Fremantle v. Melbourne
Saturday, May 05, 2001 - Subiaco 5:40 PM (7:40 PM AEST)
** Dockers No Match for Demons **
Fremantle: 4.7 7.12 9.17 9.20 74
Melbourne: 2.3 5.7 10.7 18.11 119
Best: Melbourne: Yze, McDonald, Ward, Woeowdin, Rigoni, Febey.
Fremantle: Bell, Cook, Hasleby, Cook.
Goals: Melbourne: Green 4, Robertson 3, Beams 2, Neitz 2, Ward 2,
McDonald, Rigoni, Schwarz, Woewodin, Yze.
Fremantle: Modra 3, Bandy 2, Cook, Dodd, Koops, Shipp.
Injuries: Melbourne: Leoncelli ( shoulder)
Fremantle: Modra (ankle), Hasleby (hamstring).
Fremantle let an undermanned Melbourne ease away to a comfortable
victory again tonight. Despite Melbourne missing two key play
makers in Jeff White and Jeff Farmer, they were still unable to
capitalise on their many chances in front of goal, and as they
say poor kicking is poor football and in the end it came back to
haunt the dockers. The Dockers failed to take advantage of their
complete dominence of the centre thru the likes of Bell, Cook and
Hasleby, yet were unable to hurt Melbourne where it counted on
the scoreboard.
Even though they led at the first 3 changes, the demons were able
to remain in touch with the dockers and then kick the last 8
goals to come away with a resounding 45 point victory. After
half time Fremantle only managed a paltry 2 goals to Melbournes
13.
So dominent were Fremantle thru the centre that they actually
doubled melbourne's centre square clearances. It seems a matter
of so close yet so far away for the winless dockers throughout
the season so far, who remain the only winless team in the
competition. They continue to have problems running out games
which must be attributed to a lack of fitness as has occurred for
the second week in a row.
Brad Green was the dominent forward on the ground kicking 4 goals
with Russell Robertson continuing his fine form with another 3
goals, including one miraculous snap over his shoulder which you
are bound to see on goal of the week.
The Dockers major concern seems to remain their lack of potency
up forward. Now with Tony Modra injured, it seems their forward
woes are only going to worsen. Still a lot can happen in a week
in football and as long as they keep knocking on the door then a
win would seem just around the corner.
For Melbourne the signs have been very encouraging over the last
couple of weeks, even though they have not played their best
football and have been in losing positions inside the last
quarter, they have been able to pull out the victories when
needed. Always a sign of a good team.

Port Adelaide v. Western Bulldogs
Saturday, May 05, 2001 - Football Park 7:10 PM (7:40 PM AEST)
PORT FIGHT OFF DOGS!
On Saturday night Port Adelaide fought off a determined Bulldogs
side reeling from a bad week of suspensions and injury. With the
likes of Darcy, Curley (suspended), Croft, Romero and Dimattina
(injured) it was always going to be a struggle for the Bulldogs
but the younger players did show a fair bit of determination by
staying with Port for a half.
Half way through the first term Port Adelaide had piled on five
goals to the Bulldogs one and the Bulldogs supporters must have
been thinking it was going to be a long night, however the back
to the wall Bulldogs had other ideas. The Bulldogs were able to
score the next three goals before quarter time to only trail Port
by seven points at half time. Apart from the early goals to Port
in the first term the only other highlight was the saving mark in
defence by Gavin Wanganeen which resulted in him having one major
wedgy, much like something you would see of those life savers on
the Gold Coast.
The second quarter was much the same as the first, tight hard
ugly football with no team able to take ascendancy of the game.
To this stage Port were not able to play their exciting brand of
football, which has been noted for all year. The Bulldogs
tactics were working, with nothing to lose they had to play the
game as hard and tight as possible, negative maybe but it's a
hell of a lot better than being blown out of the water. Its
something that Port is going to have to learn how to beat because
I am sure tactics will be used like these again by far better
teams.
Port Adelaide is known for their big third terms (scored more
than any other team in the AFL in third quarters) and this game
was to be no exception despite the closeness of the first half.
Port piled on six goals to the Bulldogs two and stretched their
lead to thirty-four points after only leading by 10 points at
half time.
As expected the Bulldogs came back hard after a poor third
quarter, making sure Port didn't hurt them too hard on the
scoreboard. The Bulldogs were outscored like all other quarters
but like the first two quarters did make a fist of the game that
was remaining. Port finished with five goals for the quarter to
the Bulldogs four, with Port eventually running out winners by 43
points and putting them to the top of the ladder if only for a
day.
It must be noted that Harrison played a fantastic game against
leading goal kicker Stuart Dew. Dew was well shut down and he
would have been disappointed by his twelve possessions, all
mostly under pressure and not being able to register any goals.
Port may have been stung a little by Dew's performance but as
most sides soon find out it is too hard to cover all of Port's
little goal kicking players. Three goals each to Burgoyne,
Cockatoo-Collins and James really make's it hard for any
oppositions defence. The Bulldogs best forward for this year,
the mercurial Paul Hudson was kept quiet by Wanganeen, however
the Bulldogs don't enough class players who can persistently
score goals.
Port Adelaide 5.2 9.3 15.5 20.9 (129)
Western Bulldogs 4.1 7.5 9.7 13.8 (86)
Best - Port: Primus, Francou, Stevens, Wilson, Francis, Cockatoo-
Collins, Montgomery, Cornes, Wakelin; Bulldogs: Johnson,
Harrison, Grant, Smith, West, Contessa;
Goals - Port: Cornes, Cockatoo-Collins, James, Burgoyne 3, Wilson
2, Guerra, Stevens, Wanganeen, Tredrea, Francis, Carr 1;
Bulldogs: Johnson 3, West 2, Eagleton, Harrison, Grant, Garlick,
Smith, Hudson, Bartlett, Cox 1;

Collingwood v. Carlton
Sunday, May 06, 2001 - MCG 2:10 PM
Sunday the 6th may 2001 will go down into the records as another
round of AFL football but for the Collingwood football club it
will go down as the day the club matured and came of age. The
loser syndrome at Collingwood is gone. It can now proudly join
the other clubs whose vision carries it beyond the last home and
away game in august.
To surrender a lead in front of a massive crowd at the MCG late
in the last quarter is unforgivable but to then regroup and
regain the lead and win is simply heroic. And something that can
only be acclompished by sides with determination and poise.
Collingwood were in control of this game they were the side that
wanted the ball and at times outclassed the opposition with
maturity far beyond the years of being the youngest team in the
competition.
Rocca was brilliant his match winning 6 goals will wipe the
smiles of all those who said the guy cant play football.Wakelin
in the backline is fast developing 'General' status he is calm
and direct and has bought stability to the Collingwood backline.
This young Collingwood team just dont know how to give up,the
carlton comeback late into the last quarter when it regained the
lead would of killed a lot of other sides but not this very
skilled and fast Collingwood it simply got on with the match its
hard to give best players in a game such as this but one has got
to admire the comeback of A Rocca the guts of T Lockyer and the
class of N Buckley.
It has been a long, long time since this club received the
standing ovation as it did yesterday when the siren sounded to
end the battle and it added another exciting chapter to the
greatest rivals ever in the VFL/AFL competition.
Well done to the Collingwood football club.
