Heading into this weekend this game was shaping up as a battle between a couple of unbeaten premiership contenders and now it shapes up as an even more important match up between 2 sides who were given a bit of a touch up who will be looking to rebound and get their seasons back on track.

Richmond are coming off arguably their worst performance since the 2018 Preliminary Final will head into the game missing a handful of best 22 players with Cotchin Vlastuin Prestia KMac & possibly Houli all missing, which is similar to the same game in 2019 when we came off to hidings and headed to Port minus Cotchin Martin Riewoldt & Houli and came away with the 4 points.

Meanwhile Port were made to look like anything but a genuine premiership threat against West Coast until some late junk time goals brought some respectability to the scoreboard (sound familiar), add to that the loss in last years Preliminary Final when they were expecting to account for Richmond and capitalise on their dominance in the 2020 season but fell short.

Recent History

2020 Preliminary Final
Port 6.4.40 lost to Richmond 6.10.46

This game was arguably the game of the 2020 season, with the game pretty much goal for goal right through the game with neither team taking a backward step.

Some big moments from this game

Duursma getting in Toms face after kicking a regulation goal and thinking he'd won Port the game and acting like a complete and utter bogan.

That man Duursma front and centre once again as he dropped a simple chest mark that would have given him a chance to put Port a goal up heading into half time.

Hartlett gifting Richmond a spot in the Grand Final after deliberately hitting the ball out of bounds.

Round 11 2020 Port 13.15.93 def Richmond 11.6.72
Richmond coming off a 4 day break and flying in the morning of the match went toe to toe with Port for 3 quarters before eventually fading late. Looking back this game gave us to confidence heading into the prelim that we could match it with Port on their deck given they had all the advantages heading into this game.

Round 18 2019 Richmond 15.11.101 def Port 9.9.63
In a rare game against Port at the MCG the Tigers won comfortably as they marched towards the 2019 Premiership.

Round 4 2019 Port 14.8.92 lost to Richmond 15.9.99
As mentioned at the top this game is similar to the game this week, where Richmond headed to Port minus a handful of best 22 players in a backs to the wall type of game that had we lost may well have curtailed our 2019 season as we'd have been 1-3, but the Tigers with Lynch kicking 6 and some youngsters stepping up to fill the void leading the way ran out winners and got their season back on track.

Key Match Ups

Balta v Dixon

Dixon and Balta had a couple of decent battles last year with Charlie having 6 shots on goal in the regular season game last year while Balta had the better of Dixon in the prelim. Balta holding Dixon to a couple of goals will go a way to help us coming away victorious

Lynch & Riewoldt v Allir & Jonas

Neither of our big forwards have really hit their straps, while Allir and Jonas started the season in good nick, they did get a bit of touch up against the Eagles big forwards. So if Jack and Lynch can find some form and our delivery into the F50 can be neatened up they could finally start performing like the dangerous duo we need them to be.

Nankervis v Lycett/Ladhams

Nankervis has been solid to start the season, but will need to be at his best to give our midfield missing a few first choice mids a chance to break even against the Power midfield that is at full strength. When Nank rests we need to have an alternative option that can contest the ruck as we can't take Astbury/Balta away from the D50 with Port loading up with Dixon Marshall & Ladhams in their F50.

Midfield Battle

As mentioned our mids will be understrength with Prestia & Cotchin likely missing, which means the likes Ross and Graham are going to have to step up and fill the void along with Edwards and Bolton if we're going to give ourselves a real chance of coming away with the point.

Likely Line Up
B: Astbury Balta Grimes
HB: Short Broad Baker
C: Pickett Graham Caddy
HF: Bolton Lambert Castagna
F: Riewoldt Lynch Rioli
R: Nankervis Martin Edwards
INT: Aarts Ross Chol Ralphsmith/Martyn/Dow/RCD

Prediction:
A tough tight game that will go down to the wire with the winner only getting up by 1-2 goals.

Head says Port by 10 points
Heart says Tigers by 11 points

big ask for the kids to step up

then again....that’s exactly what happened in 2019...as mentioned in the excellent OP....we were on the ropes with massive injuries...losses...and the kids stood up against Poort at moRon park round 4

it was the making of baker et al

time for a new breed of tigers to make a name for themselves

Baker back too the forward line or maybe wing .?
With the speed of the game i think changing our backline for the second ruck is throwing out our key backs .
Numerous times on the weekend we were completely out of position.
This means dropping a midfielder or someone like Broad too play a second ruck forward .
Balta looks great in the ruck but it's unsettling the backline and Astbury doesn't have a clue in the ruck or up the ground in general play .
