Same goes for Alger - he moves really well. Love to see him get a crack very soon. MRJ and to a lesser extent Steely the most obvious ones who need to perform to keep their spots.
Yeah, since people love that shocking nickname Kmac2, McAuliffe in for McIntosh.
There's something to really like about Judson Clarke. Obviously still building his fitness, but just seems to have time and space when he gets the ball.
I like Kaleb Smith but can see Judson going past him if they earmark him for a HBF role.

McCarthy did his mid season hopes no harm. He is the line breaking half back that I wish Smith was going to become. I think he would be even better on the MCG with more space. Has very good pace and always composed with a nice long kick. Could play wing as well.

Definitely showed the strongest traits last night as to why he should be in the firsts IMO. He’s a powerhouse with a really penetrating left foot. Thought sonsie did some good stuff too in the midfield but Kano just plays more damaging and is a fierce tackler. Really Hoping he gets the call up soon

Awful. Felt like him and mraz had about 400 uncontested marks down the line with OHB or Mate 3m behind them trying to get to the fall of the ball.

He definitely gets picked. Just not by us, 25 and is a tall HBF, we have Trainor, Brown, Vlastuin and Broad there already and slid Banks back there vs Dees for a bit. I also think watching vfl they’ll be moving Juddy and Trezise between that spot and wing. And honestly think we should start Smillie across HBF as he gets up to speed with AFL football.
Don’t need a HBF, we need a ruck, classy small forward and mids.

Totally agree! Grey on the wing! or Fwd / Ruck is fine by me.. then swing into defense if needed (someone getting bags kicked on them).

I haven’t witnessed anything that suggests he is. But others may. I doubt being on the outer would impact his AFL credentials though.
My observation with Sonsie is that he’s handy with the ball in hand, but without the ball he leaves a lot to be desired. Would love to see a hard tackle, more unrewarded running, blocks for teammates, directions / voice to team mates etc etc. He just doesn’t appear to be a team mate you would want to suit up with, and he’s running out of time to turn it around.
I’d say half back is his final chance, trouble is Banks and Brown appear to have improved in those same areas that are weaknesses for Sonsie so have gone past him. Not really mad about that either tbh. Both are more versatile and at a minimum as good with the ball.
Sonsie reminds me of Billing’s… good junior footballer that never lived up to junior hype. It’s why scouts pay so much attention to combine results these days. If you have an athletic profile like Sonsie, you need to be a competitive animal to make up for your shortcomings. Think Ward / Sloane. They have that fight that can’t be taught.

Yep, I’m a Kaleb Smith fan too. He’s the Dan Rioli replacement for mine yet we leave him in the VFL or drop him after a single game in the ones. Needs to be given the role for an extended period of time and see if he can perform in the role
I think he does fill a need, we don't have a rebounding half back, and McCarthy has real dash.
As good as Brown and Trainor are coming along, they are not the line breakers. Besides one will replace Broad who will be 33 next year and probably not better than either right now by much.
McCarthy looks also well suited to the wing, and also goes through the midfield occasionally. I think he could have a higher ceiling than Banks or Trezise as he has way more pace than either, is just as good a kick and we badly lack for speed across the back/centre line (beside Ralphsmith).

Looked to be playing wing. Saw a bit of the ball. Looks rusty but had some classy moments. Moving well.
Reckon we'll see him in the seniors pretty soon.

If he plays seniors this year, that would be a massive bonus IMO.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see him shortly after the bye. Give him another 5 or 6 weeks to get the fitness up.
