AFLW Round 6 - 2025 AFLW Season

A slew of easy misses in Q1 there by the Cats. Port gonna get let off the hook again?

Georgie Prespakis doing what she likes, helped by teammates who actually give her the ball. Quite a contrast to Dowrick who runs past Goody for an easy handball receive and gets bupkis.

I know Hipwell is injured, but should that have been a free to Centra? That looked like a trip to me.

HUGE HIT... between Hampson and Sheerin, so much so it sent me into next week! I'll be commenting on O'Dea's poleaxing of Kilpatrick in the Round 7 thread.

Port and Geelong is now game on. PA's lesser good players coming to the party in Q2 (including Pope, who has only played 30 games) which gives them a great shot here, especially while Parry keeps blowing chances.

Are we thinking channel seven should have at least one game on today? Or the AFLW website? How can they expect the struggling competition to get support? I'm honestly stunned. Not sure whose decision that was but completely bizarre and made by executives with limited brain cells.

Great game albeit confirming both team's status as not-genuine-contenders this year.

To have it be decided in that fashion... "disgraceful" doesn't come close. The players are fighting for their lives out there and we give them rookie umps who simply aren't up to it.

Congratulations to Fremantle, they become the 5th team to reach 50 wins in the AFLW.

It took Freo 90 games to reach that milestone.

Melbourne took 66 games (Rd 2 2023)
Adelaide took 69 games (Rd 3 2023)
Brisbane took 74 games (Rd 10 2023)
North Melbourne took 71 games (Rd 10 2024)

PA vs Geel votes

Best
3 - Georgie Prespakis
This is probably the moment when the atmosphere starts to bubble inside Crown Palladium, or wherever they hold the W Awards. I've got her down for a 3rd straight 3-voter.
2 - Mikayla Bowen
Gets the 2 with or without the late free kick and goal. 8 tackles inside 50 to go with a power of work up and down the field.
1 - Matilda Scholz
Dominated the ruck as expected, and presented well which included some very promising link-up plays with Lauren Young. Only used it at 39% but the other choice was Nina Morrison (stiff to miss out with 16 kicks and 2 goals) who wasn't super clean either at 44%, and Port Adelaide deserved 1 mention like last week.

Worst
1 - Gemma Houghton
Kicked a goal from 1 of her 4 touches (on a tough day for a key forward) and dropped a chest mark in the middle of the ground.
2 - Kate Surman
Statistically one of her better games this year with 11 disposals at 55%, and 6 tackles. Nevertheless tripped over herself all day and grubbed kick after kick.
3 - Justine Mules-Robinson
In addition to a poor stat sheet, for doing non-leader stuff like the following: free kick 45m out paid to teammate (think it was Goody), JMR has the ball in her hands and without looking just piffs it at the feet of her upright teammate who is a metre away.

NM v Carl votes

Best
3 - Ash Riddell
21 and 1... at half time? She should change her name to Jokell or sumfing, cuz she's takin da piss.
2 - Jasmine Garner
Had the secret teleporter out there today again, I think she's got access to three portals which she traverses through without anybody noticing: 1 is in the middle of the ground, 1 is 30m out at the Fogarty Street end, and the other is on the goal line at the swimming pool end.
1 - Tess Craven
Did some beautiful open space things and you could argue such-and-such was just as deserving because we're definitely having to split hairs here.

Worst
1 - Kelli Underwood
Confused O'Shea for Bogue, Mia King for O'Loughlin, Eddey for Amy Smith and about 30 other players who really shouldn't be hard to tell apart if you've called 800 AFLW games. But worst of all are her attempts at special comments (today consisted of repeating "North are bulla-ying the Blues" and "please, Harf, tell me Sydney will beat them!!!").
2 - Jess Good
Little gained by her addition (including -13 metres), and many problems added. And don't think I'm just talking about today. Considering the shortage of rucks at other clubs, she and the likes of Emma King should be taking a lot of calls come December.
3 - Darcy Vescio
0 tackles from Carlton's $35 million recipient.

Similar to my query about Blackburn not playing in the middle why are Carlton trying to change Vescio into a defender? I know she wasn't scoring much but I felt that was more a function of a poor midfield and delivery rather than lack of goal kicking ability. Or have I missed the plot entirely?

Vescio spent many seasons doing nothing in the forward line, doesn't look up to it anymore. Gone ok down back.

Definitely different to Blackburn who was prolific in the midfield non-stop for 9-and-a-bit seasons.

40+ disposals in an AFLW game:

42 - A. Riddell (NM) vs WCE, R10 2022 S6
42 - C. Rowbottom (GC) vs GWS, R3 2024
41 - L. Gardiner (Syd) vs BL, R3 2023
41 - E. Marinoff (Adel) vs GWS, R7 2024
40 - E. Marinoff (Adel) vs GWS, R4 2023
40 - A. Riddell (NM) vs Frem, R3 2025
