, and she had done it all season. She has great skills.

Collingwood haven't used Molloy out of the goal square anywhere near enough (if at all?). And she'll probably only be spending more time down back steadying the ship if the Brazill's injury is worst case scenario. Every forward-line needs a Sarah D'Arcy, but not as the focal point where she's required to win the miracle contest with the ball popped on top of her head again and again.

Tips for today!

Tigers-Cats: On a ground almost as narrow as Kardinia Park, in a Victorian town only moderately more regional than Geelong, the Cats may well feel at home—just like the past two weeks, which hasn't counted for much unlike '19. One of these winless teams needs the 4 points and it doesn't matter how ugly they play to get them, the other just needs to show an ability to kick 5-6 goals and avoid dumb mistakes such as leaving Olivia Purcell alone at a forward 50 stoppage. There's a decent chance neither ends up happening. GEE by 12

Roos-Suns: No more than two teams can truly surprise me this weekend. The intriguing part about that is they (Gold Coast and St Kilda, I speak of) have already surprised me twice this season. If it happens a third time, consider my lesson learned. The Suns should be able to make this a highly attacking match-up with their quick transitional style, unless they get cold feet about getting burnt on the rebound. NM by 50*

Eagles-Dogs: I like simple solutions for simple problems. West Coast's forward-line is struggling, so they bring in their most talented goal-kicker and name her at full-forward. It's a very winnable game for the Eagles, their first one in fact, made even more so by the Bulldogs' list of experienced outs including Poor Little Gogos (for what will probably be the rest of the season), Deanna Berry and Brooke Lochland. And yet Nicole Callinan, the smoothie produced when those three injured premiership players are put in a blender together, still can't get a game? That feels like Nathan Burke is overlooking simple solutions. I guess he knows what he's doing… but a loss here would prompt a second guess. WB by 18

The only thing worse than Richmond is the Umpiring, there were a couple of 50m penalties that were extremely harsh.

Picturesque oval in Bendigo with an elegant old main stand.

Geelong running away with it that quarter.

I felt some of the calls were a bit unlucky too, and the 50 m penalty seems extra harsh in the AFLW, if nothing else than because "free" goals are worth that much more when time is shorter and goals are at a premium.

But Richmond will have to learn a bit more discipline (much like my team, who keep giving away goals to 50 m penalties) as the umpires are not shy of awarding them for slight infringements, even though they have a big impact.

Oval is indeed lovely.

I say it every week, but I love watching Cranston play. Good to see McWilliams get a bit more involved, she has not had the season Geelong needs so far.

Conti and Wakefield fighting hard for Richmond, they need a few more to lift.

That was a much better quarter from Richmond, Geelong looked to be running away with after kicking the first two goals but they fought back well and looked the better team for the last 10 minutes.
The bump on Katie Brennan didn’t look good, hope she will be okay.

Richmond blown away in a poor 20 minutes (much like last week) but otherwise were quite good. A steep learning curve for the newbies, but they haven't been terrible.

Lots of points, was an entertaining match. Conti brilliant from start to finish. Geelong finally found ways to score that didn't involve Purcell. Many contributions up front, which is a good sign for them.

Expecting the newbies in the next one to struggle too, but not through want of trying, or running. Hard to see the Suns winning, I think they'll be doing well to be in touch at three quarter time. They have had a good season for a new team and show some promise.

But North should have too much star power across the park. They are an impressive line up.

Great game so far. North probably had the most opportunity this quarter, but a poor defensive error at the end there gives the Suns a lead, and they have been running their boots off.

North look a bit more efficient in their disposals, but Suns are competing in every contest and often have a loose player, just through hard work. Plenty to admire about this Suns outfit.
