It's really quite simple, our defence has been outstanding for 2 years, and our forward line the opposite. That allows us to keep good sides down but allow weaker sides to have a chance. I struggle to see how we're going to score more than 60 against you guys, but we'll keep you to less than 80 at the same time.
Fat rat's clacker's chance of that.

The last 13 times we played your guys we've scored: 85,82,125,112,140,91,71,141,113,98,89,68,and 113.

Average: 102 and a bit points.

The Subi games in that sequence we scored: 125,140,91,141,98,89,68 and 113.

Average: 108 and you can keep the change.

More centuries that Bradman.

I'm sure games 10 years ago are very relevant, we might have half a dozen players left between us from then.

Last year we managed 113 without Fyfe, Barlow or Mundy after half time.. think the bombers had a few out too, Goddard after about 10 mins and Chappy(?)

The head-to-head stats while Ross was at St Kilda can be written off because it's a different group of players. Apart from that I think we're left with a sample size of one, that game where Mayne hit the post in the dying seconds. Hardly statistically convincing.

3 games, 1 at St. Kilda and 2 at Fremantle.

Did you see the match where we kept a side that averaged 122 points per game last season to their first score under 80 since 2013?
Yeah, I also saw port beat them, the Bulldogs almost beat them. I also saw them lose almost every statistical category on the weekend.

Oh and when you played them, Mitchell was a late out and they lost Burgoyne, Frawley and Suckling during the match.

Even then you only just beat them, and were kept to under 80 yourself.

Fair play you lost Goddard and Merritt but it was in the 4th quarter.

Burgoyne and Suckling played the full match, so keep making excuses. Keeping them to under 80 has nothing to do with their full back. Stop whinging and look at the facts: Essendon have a bloody good defender and you can make all the excuses you like but the only thing that matters is that when the final siren sounded, the team in red and black were ahead.

They're listed as injuries in the official match report. If they played, my bad.

It's not excuses, I'm merely pointing out that the Hawks are not displaying anywhere near the form they have in the last couple of years. They've probably not played a great game all year. Sure, take credit for beating them, you did. But, the fact remains they've been ordinary by their standards this year.

You only just hung on against the Saints this week, whilst they lost to Carlton in round 4.

I've only seen 2.5 Hawthorn games this season, but they were pretty awesome for most of what I saw. As I said earlier in the thread, our really good defence keeps us in games against top sides, and our shithouse attack keeps lesser sides in the game.
A sample size of 2 is just so much more convincing.
Still, having a 100% record against him is pretty good.

This is a thread discussing the possible ins and outs for the game.

No more ASADA/Hird/drug cheats etc bullshit in this thread. First and last warning for Freo and Essendon fans.

eth-dog, if you can't show any restraint please try and avoid this thread altogether, we have a separate preview thread or better yet the banter thread on the Bombers board where the last 15 posts in this thread would be more appropriate. Or even better still the ASADA sub-board.

Cheers.

Freo were offering their second rounder weren't they? That turned out to be Alex Pearce.

"Skipper Matthew Pavlich and forward Michael Walters both trained unhindered on Wednesday, in a good sign they’ll be available for selection.

The pair, who are recovering from concussions, will still need to pass a test to be available for selection for Saturday night’s game against Essendon at Domain Stadium."

Positive news from the Freo training reports.

Why Duffy, his Peel form has been in the most underwhelming.

Only going on comments by Ross. As you know he is a fan of Duffy.
The other thing I am mindful of is the Peel games are not really a great guide to how the players are performing. If their training track form impresses Ross, I think that would hold as much weight as how they are going in the WAFL.
We know he can play. We look back at the Geelong game last year and Max was impressive. It is that X factor he could bedazzle Essendon with.

For me ? It is the perfect game to play him.

I'm a Duffy fan as well. Not sure if he's ready but he's been OK at Peel. Against Claremont the week before he had 20 D 5 I50s and 3 Goals. Not shabby for a high half forward. He was ordinary against the Swannies but he had plenty of company, including Croz.

Thanks for the measured response.
I also miss Mzungu and think he will be a worthwhile addition to the team.
But I don't agree that Tendai could play any role better than De Boer. De Boer had a few clumsy tackles on the weekend, but this is unusual: 5 frees against yesterday, and 3 against for the four rounds before. He has made 28 tackles this season so far, only less than Mundy (31) and Mayne (29). This is in 23 quarters rather than 30.

Mzungu averaged 3.1 tackles a game last year. Obviously he is a better kick, and a better runner than de Boer, but that may not be the role Lyon wants for him. De Boer is a harder player and provides a more physical presence than Mzungu (although Le Cras might not agree).

Bottom line, I look forward to seeing Tendai tearing it up on the wing. It will happen. But I the meantime Matty de Boer has until round 5 performed well. We will see if his poor tackling in the latest round will lead to him being dropped.
