Autopsy Round 5, 2025: Hawks refuse to join Gather Round

So this is their Grand Final. Seems I heard that before against other sides.
I can't understand why Sam doesn't have Fin on a hard tag from the start of the game so he can prepare for the tag.
Is tagging not a part of our game plan any more it doesn't suit our style of play??
Power would have beaten us by a 100 if they could have as others have pointed out. We played much better in the second half which I find encouraging.

Maybe. Maybe just a stopgap (which is better than nothing). Does Moore have history as a full time mid during his time at Box Hill?
He’s been given full games as a mid before and performed admirably at AFL level.

He’s still a better forward but it will be worth giving him more midfield time as good as Mackenzie and Ward have been on the outside, their contested work isn’t quite to the level needed yet

The strangest thing about Port is that they are sore winners.

That's not very common in football - it's a special kind of shit-headedness. Maybe they're head****ed? Who knows.

Imagine that - you won a final against a club and the coach (yes the coach) decides to start sledging their players during a 300 game salute for Luke Breust.

And then somehow the sledging club holds a grudge against them going into the next game.

And Rioli decides to flaunt and milk a free kick when the side is five goals up and pretty much guaranteed the win.

And the fans grab onto all this moronic shit with both hands. It's embarrassing. if it wasn't so pathetic it would get me really riled up, but it doesn't.

Like really - this is lowest common denominator stuff. Real bottom feeder stuff. Don't fall into it. The ones participating in it are dumber and more experienced at this moronic crap than you are.

This was asked in the presser last night and Mitchell was blunt about shitting it down BUT I feel like Day's absence was a lot more impactful as when we need a lift he's been the guy to attack the ball and drag the team with him. Last night everyone just watched and waited for someone else to go and win that hard ball and it was at times infuriating to just have a few players watching as Port grabbed the ball and made a clean exit.

Last year we were 0-5 without Day at the start of the year, his return gave us a spark and the team lifted as a result.

We are much better as a team now but last night it felt like we lacked that leader to stand up in the middle. When you go back to our best sides in recent history, you would have Hodge, Mitch, Lewis, Sewell who would always lift when we were lacking that appetite and aggression. We didn't really see that last night until the game was well and truly over.

They are a ****ing small time club with a massive chip on their shoulder, always have been. They need to create an 'us vs them' narrative to get themselves up for games.

You know when we continually lost to the Cats in the middle 2010s it was annoying but at least we were losing to a team I could (grudgingly) respect.

Continually losing to Port though, that just leaves a sick taste in the back if my throat 🤮. That pack of absolute campaigners, bleh!

One thing I have noticed about Sam though is he is pretty good at getting the team to move on quickly from bad losses so I think they will shrug this one off and be up for the fight on Easter Monday.
Spot on, at least we always played the Cats at the MCG, it seems like the last 6 or 7 games against Port have been at the Adelaide Oval with Port on an emotionally charged rebound after previous humiliation. I can't recall playing Port at the MCG since the 2014 Preliminary Final.

1) Midfield couldn't win a contest. Meek's taps were nullified by Sweet (who plays him well). Worpel was rusty and Nash/Mackenzie were having stinkers. Newcombe tagged.

2) Our small forwards just let their opponents transition off them. Ginnivan, Wiz and Moore were all horrendous in that area and it created a constant outnumber. Multiple times Port handballed blindly over their heads to a target because our smalls weren't playing accountable.
These two things exactly explained the issues we had. We definitely need another big body mid there as Mackenzie was easily brushed off. For what ever it is worth we should test Hustwaite there soon now that he is perfoming well.

You are correct about small forwards. They are too attack conscious and that is fine when we win the ball. More times yesterday they had 8 to 9 players playing against 3 to 4 Hawks in their forward half with many of them free to take a hand pass or kick receive.
We should have tagged JHF or Butters and our exposure was mainly in contested footy.

We weren't up mentally for this game and i can't work out why. And Port was which was to be expected. Very disappointing first half letting them run riot like that but we did show something in the second half.

Against Geelong, it goes without saying we must be ready to go otherwise it might be a similar outcome.

I'm wondering if Sam took the 'it's just another game' mental approach to try and take the mental intensity out of it and it back fired as we looked like we didn't give two hoots in the early part of the match. While this would work for a clinical player like Sam Mitchell maybe not for most of the current players. Meanwhile Kenny has his players wound up like there's no tomorrow. Oh well, we live and learn.

Apologies for the negativity but I really dunno if I've seen enough really good footy from us over the first 5 weeks to tell me we're a top 4 team. Now there's plenty of time left in the year, and we will hopefully hit our straps but we haven't dominated games like we did last year at all. Teams have really gone to work on us and Mitchell will need to figure it out and adapt.

We've beaten 4 teams who all brought extreme pressure. We haven't dominated because of that pressure but we've still won

Hope you are watching GWS play. Because thats a good reason. They threw a lot of punches at us in that game before the bye.

I agree with this but I thought once Moore went in we got a little bit of this spark back

I don't think Sammy would do it but would love to see Moore get Day's mid minutes for an extended period of time and play Bruest for a full game in his absence

I find it really strange, I've never seen anything like it in sports.

I think people misconstrued the selfies and goal celebrations last year for disrespecting the opposition or something.

It's all just very odd.

I'm glad we finally get them in Tassie in R19.

Having to play Port Adelaide again at Adelaide Oval during Gather Round was an insult considering the succession of Adelaide Oval meetings we've had over the past few seasons. And you're right, we haven't played Port at the MCG since 2014. And David Koch has the nerve to complain about Gather Round programming

I think a lot of us are hitting the panic button after yesterday. We have played nowhere near our best and are sitting at 4-1. Its a long way till September but If we look at the whole picture (including how the other clubs have played so far) then we should finish in the top 4. Geelong,Lions,Hawks and the Suns should round out the top 4 this year. I see GWS and Adelaide as the 2 clubs that could displace the Suns from the top 4.

I thought it was the opposite last night - we all went to the ball and nobody was on the outside ready to defend or receive.

Bees to the honey pot stuff.

It was like we lost trust in each other or the absence of Day everyone thought they had to go in to win the hard stuff.

I wouldn't stress about the fans. They'll forget all about it and put back up the "Sack Hinkley" banners at Alberton by next weekend.
