Autopsy Round 5, 2026: Hawks kick the Dogs

Great pressure 4 quarter effort.

Interesting to see how well we played despite losing Chol midway thru the game.

Thought Barass was immense down back.

Perez looks like a very good player. How was he not on a list? You wonder how many more there are out there that fall thru the net.

A ridiculously good performance from Ginnivan as others have pointed out already.

Both captains playing like they want to hold the cup this year. All of the talent watchers that let Jai slip to the MSD have convinced me that they've misread the ceiling on OG.

Will Day going to fit very nicely onto a wing as part of the rotation. Weddell going to have a breakout game soon.

Really bizarre fixturing to play the same team twice before a bye.

There are a string of teams we play twice before we play teams we haven't yet played. Weird fixturing 🤦‍♂️

I feel like Weddle is at risk of becoming one of those guys who doesn't end up excelling at one position and becomes the jack of all trades but master of none.

So what? A player that can be thrown anywhere to plug a hole is worth his weight in gold. In the three-peat years we had Silk, Hodge and Rough. Right now we only have Weds.
Do you think Cats are pissed Blicavs doesn't excel in any specific role?

The number of one-on-ones Chol wins and his elite tackling make his hole difficult to fill. He generates a lot of shot at goal. But we have a very nice like-for-like replacement waiting at box hill.

It's actually the work he does up the ground and his field kicking that we will miss most.

Former Geelong player Adrian Hickmott.

Completely forgot Hickmott started his career at the Cats. I always remembered him as a former Blues player.

Had a footy reunion last night. Had the game on a big screen and it was just emphatic by the Hawks. It's just poor conversion preventing big scores/blowouts atm.

The whole crew bagged Kingy. What a douche. Nearly as bad as Dermott's pre-match rambling but at least that was a health message.

Just a quick question. Has holding the ball changed? Just for context the Hawks nailed the doggies in tackles time and time again with the dogs just flopping to the ground making no attempts, at all, to move the ball on.
They do seem to be running a different interpretation this year. Seen a few fend off then tackled go un rewarded, and a few multiple steps into the tackle too. Still, early season, worth looking at around round 10

How much u wanna bet ginni will start getting hard tagged starting next week?

Can't wait for will day to return!

Any kayo watchers here? I've noticed the cameras focused on the game are blocky but during commercials/half time and commentary cameras, it's smooth as. Is this a my tv problem or does anyone else get this?

Go hawks!

Most teams have at best 1 player who can actually do an effective tag, which means if they choose Ginni then Newk, Watson, Croc and Moore are free. Choose your poison I suppose.

Superb win. Incredible atmosphere at Gather Round too - strong recommend for any footy fan.

Ginnivan and Newcombe hard to split for BOG. Despite Newcombe’s career best clearances, I’m going Ginnivan. Think he delivered the ball for 6 direct goals. He’s become unbelievable.

Overall very strong team performance. We are purring nicely. Loved the response to the flat end to third quarter

Ginnivan, Newcombe, Sicily, Lewis, Meek, Reeves, Hardwick, Watson all great.
Ok that's interesting, would've been great to have been there, watching the replay it doesn't seem to sound like there was a great atmosphere there. I guess there were a lot of neutrals

i don't see us dropping the two-ruck combo anytime soon. I reckon Meek has been great with the help from Reeves. 16 possession, 5 tackles and a goal shows me he is enjoying a bit more freedom. He is going well ATM.
Meek was fantastic yesterday. Really threw his weight around, was clean with the ball and pulled down a pair of contested marks. That’s him at his best.

Blake Hardwick really doesn't get enough credit. He was brilliant last night. The guy is going to be one of those players who'll never win an individual accolade, but you just love having on the field.
Was actually thinking last night that I really hope we win a flag with Hardwick in the team. Not too many more deserving than him.

Hodge, Rough and Silk were all elite ball users. Weds is a long way off an elite ball user.

Weds is struggling atm with timing his run in the air, and his disposal is horrible.

He just needs to relax a bit. It’ll come, we’ve got great coaches for him. Has the attributes, just needs some tuning.

The point I was making was about versatility. Blicavs isn't an elite ball user but he goes ok.

Weds field kicking is a major issue.

Yeah he can play all over the place, but I think he’s struggling with some confidence and that may come as a result of being all over the place.

Constantly running under the ball is a sure sign of a lack of confidence.

If we are going to take the next step as a team, Weds needs to take the next step himself. His versatility is because of his athleticism and physical attributes, not his ability to play different positions or his disposal. That’s the difference.

He’s young, he’s exciting and I love him, but he’s got some work to do to be in a Hodge/Silk type of plug in anywhere level.

I trust the coaches to make it happen. And I trust Weds to make it happen.

They can say Tim English missing this and that. We would of beaten them if he was playing...We were up and about full of confidence after the Cats win...and putting some voodoo sh*t to bed. Who they shouldn't have played was Ed Richards injured. Dumb move and cost them equally..he's a gun and now he's going to be out for some time.

Newcombes got maturity in his role as Captain and said I'm going beast mode in this game and were not going to lose! Macrae probably doesn't watch Hawks games because Ginnivan is giving him the shivers. Oh what he'd do to have him back.
Sicily's moustache is giving him super powers.

Theirs actually not many players who can run with him now, elite tank and quick feet. He would do you head in to tag

Weddle is 21 years old FFS. Hodge, Silk and Rough were never asked or even able to do what Weddle is being asked to do at the same age.

That's been the standout for me this year, he's popping up everywhere and staying involved throughout the whole game.

He'd still be stuck in a forward pocket if he played for the pies.
