Tell me something BW. I know we have had our differences before about Houlihan, but what I don't understand is why you blindly defend him at pretty much every chance you get.

IMO, he is a far more dangerous footballer when he is played up forward, with some bursts in the midfield. He is good overhead, and certainly knows where the goals are. He can basically maximise his silky skills to more advantage.

Someone needs to make way for Houlihan - i can only see him and Russell being the two. Russell seems to be getting first crack at this point in time (much to my annoyance). Grigg was good at times but Houlihan is still at this point a class above. Houlihan will not, despite what people have said in this thread, be playing in the reserves next week. If he is fit, he will play.

l reckon that is complete rubbish that Houihan is a class above Grigg even at this stage, Houihan gets the easy ball, and why would you even consider bringing him back over a player that has a long term future such as Grigg who had 15 possessions and was a solid performer.

I don't think Grigg did too much with the ball yesterday, his disposal was really ordinary, where as Houla keeps his head under pressure.

l would suggest Houla keeping his head under pressure is very debatable, he has been known to make decision making errors over a long period, what sort of message are you sending to a young player who has performed well in probably our best win for five years and you make a decision to drop a young player for the second time for the year, l hardly suggest that is the way to develop these young guys, l am pretty sure Ratten will make players like Houla earn their spot, which can only be good for the team.

It's no coincidence that with Houlihan out we played our best game in years. His mere presence breeds laziness and lack of intensity.

Is it right that the game this week is at 1.10pm??

They weren't my words but Brett Ratten's. When have I ever said where he should play? If you'd gone to the Family day you'd have heard Ratten say he will be used all over the ground according to team need. I assure you that he plays where he's asked to and unlike you, doesn't question or grumble. Ratten said above he will be used as a rotating running defender in the future. With Simpson & Walker. Are you happy about that? Take it up with him if you think you're such an expert. How many times have you posted that same thing? If I had $1 for each I'd be a millionaire. Give it a rest.

The way I see the ruck situation (and also forwards) there are a couple of options:

Cloke and Hampson with Kreuzer in a forward role
Cloke and Kreuzer and O'Hailpin (which is what we used last week)

I'd still like to see Hartlett come in for O'Hailpin as I think another target inside 50 is desperately needed. But how does Hampson fit into the 22 at the moment when apparently Cloke is a lock and Kreuzer seems preferred for the 2nd ruckman spot due to his ability to play forward? I don't know if Cloke, Kreuzer, Hampson and Hartlett/O'Hailpin can fit in the same team.

Thankyou for not answering my question at all.

Houla is a good player, but as most posters have said, played out of position. He reminds me of a Dale Thomas type, all looks aside. He's a burst player that can use his skill and footy smarts to be effective as a forward. Unfortunately he has been used as a defender and lost a lot of kudos due to his lack of accountability and at times confidence. This player should be re-built, if you like, as an attacking forward. Plenty of posters rubbish him, even by myself at times, due to frustration. I think the team has developed enough now that Houla can be released into the forward line and achieve the level of success he has probably deserved for some time. We should know pretty quickly if his re-positioning has worked. If not he may be looking for a new home come years end. Don't let us down Ryan, you're better than most people think.

Don't mean to be rude, but if you believe anything of the sort that Grigg is currently in the same league as Houlihan then you know nothing about football.

and why would you even consider bringing him back over a player that has a long term future such as Grigg who had 15 possessions and was a solid performer.

One thing, Grigg was far from spectacular. I'm a big fan of him but hey - we won, yes, but that doesn't mean the whole team played well. Apart from that goal that he scored in the last term he was at an average standard for the majority of the day and looked lost when he had the ball from my p.o.v. He had a tough task in Shaw however and that must come into account of course.

Oh and btw saying that dropping Grigg for Houlihan is wrong due to age factor, is an absolute cop out. Why don't you just play Edwards and Hartlett ahead of Fevola and Fisher then!

Not at the expense of Grigga. Whilst Heath Shaw had more possessions, he had no real influence whatsoever. Grigga did his job.

Grigg to keep his spot

Fair enough BG. I'd personally like to see Russ make way but i think Ratten prefers him at this stage (i have no idea why).

Other than Hartlett for O'hAilpin, I don't see any need to change the team.

Carrazzo did a good job dropping back into their forwardline on Sunday and was alot more effective than Houlihan in this role. He's always been a better defender after starting his career as a backman who would take and beat someone as quick as Davey. Carrots cut off at least two forward thrusts with nicely judged marks at CHB to support his defenders on Sunday.

Great teamwork from Andrew.

I don't usually agree with Wilson, but I agree with her comment that Richmond shouldn't bring back Bowden after their great win on the weekend. We shouldn't rush Houlihan back either when the 22 played as a team to win us the points on the weekend. We have than enough midfielders, wingers and flankers to get the job done against Melbourne on Sunday. Gibbs or Grigg are capable of playing on Green, so there's no need to rush Houlihan back for this match.

The young players will develop faster and grow if they think Ratten rates them.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If we drop Russell after that sort of win, I think Sunday will be the last time Russell will have worn Navy Blue.

Our forwardline is a different matter altogether and could do with Hartlett's height, long kicking and another two or three goals this week.

Bring in the Hitman.

Houlihan can perfect sweeping his hair behind his ears at Princes Park this week.

And you do know after posting the comment I highlighted below.

Our forwardline is a weakness and Fevola centric, our midfielders more options than you can poke a stick at now.

Hardly a fair comparison. ;)

I think i would just about be Jordan Russell's biggest critic, the guy drives my up the wall, he makes silly decisions and has terrible skills at time, but lets be honest, if he had no skill, he would never have gone top 10 in the national draft.
He is a guy that is low on confidence and i'm pretty sure a guy by the name of Dennis Pagan would have something to do with that.
During the game on sunday i think we saw two side of Jordan, he started off shaky and looked out of his depth, but as the game went on, and the blues looked like winning he started to play ok.
now i know some people will call him a front runner and all that shit, but there was something there, something i haven't seen while he has been at Carlton.
The guy should be given a few more weeks to earn his spot before he is sent packing.
A little bit of self belief and i think he might have a future at princess park.

No changes for mine. We had a win and while the bullants were impressive I don't believe anybody smashed the door down. Stick with and build a settled line up.

Why hasn't Jakey Edwards had a senior game in the last two weeks?

I say drop setanta and bring in Edwards

Carlos might be the only that will struggle to retain his spot in the 22, especially since Hartlett and Edwards kicked bags each last weekend for the Ants.

Key Match Ups
Fisher - Rivers
Carroll - Fevola
Carrazzo - McLean
Hadley - Bruce/Jones
Simpson - Green
Jamison - Neitz
Thornton - Robertson
Bower - Morton
Waite - Jamar
McDonald - Stevens

Who knows with Juddy. They really dont have anyone to match his pace. Possibly McDonald will go with him at stoppages but around the ground im struggling to find someone. Davey anyone??? Probably not anyhow.

Good post. They seem to be backing him at the moment. He might not progress this year and then get axed but who knows, if he can build his confidence he could really cement a spot. More wins will help the confidence of all our younguns too.
