Autopsy Round 7, 2021 vs Brisbane

If he is at least we'll get something for him. The problem with Jacobs wasn't just that he left, it was that he was so ****ing garbage that he tanked his value so badly in two years that we couldn't get a half eaten sandwich for him at the trade table.

Most first round draftees look fantastic on their sizzle reel.

He looked like your classic “big body dominating against kids with zero weapons apart from his advanced size”.

Stop trying to hang our hats on the Richmond game. They have so few games outside Victoria they don’t care too much about them during the Hone & away. Like last year if we somehow get Richmond at home during finals they’ll be a different proposition. We are 0 from 2 away against decent opponents. With vaccinations underway we aren’t somehow getting the GF at AO so we actually will have to win at least one (and given our losses more likely 3) games away against quality opposition. We’ve shown so far this year we are not anywhere near being able to do this.
The capacity is there. We travelled well last year despite having to wake up at like 4am most of the time.
Beaten some quality opponents away from home in recent years too, even our bad seasons.
No doubt we are seeking some more consistency in this area, but we can play well on the road, hopefully, we can work towards this later in the year when it matters.

So apparently we left at 4am yesterday. Which genius though that was a good idea ?
That explains the lethargic display across the board. Also gives credence to why the Lions were heavily backed leading into the contest.

Absolute farcical nonsense that this can occur in professional sports.

Coaches always say the same sh*t. Hinkley is no different in that regard.
Dimma had Mrs Hardwick quotes to throw in for a few years, to mix it up a bit.

We need to be mindful that we are 5-2 with an equal record to what we were last year when we finished top when comparing the corresponding fixtures from last season. So all is not lost.

That being said, we also need to be astutely aware that what we dished up last night was nothing short of unacceptable. I'm glad the Magpies had such a convincing win today because that should put pressure on a few players for spots in the Showdown.

I didn't think we were flat in terms of running - the Telstra Tracker numbers are consistent with what other teams have produced on the Gabba this season. My concern comes from simply not being willing to play to the conditions. The Gabba is notoriously a quick end to end oval, and it is always dewy and slippery at night time. It is a wet weather game at night even in dry conditions if that makes sense. And yet, we always seem to play there at night as if we are trying to play at Marvel stadium on a perfect dry crisp oval. I also think we came in too tall in the forward line in hindsight. Take a guy like Marshall for instance. He was getting in all the right places, but every single time when the game was on the line in the first half, he fumbled, dropped an easy mark, or turned the ball over. Our big men are no where near as clean with the ball as our small brigade, but even then a guy like Motlop for instance has consistently shown he's not a wet weather specialist, neither is Woodcock, and when you're trying to carry so many players, you're left with a pretty insipid performance like the one we saw last night.

The lack of contested ball along with a lack of tackles is somewhat disturbing. It also is extremely uncharacteristic, so it's not something I'm going to say is a worrying trend (because it isn't). But it's something to keep an eye out for in coming weeks and should be an internal focus so it doesn't become a trend going forward.

The league has never been so volatile in terms of performance variance, so dare I say I won't be surprised if we see another one or two of these types of games from us this season either.
Ports have distractions, prison bars and too many big heads in administration, feel sorry for Ken Hinkley because he will be the one to get the chop.

I've had the time and the stomach to watch the first half of the first quarter and we were right in it then, winning the ball well in the middle via Ollie and Drew, but from the very start we seemed to be trying to kick our way out of it with our disposal and I50 entries. Blazing away as though under more pressure than we really were... why do we do this to ourselves at times? Brisbane OTOH seemed to hit almost every target they went for.

There's the Hammer brain fade of course, and maybe a little bit of a backing out of a marking contest from SPP (or he decides he can't get to it?) but no lack of intent that I can see at that point.

When you're doing the work and getting no reward, and the opposition are doing everything right... at some point the pressure builds up mentally... good sides can have a horror quarter or a just plain unproductive or wasteful quarter and still respond. Clearly we didn't, and I haven't yet got the time or the stomach to watch the rest of the debacle.

Blame the suspensions for the SPP contest. I don't blame him. Would have been stupid to go for it.

Don't forget the rolled gold of norf 2019. There have been some absolute rippers under hinky.
One thing that frustrates me with Hinkley is the lack of moves he seems devoid in making. DO SOMETHING JUST F###G DO SOMETHING. and make it early. Commented about the intercept marking with our first 4 entities. Here's a novel idea, perhaps instruct players to lower there eyes instead of bombing LONG. Anyway WHAT the f##k would I know.

giving a spray” seems something i’ll never understand, I’ve always felt there are simply better ways to motivate people. *shrug*
It depends on the person. Some only work after a spray; but others simply disappear after one. A good coach knows his players and uses different approaches to get the best from each of them.

On the other hand, some coaches need to spill out in order to regain their cool. If the team isn’t working, they will burst in flames before toning down. Players should be able to understand that as well.

Finally, there are times that a spray is only a spray. People make mistakes. Nothing that mutual apologies don’t mend.

2017 was peak flat-track bully, we had the second best % that year and didn't even beat a geriatric West Coast in a home EF.
We had lost to them at home earlier that year.

But you are right. We had losses by 84 (WL) and 70 points (ESS). We lost both Showdowns.

However, the strongest evidence is our record. Against the other Top-8 teams, it was 2-7; while v. Bot-10, it was 12-1.

This sort of thing has Malcolm Blight written all over it.

"Ya know what i'd do Gerard if nothing's working? For the second half i'd make the forwards go back and the backs go forward, just change things up completely, shake the tree and see what comes out. It might not work, but by gee the fans would love it..."

Only won 2 flags and coached 5 grand finals, so he's no ken Hinkley I'll admit that.

Ken's plan of do nothing and "trust the system" aka no plan b and chug coke Zero works pretty well
