tmiI was bummed before the game,
I don't see how we can blame the lack of bye or the cyclone challenge (which wasn't that big of an issue) when we haven't turned up for a full game at all this season. This loss was coming, and this could have happened the week before, or the week before, etc. We were found out last night and if we keep playing this way, we won't win the flag.No early season bye, lots of challenges (cyclone etc) and a 5 day break felt like it culminated in what we saw.
9 day break is worth its weight in gold.

Charlie ends up in the defensive 50 quite a lot. Seems like that mindset has come at the cost of being an offensive show pony.
Have to agree. You could see we weren't on from the start , just not focused with lethargic looking shots on goal , just a general malaise . I thought we tried hard enough and summoned some aggression but didn't have the legs or the energy. And they were really up for it and ruthless.Cumulative load is a real thing, and if your recovery isn't on point then it can effect your performance. I wouldn't blame any one thing on last night's game. That would be a cop out. What we saw though was the vast majority of players looking lethargic, fumbly and tired.
We have no doubt been lucky to have a few easier opponents to start the year, but to my eye it was very clear we weren't our usual selves and it's hard to look past the challenges regarding scheduling, training and recovery as the reason why.
If we're playing like this in September, absolutely be concerned. This team and the high performance staff plan for the opposite - as we saw last year.
Happy to give Fort a shot at it myself . Day was better last night but a liability at times. Fort's obviously a much better ruckman and debatable whether he's a better forward. The thing I find most problematic with Day is his lack of athleticism. If the ball isn't in the forward 50 then he is nonexistent. At least with Fort in the ruck and Big O ruck forward Oscar will run up the wing and offer an option out.
When we are under so much pressure that our kicking game isn't working currently we've got nothing, unless Hipwood runs himself into the ground. I hope we keep working on our hand ball game during high pressure phases but let's face it it's our Achillies heal in many ways.
Agree, especially as Fort was BOG in the VFL. Be good to reward form.Happy to give Fort a shot at it myself . Day was better last night but a liability at times. Fort's obviously a much better ruckman and debatable whether he's a better forward.
But not expecting any change until it becomes very obvious , if it does.
His role is no different to any other year...he's just struggling with form.Charlies never been the same since Linc went down, forced into a roll he's just not suited to.
Shouldn't have been a free kick either but then that was the night. Umpires we're almost as poor as the Lions. Some of their decisions were baffling, some infuriating. The ump paid a free kick to McStay and he kicked a goal while everyone was looking at the melee.

Bailey let us down by missing that easy shot on goal, for me that was when the game took a turn.Such a strange collective down game for this team. Don't think I've ever seen all of Neale, Ashcroft and Hugh be so ineffective in a game at the same time. Everyone bar Bailey and Answerth were very poor.
We lost momentum in the 2nd quarter when Day took the centre clearances and they just killed us . Obviously that's not solely on Day and Oscar wasn't going all that hot either , but the difference was fairly evident. Day wasn't the worst of our problems last night just the same.Unless I am mistaken, Big O has always worked better in the past with Joey pinch hitting, versus sharing with Fort. For whatever reason.
In saying that, Fort coming in shouldn't be to take 50/50 ruck duties but to play the forward role that sometimes pinch hits in the ruck (Big positive there). Definitely worth a try at some point.
Cam Rayner’s stats warrant examination. In the third quarter he had 81% time on ground and did not collect a single disposal or lay a singe tackle. In the second quarter he had one disposal, which came from a good mark and he kicked a goal. We need much more out of him. The same goes for Hipwood, who had one disposal in the second quarter and two in the third.
Both Hipwood and Rayner have the ability to break games open and do extraordinary things, but I would love to swap some of that mercurial brilliance for less spectacular, but much more needed, consistency.
It would be great to be able to rely on them.
Just on the Logan push Damo is at it begging for a suspension.
I'd be interested in others thoughts but Logan barely touched Moore who propelled himself into the contest maybe looking for a free. I didn't detect any push. He just had his hand there.
Is that one eyed ? Watched it a few times and that's my conclusion.
Cam's a burst player and it's just the nature of how he plays that he can't consistently do the mercurial and sometimes not at all during games . He's showing some improved features the last year or two but it really wasn't his go last night with the forward entries well down and after half time barely at all. He tried to throw his weight around when he got near it but they just sucked it up.Cam Rayner’s stats warrant examination. I don’t know why Fort is not in the side .
