Preview Round 7, 2020 vs Carlton @ GABBA

Why did your team fly back to Adelaide instead of staying in QLD for our game?
This may come as a surprise but both SA clubs had been in a hub in QLD for weeks so were allowed to go home to a state that has been COVID-19 free for weeks.

Has the club got anyone on Fog watch? Last couple of days suggest a 6.30am flight would have been delayed at least a couple of hours or more.

Given a 2 hours and 20 minute flight to Coolangatta, the scheduled game starts 12.35pm ACT / 1.05pm I doubt the players would have any more than 30 minutes from getting off the bus to scheduled bounce down.

If that happens would the AFL, delay the game by an hour or two and upset the broadcasters?? Other 2 Sunday games are in Sydney and Perth so they wont swap them around? Or fork out some accomodation $$$, let the sides stay overnight and play on Monday night?

BOM saying that the rain forecast for the weekend will mean there won't be any fog on Sunday.

We've had some horrific close losses against this mob in recent years but we've also got a hold of them a few times and taken them to the cleaners. Hopefully it is the latter.

And hopefully we play like we did in the last quarter against the Giants for a full match. That last quarter was as impressive as I've seen us play for a very long time. I don't care how good Carlton are going if we play like that for 4 quarters they're toast. If we play like what we did against Brisbane though, we could be in for a very tough game.

i'm hoping it is just Brisbane that has got our measure for whatever reason and not the Gabba ground itself?

In the Hinkley era. Bold is the kill Robbie Gray game, where in 2015 we were the only side of the top 10 that lost to bottom 2 sides Brisbane and Carlton.

We will make hard work of the game especially if Cripps plays and beats our mids.

I don't have stats to back this view up, but I think we do much better against teams that are more methodical about moving the ball around. Adelaide this year are very slow, West Coast haven't been good, and the Giants are the worst in the league I believe at inside 50s. Where I think we struggle is against teams that move the ball quickly, and from what I've seen of Carlton they like to take the game on. Similar to Brisbane. We generate most of our scores from turnover and repeat inside 50s. That requires being able to set up defensively and slow opposition ball movement which is both suited to our gamestyle and when we're on a consequence of it. See last week how GWS were unable to get into the corridor. Quick ball movement exposes our short backline so the mids have to be on defensively to stop the quick ball coming in and forcing the opposition down the wings. So as always it will come down to our forwards being able to put enough pressure on to force Carlton wide coming out of the backline, and the mids to stop the inside kick to the corridor because that is how they want to play.

That 2015 game was such a farce. That team in general was just not tough. Boak got bashed in round 2 against Sydney and then Robbie got thumped by Gibbs and we did bugger all about it.

To this day I still don't know how we went from the Kamikaze style of 2014, to a slow and methodical approach in 2015. They were polar opposite styles of each other, and dare I say saying that the change was more to do with figuring out the 2 ruck combo in Lobbe and Ryder is way too simplistic.

After Robbie had both arms pinned and was propelled head-first into the turf in a double-motion tackle by Gibbs, our players moved to remonstrate and were told by the controlling umpire to C&D as there was “nothing in it”.

If Jonas did that to Lil Marc Murphy he’d still be haunted by the ghost of Fonzie Gangitano.

2015 opposition teams deliberately turned our games into stoppage games. They knew we would run hard so they had to stop us. They did well at Adelaide Oval, and because we were skinny middle distance runners we didn't get clearances and feed our runners. There are some stats somewhere showing this in 2015, as I know I did them.

I do remember turning them into a stoppage fest. What I was confused about however was that we seemed to have no answer when teams stopped us getting into the corridor. Outside of 3 or 4 games, it certainly felt as if we were getting dictated to in terms of the game style for 2015.

Seems like the club tried to embrace that stoppage, down the line style from 2016 through 2018, but have since tried to establish quicker ball movement to open up the front half from 2019 onwards. Dare I say the game plan as it is currently constructed feels the most "solid" it has been under Hinkley.

Thought it was game over when GWS had momentum and we lined up the bounce with basically all the old guys - Boak, Ebert, Westhoff (ruck), Gray.

Just couldn't shake thinking that going with the same old wouldn't get it done

I seem to recall that we were meant to vs Carlton in our blue and white hoops.Hope they still produce a run of them at some point for us to help fill the clubs coffers in the 150th year (provided they change back the collars: the prison bars were a little off around the collar).

I hope we don't. I have never associated PAFC with blue and white hoops and it will only add ammo for Eddie and the 119 crowd. I think blue and white hoops can just * right off

Hinkley is a fantastic coach and deserves his place as one of the most innovative and exciting coaches over the last decade.
By decade are you referring to 2020-present? Surely not 2010-2019?
