Last game:

Gold Coast: The Suns fell to their second straight loss against Sydney, going down by 32 points in a game where they couldn't peg back Sydney's hot start to the game. Matt Rowell was prolific in the middle with 32 disposals and 8 clearances whilst Ben Long kicked 3 goals up front.

Essendon: Essendon snapped a 17 game losing streak, defeating Melbourne by 45 points after an 11 goal to 2 second half. Archie Roberts was excellent again with 42 disposals and a goal off half back, whilst Essendon's forward line shared the spoils around with Caddy, Duursma, May, Edwards and Kako kicking 2 apiece.

Gold Coast defence vs Essendon forward line

Essendon's forward line has been the strongest line for them this season, kicking a goal 25.78% of the time and scoring 48.89% of the time it enters their 50, 7th and 6th in those stats respectively. Gold Coast have conceded a goal 23.98% of the time it enteres their defensive 50, and a score 46.75% of the time, 8th and 11th in the league as it stands.

Sam Collins has been a premier key defender in the competition for the Suns the past few years and likely takes yong Bomber star Nate Caddy, whilst Charlie Ballard and Mac Andrew play on Tom Edwards and Archer May respectively, and John Noble to take dangerous small Isaac Kako.

Midfield/rucks battle

This is a battle of the two worst clearance sides in the comp, Essendon -9 in clearance difference and Gold Coast -5.6, whilst Essendon are stronger in the contested possession difference, 11th to the Suns 13th, though both sides lose the contested possessions more often than they win.

Andrew McGrath made a big difference in the midfield last week, limiting Melbourne's ability to leave stoppage quickly and will likely go on Matt Rowell in a run with role, whilst letting Darcy Parish who was back to his best last week go head to head with Noah Anderson, and the Suns normally not electing to tag but may consider running someone on Merrett. On the outside, Kyle Langford has had a return to form on the wing, likely to go head to head with Lachlan Weller, and Xavier Duursma on Sam Clohesy. Rucks wise, Peter Wright and Lachlan Blakiston have found their groove together, whilst Ned Moyle and Mac Andrew are likely to match up well against them respectively.

Gold Coast forward line vs Essendon defence

Gold Coast's 27.64% goals per inside 50 ratio is the second best in the league, despite being 9th in scores per inside 50 at 46.42%. On the flipside Essendon concede a goal 27.11% of the time it enters defensive 50, and a score 49.65% of the time, 14th and 13th in those areas respectively.

It'll likely be Ben vs Ben, McKay on King as the main match up, with Zach Reid and Jordan Ridley likely to take the younger combination of Ethan Read and Jed Walter in defence as well, and Archie Roberts the most likely match up for dangerous small Ben Long inside 50 for the Suns.

Key stat

Gold Coast: Clearances. They have one of the best midfields in the comp, how they're 17th for clearance difference is astounding

Essendon: Forward 50 efficiency. The Dons forward line has functioned well for the most part this season, need to get on top of this Gold Coast defence to win.

Tip

I'd love to win this but I can't see us getting close, Suns by 43.

Also, please note that this is likely the last preview I can do for a while, as we have a run of Saturday games whilst I'll likely be doing stuff at my local club. I'll be back for Dreamtime though.

Huge huge test

I expect us to get pumped really, if we dont then gee i start holding alot of promise for this group

Need to drop a tall defender (Blaki, Reid, Mckay or Ridley) and it aint the last 3

Hard to make a change but Mcgrath back and lose a tall

Out: Blakiston
In: DSharp (body onto Trac when at stoppage from HFF or starting onball) IF NOT READY - Guelfi

Should suit them (Suns) at carrara

Thought dees were really off today if im being honest, but we looked good aswell, sometimes hard to tell if more oppo or more us

One thing i know, theyll be breathing fire

3 talls - 3 talls
Lombard - Mcgrath
Ben Long - Prior
Touk - A.Roberts

Rowell - Caldwell
Noah - Durham (Easy to shut out and suns struggle when he is)

CBAS
Caldwell 80% (Rowell is in alot)
Parish 70% (Same as today)
Tsatas 60%
SDurham 40%
DSharp 20%
Zerrett 30% (Majority fwd)

Zerrett to apply the pressure with Kako in the forward line and get up and back

Thats what i expect anyway

Great to see a turn around in form from a few senior guys like Parish/Langford/2MP against the Dees - they need to continue with this if we are to be any chance against GCoast on their home turf…Ridley back helps our defence immensely, and suddenly with we have a few tall options up forward in Edwards whose been a revelation + May/Caddy.
Dont think we will see any changes - maybe Sharp comes in but not sure for who..?? Hope we line up like this;-

Reid McKay McGrath
Roberts Ridley Farrow
Langford Tsatas Duursma
Durham Caddy Kako
Edwards May Gresham

2MP Parish Merrett

Bench: Cadlwell Robey ADW Prior Blaki

Blakiston still played a 25% slice of second ruck. He actually did well in a 10 or so minute stretch in the last quarter. Wright cannot ruck the game himself, and I would rather not be pulling May out of the forward line to fill in 25 - 30% ruck time. We may not need Blakiston back as much, but we still need a ruck rotation. The thing with Blakiston is he can still provide a defensive rotation which he did on Saturday. Ridley and Reid getting around 80% time. He is basically doing what a forward / second ruck does only at the opposite end.
When Bryan is ready then they will have to have a look at the role and Blakiston makes way and they go back to Wright being second ruck / forward but even that may be problematical if Wright starts spending too much time forward.

I hope they take the confidence from the Melb win into this game (and beyond) and not undo the learnings. Don’t change a winning formula I say but I like what Brad is doing with the creativity of the magnets in selections and quickly responds if things are not working on game day.

The young group are the motivation for the seniors.

It is hard to win up there but have a red hot go.

Red shorts again?

No changes for me. Let Bryan have one more game in the VFL next weekend to build the tank and then make the swap the week afterwards with Blakistan.

Prior listed as an injury in the AFL app? I don't remember seeing him go down though? Anyone know what that was about? Caldwell only went off with some blood so should be fine.

For the moment, no changes.

I hope we compete and stick close enough to them.

Actually heading up there for the game, golf in the morning and hopefully plenty of beers in the lunchtime sun.
Royal Pines?

Our reserves (18th) play GCoast reserves (22nd) at 9am the same day
Hopefully we can get the win and it will be good to see the likes of Kondo/Gerreyn/Unwin/Nguyen/HAS & Bryan run around

One change I’d like to see is Nguyen in for Gresh - get him to come in and follow Noble around. But after a big win, we probably don’t see any changes

Appreciate your work so far this season so far Eth. You'll be missed.

No change. First win in nearly 12 months and it was the best we've looked all year, stick with it.

Really? Gresh has been good for the last two weeks. Wouldn't change.

I couldn't figure out Caldwell's role vs Melbourne. Did he have a run with role? Just didn't feel he impacted the game but maybe I just didn't notice him. Wonder if he's competing with Sharp for a spot this week.
