U18 Champs Round 4 - SA vs Allies

I see Rankine as a Daniel Rioli type at this stage. And what concerns me is at times, in every game i have seen, is he can be selfish.

For me that is a concern
doesnt have that as much when playing SANFL
not a major concern imo

X factor wise, probably rate him pick 1. Defensively doesn't stay in the game, no left side and while he can have a patch where he can change a game, has some very selfish, strange moments

Will watch his 2nd half of the year closely

I hate this, if reports are correct and Rankine is making it known that he wants to stay in SA something needs to be done about it. eg. If 3 or more heads of recruitment at clubs let the integrity arm of the AFL know of this sort of thing happening said player is excluded from the draft until the following year.

In saying that if we rank him as the highest rated at our first selection this year I would like to see us back our system in and take him, similar things were said about Cam Rayner last season.
Yeh but you can't tell a kid he has to lie. It's just a shit situation all round

Some of the best players to play the game have been selfish, zero issues for me on that.

It depends on what he says. If he tells clubs that if they draft him he wont go to them and will sit it out then he is in breach of the contract he signed when he nominated for the draft. There is nothing wrong with him being up front saying he is a family man and wants to stay in SA, and that after his first year or two he will ask for a trade home. Nothing of that breaks AFL rules. Clubs can then make a decision about if they want to take that risk.

Everyone's a family man though, as good as saying don't draft me or else if you tell a club you'll be asking for a trade in 2 years. What happened to- I'll be grateful just to get drafted and happy to go anywhere to live out my childhood dream.

With Izak in virtually every pundits top 5, some have him top 3, IMO it would stink to high heaven if he slides to the Crows (currently 8&13).

Would you have drafted Aish if he warned you he wanted to play for the Pies with his mate Grundy?
Would you have wanted to know that in advance?

Ben Jarvis is not getting the creds for his performances these champs. He is a handfull around goals.
yep
as a guy that started on the bench in the first game facing getting cut went out sbd kicked 3 in game 1

lots pf draftable traits

No, which is a sad indictment on the entitlement culture of players pre draft or in their initial contract IMO.

I would be for an initial 3 year contract for draftees in the first 2 rounds and then any player coming OOC after their 2nd contract is an UFA with no compensation. Also get rid of club run and funded academies, NGAs, possible zones (AFL to fund) and put every player in the open draft. Keep father/sons but no discount.

Rankine = Akermanis

Playing ability, style and ego?

That wont work for the clubs. If the player can walk anywhere they like after maybe 4 years, without compo, then clubs should be allowed to trade players in contract to any team they like.

Meaning what?....The number one player in the league?...As opposed to the best pressure forward in the comp?

Cyril has never had the tank nor the hamstrings for a consistent midfield role....Though he does have a Normie & 4 Premiership medallions to his name....If Rankine can achieve half of that, then he'll be doing well.

Cameron from Brisbane would be more the better comparison for mine.
Haha settle down , he didn't say Cyril was a letdown . Far from it

Rankine = Akermanis

Playing ability, style and ego?

I've often compared Rankine to Akermanis, with a bit of Wingard and Walters thrown in. His sidestep is absolutely elite. Comfortably the most talented kid in the country atm for any position, has the makings of a dominant and destructive footballer. And not to worry about his tank, he plays his best footy in the middle and running forward, that's how he destroyed the Under 18's as a 15 yo.

I agree. One of the arguments for the current northern state academy set up (ie linking to the clubs) is that it is important to offer these boys the possibility of staying at home when they get drafted (because AFL is competing for talent against other sports that can offer that). We can't get upset with youngsters from other states expressing a preference for staying at home.

My guess is that if you asked all draftees if they'd rather stay at home, a sizeable majority would say yes. But most of them, when forced to move, adapt and settle into their new clubs within a short period of time. There will always be some who decide to leave after their first contract expires but they're not the majority. It's just up to the clubs to make them feel at home, and it is harder to get them to stay when the club is struggling a bit onfield.

I posted about Rankine's selfishness after watching two of his games in 2017 - From my limited viewing this year it's still an issue.

It almost sounds like draft tampering

As a club if he is clearly at the top of your board around your pick the options are:

1. Try to trade back to the Crows for their 1st pick + ?

2. Trade back to some other club who is prepared to take the risk on him

3. If no one wants to trade up then pick him up in the draft:

i) see if he settles and keep him;

or

ii) if he still demands to go home then you auction him off to the highest bidder of the Power or Crows
iii) If he demands that he will only go to one of those club and they only make a low ball offer then be prepared to send him to the draft and send a message
