I was at the game and one pro I noticed was after the siren.

The players actually seemed to be hurt by this loss. Quite a few slumped to the ground, Shuey was was face down on the ground with his head in his hands for a long time. I haven't actually witnessed this reaction from this group of players after a loss before. Normally they just shrug their shoulders and walk off like nothing happened.

Maybe it was a kick in the guts, and hopefully they really hurt from it.

I went to the game with my other half last night - it is fair to say I embraced the Eagles against the scum.

Pros:
Bennell - wow the kid can really defend. On numerous occasions was outsized and stood up.
McGovern - didn't look out of place at all.
Rosa - what a mark!

Cons:
Tackling - a complete lack of pressure on the ball carrier was telling in the last quarter.
McGovern sub - why was he subbed? Injured? Buggered? Team balance? I thought Lycett was a certainty to be subbed to inject some more run and pressure in the forward line.
Carlton winning - god I hate Carlton...

McGovern was subbed because he returned to pre-season training substantially overweight and subsequently can't run out a game.

Someone else on here mentioned Gov was cramping pretty badly and that was the reason he was subbed. Don't know for sure.

Positives:
Rosas mark-courage that should be shown by every player the entire game
Bennell
Yeo
Shep
McGovern good start in his first game
Natanui slowly getting there

Negatives
Not Kicking Goals we should have
Dropping Marks contested and uncontested
Not kicking to our players just kicking the ball to whoever sometimes directly to a blue
Not enough defensive pressure from quite a few players esp in last qtr when Murphy and Buckley were free to win the game

I thought we played quite well until those last 8 minutes.

Pros:
McGovern- Outstanding first game. Competed well and didn't look overwhelmed at all.
Sheppard- Showed great dash and was defensively solid.
Yeo- Defensively solid, great overhead, good agression. Showed some great dash and kicked an awesome goal. I want to see him spend a lot more minutes in the midfield.
Bennell quite good again
Rosa- Good game and great courage from Rosa getting that mark on the wing.

Cons:
Who actually thought Selwood would kick that goal? I'm surprised he even managed to hit the post.
Wellingham was shit again.
Priddis.
"Supporters" questioning Simpson's tenure this early on need to seriously get their heads checked.[/quote
I agree with Simpson questioning, I think he will get this club a premiership sooner than ppl think and he just needs the boys to adapt to his game plan

I would love to see for once a beautiful passage from defence to the forward where one of our players kicks a beautiful pass to a leading forwar, who then slams through a goal. I am dying to see this and haven't all year.

A little off topic, I watched port vs Adelaide couple weeks back, matt White was the sub and I think he kicked his third goal in the last quarter. As soon as he kicked it, he made reference to the team he plays for by pulling on the part of the guernsey that has the logo on it. To me it showedthat he loves playing for his club and bleeds for it. Where are our bleeders? Whose is proud to play for our club. I couldn't see anyone last night.

Both opinions about JK are correct.

Yes, the delivery to him was average. But so was the mans game itself. He lost any one on one battle, dropped marks that he normally would have taken and was unclean with his hands the entire game.
We are questioning if somethings happened to him b personally cause he's stopped the run up n like you said dropping marks? It's so unlike him... hope he's still happy at west coast

Pros: Sheppards kicking was awesome last night!
Bennell & Yeo good again.
McGovern was great too.

Cons: too many to mention....

Ps: our so called best mids are still shit. Shuey could of won that game twice for us last night but can't kick a goal on the run, and then instead of hitting up a forward target with under a minute to go he has a shot from the boundary line and misses. That's not a grade thinking. Selwood is absolute pants. Can't kick a goal, can't hit a target and can't tag. Priddus sits on the wing coz he can't get to the back line in time, gets free and easy ball by himself and still can't hit a target. These are our premier ball winners, and after 150+ games from them should be a heck of a lot better than they are. No more excuses. Full rebuild required.

Pps:piss of the three rucks and get Tunners, Colledge, Carter etc into the side. Release Yeo into the guts and get Priddis & Selwood out of the side. Midfield rotations should be Shuey, Yeo, Masten, Hutch, Colledge, Sheed, Wellers, Cripps, Tunbridge, Rosa & Gaff with Darling in for short bursts only. Rotate them through the half fwd, fwd pocket and bench. Carter, Bennell, Shep can cover half back. Gaff & Rosa mainly wings. Play the two rucks that are in the best form currently, not in two months time.

Didn't rate Yeo that highly at all, can't kick worth a shit, got a nice goal but was a bit lost when he found himself through the middle of the ground and seemed to be a bit of a leak, looks a lot better when he's in the D50, people overrating because of his runs. Schoey is actually better and put in some great spoils.

Sheppard was great, good confidence, teammates using him as the clearing kick and must admit his kicking looks sharp as hell. Actually thought Scooter was cleaner than he's been all year with the ball, Priddis greatly improved, particularly the first half basically kept our midfield in it, Rosa and Shuey were gallant and to be honest nobody spudded it up badly, we played alright.

Can't believe the gameday thread, I have never seen a worse umpiring display, ever. We should have won that game but ****** up our chances, Scooter unlucky, Shuey made some horrible decisions late and JK missing from there is in all honesty pathetic, that should be kickable, not that Darlings kick in was anything but good, players really are shit at soccering.

Actually disregarding my 'no spuds' comment, Wellingham ... what happened?

Thought Priddis did well to spread and release on the wing, reminded me of Cousins or Braun in the olden days at Subi (albeit a different ground obviously) and he actually hit targets, he sold dummy's and ran out of packs well and handballed when required.

Unlucky for the eagles really, we're a better team than Carlton, there's no denying it, they really are spuds and wont feature this year at all, we just didn't try hard enough and lacked polish, we dominated across the ground but basic misses and things like Nicnat being shit, Lycett showing good signs but dropping basic marks, Kennedy getting raped for no reward just turned the tide and the front runners got momentum up and started to run.

Priddis is a hole defensively, his offence was fine even his kicking, thought scooter kicked well yet everyone looks past Yeo's deficiencies because he can run? He looked un intelligent last night and unless he's directly manning someone up he still has a LOT to learn. Shuey was selfish, can't believe he tried to pass 10m to selwood in the last when if any, that was the one he would most likely have slotted, poor selwood really, did well to hit the post, definitely should have centred with his last shot from the boundary as well but I'd bet my house JK was in the squre flat footed as well.

That is complete rubbish. If everyone expected that we'd have players running around kissing their badges to check off the "make perception we bleed for our jumper" box.

I remember once upon a time in the bad old Des Headland days of Fremantle, their players would be hamming it up every time they kicked a goal trying to trick people that they were committed.

Kicking 3 goals matters. Kissing the badge isn't worth a squirt of piss. Actions, not perceptions.

Pro:
Shep
Yeo
Bennell (maybe my new favourite player)
Rosa (that mark :))
Gaff, McGovern, Shred. Not huge impact but decent efforts.

Cons:
Wellingham was crap
Kennedy is no where near the player he was last season.
Scooter....sigh
And probably many more but most have already been mentioned.

Pros:
Darling - Such a smart & creative footballer! Every time he goes near the ball you can see him trying to create something. From little taps by hand to really thinking about where/how he kicks. Very solid disposal too, took some high risk options by foot and hit his target each time. Plenty of man-love for the guy.

Bennell - Goes 100% at every contest. Loved his spoil on Warnock even though Warnock got the ball on a hard lead, laces out.

Brown, Sheppard, Yeo, Rosa, Shuey, Masten all did great.

Cons:
Gaff - Has no urgency at the contest.
Cox - Needs to be used in that link-role he played when at the peak of his powers. As mentioned, looks unsuited to resting in the forward line.
Cripps - I don't like him. Ball hog.
Hutchings -Not up to AFL standard.

Pros:
  • Rosa was pretty good. That mark was beyond inspirational
  • I thought Shuey looked good. Made a few dumb decisions towards the end but got plenty of the ball and kicked goals which is something we don't get from our other mids. Looks like hes threatening to take the next step
  • Shep, Bennell and Yeo were all brilliant. Loved Yeo's goal
  • Gov's first game was more than solid. Will replace glass at years end
  • Sheed impacted coming on as the sub and got the only goal for the quarter
Cons:
  • Priddis' disposal by foot
  • Selwood, didn't have much of a positive impact on the game despite getting plenty of the ball.
  • Wellingham looking disinterested and poor by foot
  • Talls didn't work. Again
  • Kennedy out of form although getting no help from the delivery into the forward 50 by our mids
  • Darling wasn't great by his standards
  • Losing from being four goals up!!!!!

If we beat the poofs next week this game will be forgotten. I would like nothing more. Reckon we'll get pantsed though.

what's happened to our tackling? we were semi decent at it last year. scooter is averaging 4.3 (down from 7.6) a game this season.

when fairies like Gibbs and Murphy get 11 each, and our whole team only gets 46.....that sucks.

This is a huge concern given how limited we are in other ways (ie: footskills). There seemed to be a few times last night where Selwood couldn't stick his tackles. So frustrating watching our mids get muscled off the ball.

People writing that priddis spread was good... I was at the game. The only reason a few times in the 3rd when he found himself at wing and half forward in space was because he was too slow running back to defence to help out, once Carlton turned it over he appeared to be in a good position as his opponent had ran forward to help out. When your at the game you realise how bad this situation is.

Pros: The past few weeks I've been weaning myself off anti-depressants and since last night's result I haven't put a knife to my throat (or anybody else's).

Cons: In the first ten minutes we were witches hats; in the last ten minutes we reverted to our usual ineptitude in allowing the other side to dictate terms and by giving the maggots every excuse possible to award dodgy free kicks. And in the rest of the game, where we outscored them by eight goals, nothing was easy. We did everything the hard way.

That's a great point that is often overlooked; Priddis is an asset when he has the ball and can feed it out, but on the rebound/against quick teams he is a liability with the defensive side of the game. Carlton were way too mobile through the middle for us late. The talls didn't help...
