Autopsy Round 7, 2022: Hawks fail against Dees

Big Maxy used to go to town against our seasoned rucks like Ceglar and Big Boy.

Putting Lynch and Callow up against Max was the equivalent of throwing the Christians to the Lions back in Roman times!

Not much Mitch could do though, we don't really have any other options at the moment.
And Lynch and Callow didn't really do that much worse than Big boy and Cegs from what I saw

We only lost by 10 points not 100!
Yeh we only lost by ten points and the fact that Gawn had 29 possessions, 6 marks, 35 hit outs and 2 goals (those are crazy numbers for a ruck) versus Lynch and Callow who had 14 possessions, 3 marks, 22 hit outs and 0 goals between them was the difference.

Everywhere else across the ground we either broke even or were slightly ahead but let's face it we were obliterated in the ruck.

Free kicks were 14-26 and had as much an influence on the outcome. Gawn had his biggest game for the season against us and they only won by 10.

Fair point.

Free kicks aside Max was the difference on the day (that and some disastrous kicking at goal from our senior players)

If we had have at least halved Max's output we would have won.

It's why we need Reeves next time we play the Dee's, Ned's size alone can make Max honest.

Our injuries meant that Max Gawn - best ruckman to play the game in a long time - was competing against two guys with a combined 7 games experience.

That's the game right there.

Imagine how the game would go if we played DGB and Will Day on Hawkins for a whole game as an example. It would be like the Schoenmaker development years. The rest of the ground can even out - but Ruck is a position where the contest is actually cleared out and the nomianted players have to compete. No other position on the ground is as exploitable when you're running with young players.

Agreed. It was the same last week against the Swans poor old Lynch couldn't jump at all in the last quarter and we saw what happened when of all people Ladhams started hitting Hitouts to the advantage of Mills etc. Quick kick into the Swans forward line and 7 goals in 10 minutes or something!

Losing Jackson just meant Gawn played more time on ball, so we kicked it to him more often.

Anyhow, I was really pleased with efforts the boys put in. A bit dirty that we weren't as clean up forward as we could have been. Hopefully Gunners, Wingers and Punky have their kicking boots on this week.

Melbourne v Hawthorn

10 Max Gawn (MELB)
7 Clayton Oliver (MELB)
6 Dylan Moore (HAW)
5 James Sicily (HAW)
2 Christian Petracca (MELB)

re watched the game a good effort from the boys, 5 day break missing arguably our best fwd & def this year. Starting ruck vs big Maxy was just to much.

The Forward entries and kicking for goal, cost us dearly and any real legitimate chance . A 10 min burst from the dee's in the 3rd was enough.
Loved Moore game we need to find a way to get more class up the ground coming into 50, Wingard,Bruest etc.

As hard as it is, we need to take our eye off the W and L as a measure of where we’re at. I reckon Sam Mitchell does. It’s way too early to make a call, the 10-20 gamers need to be 50 gamers.

The Win or Loss should be applied to individual aspects of yesterday’s game. Do that and you’ll find the only thing the Hawks didn’t get out of the game was 4 points. Plenty of little wins, many more than losses.

Melbourne’s use of Gawn and May is a massive weapon to determine Hawthorn’s ball movement. Can’t go down the line, need to do a switch which the Dees are ready for. Not every side has a Gawn. One high 5 too many at Dees training and he could’ve been on the couch watching his team lose yesterday.

Sam is building a very good team. If the BOG for the Hawks each week has a different name, that is also a big win.
Excellent take.

Was pretty proud of the boys in this one, much better performance than against the Swans 5 days earlier. Ultimately lacked the required class to get over the line, but we did play our hearts out.

Before this game is completely confined to history, I should mention that a mate of mine who was a benching umpire for this game messaged me afterwards and said 'you must be pretty happy with the boys, they just never gave in and it was so clear to see from ground level'.
