On the other hand, the Washcroft v Naicos question was settled.
Good to have that one settled now, while they're 22 and 20 and the younger missed a year with an ACL.

Embarrassed. Flogged.

The only positive is Sam Marshall. Must play more - the class is obvious.

Not entirely- Josh is 26 and Nick 22, whereas Will is 20 and Levi 18, which is not like for like. It may be a more end of career thing.

edit- dlanod got there before me.

How do you rate ND Dlanod ?

I hate Collingwood but I don't think I've seen anyone as good as him for some time. Sure he has to build up a bigger body of work but he's getting better.

As you say I don't think a comparison with Ashcroft is fair at this stage . In fact I don't think it's fair to compare anyone with ND.

…settled for this outing. There will be more!
i think we forget Will has played only 36 games. Nick Daicos is up to 75.
Daicos is an amazing footballer IMO.
Will would be very flat with that performance I’d have thought. Barely sighted and some of his efforts defensively weren’t great. That said, Collingwood had all the momentum and it’s easy to look bad when that’s the case.

Both clubs are lucky to have secured A grade talent without having to pay for it. There’s no doubt Nick Daicos is the better player right now - his pace is seriously good along with his gut running. Will has been good too, but is only 20 and a few games back off a knee. Let’s assess again in a few years!

Na when Linc was playing the defensive forward Charlie was off the leash, now he's playing the defensive forward and it's not his gig. Of course his form is suffering, playing a role you're not suited to is like being played out of position.
OK coach.
His kicking for goal has been atrocious. He's missed easy goals regularly that has nothing to do with his role in the forward line.
His normal 1 on 1 scramble contests that he regularly won are now a stoppage. (at best)
He's down on form. Fingers crossed it comes back soon.

Cam Rayner’s stats warrant examination. In the third quarter he had 81% time on ground and did not collect a single disposal or lay a singe tackle. In the second quarter he had one disposal, which came from a good mark and he kicked a goal. We need much more out of him. The same goes for Hipwood, who had one disposal in the second quarter and two in the third.

Both Hipwood and Rayner have the ability to break games open and do extraordinary things, but I would love to swap some of that mercurial brilliance for less spectacular, but much more needed, consistency.

It would be great to be able to rely on them.
Hipwood's numbers are dependant on our midfield winning out of center clearances or a quick transition into the forward line. Our 2nd & 3rd quarters were pretty ordinary.

The umpires weren’t to blame for our loss last night, but I cringe every time Robert Findlay adjudicates our matches.

It’s an extremely tough job to umpire AFL football given how dynamic the game is, as well as the physical demands (lessened since the introduction of four). There’s also a stack of pressure and a need to support the craft to keep community umpiring ranks strong so the game can thrive. I am extremely supportive overall.

That said, Findlay has struggled with his positioning and equally his game awareness. As a senior umpire I expect better - some of the decisions by him last night were bewildering and an overreach which isn’t limited to the Pies game. Unlike Brett Rosbebury, the game has passed him by and hope we don’t have him too many more times this year.
Umpired the 2023 GF.
Any comments on his performance that day ?
(I don't remember and never re-watched it).

I’m in the same boat as you. Watched it live, will never rewatch it.
Based on all other games I’ve seen I’m sure there were a few decisions that went against us.

In contrast, I think Nathan Williamson is a terrific umpire. Umpired our prelim against Geelong and didn’t get intimidated by crowd reaction or the occasion. Hopefully we can start drawing him a bit more.

It appears that Sam Marshall played the day before in the Twos.

How and why did this occur?
He played the day after in the twos.
After playing 10 mins in the Seniors.

Coach? really? No need to get all narky just because someone has a different opinion to yours.

I knew you sounded familiar. Well done on winning the flag last year Chris and thanks for responding to my e-mails.

Credit to the Pies for stopping us going inside the vast majority of the game.
It did not appear we had a plan B last night at all.
We tried stuff for sure but mostly moving a few players around to try to negate the Pies better players.
Continued the mark kick game across half back trying to find a hole that rarely appeared.

The result a low number of I50's as you mentioned
Kiddy would have helped even Reville (injured though) when Zorko penetration is limited.
Pies forcing us wide so even if we marked, that still has us shooting from acute angles and mostly missing.

Lack of players work rate resulted in nobody to kick to, so the backs just shared it around until that long kick down the line.
Falling into the Pies plan of an intercept/spoil/stoppage as there mids were well on top.

What do you think our plan B should be? I don't think there was any option when we're getting beaten in every area of the game due to a lack of energy. If you're acknowledging the fact that they had us beaten in the clearances and intercept/spoil which stops us changing the game to a stoppage fest and long down the line then what could we do?

Our attack is at its best when our interceptors are positioned to get it to the playmakers in Wilmot and Zorko. Pies never seemed to tire so our game never got going, hence why our kick to handball ratio is way off what we usually have.

I would have thought they could have tried to use the handball and handball receive more to break up the Pies defense.
The slow kick sideways and back was not successful in finding a gap.

Agree we were getting beaten in most arears like previous games before we came good, but could not turn it around v Pies

Fox on the 50–77-meter penalty.
They were correct but i would have thought the (experts) discussion should have been also about the penalty that was not really there in the first place.
The AFL brought in a new rule starting in the 2023 season.
The incident happened right below me in the stands and it should not have been a 50-meter penalty.

A 50m penalty will no longer be paid if a player fakes a handball while behind the mark, drawing their opponent off their position.

Love the irony of umps continually calling kicks over 15 m play on, only to overestimate 50m by almost 30m.

Dispensing a Mulligan due to our schedule and match conditions to start the season

Four quarter performance from Pies they didn’t let us in…it’s something WE will need to practise at some point

We were cooked Thursday night and facts leading up to it makes it totally understandable:
a) Short Turnaround from last week
b) Multiple games in severe heat
c) Energy sapping close games with comebacks that were totally entertaining for us as supporters but taking it's toll on players.
d) Opposition understanding all of the above and using it to their advantage. Hard to say but Well Done Pies.

All that is true and maybe that was the reason.
Let's see how we go against the Saints away. At least i can cancel Kayo after that Saturday game.

I am hopeful for a win, but the Lions need to be more consistent over 4 quarters.
You don't have to win each quarter, but you need to be in the game and not chasing big deficits.

It's amateur hour. I watched some of the 3 games so far. Our games, lots of not 15 m, North mostly called not 15 m and seemed not to worry about it much in the Eagles game.

Or if I was a little kinder to him he was trying to take a diving mark.

In fact I don't think Logan knew they were there either.

There was no reaction from any of the players , Moore got up and ran off.
May have been a little dumb courage from Moore.

I didn’t think there was anything in it, just a little brain fade from a young player but definitely not an intentional action.

Right decision.
