I too would have preferred Marshall to Tunstill or even Dev but obviously the club has its reasons to give Tunstill another shot.

i think we should consider swapping w ashcroft's and neale's mid split

neale is obviously our best asset we want fit and firing for finals. i think decreasing the reliance on him through the midfield would help ensure he is peaking at the right time of the year. we got very lucky he managed to play through his injury last year whilst still producing high level footy, the season prior we saw him struggle in finals through the groin issue.

we've also seen teams go after neale with a hard tag twice already this season, and neale dragging that tagger away from the stoppage could really benefit our other mids.

on the other hand, i think giving will more responsibility through the midfield could really fast track his development. already seen how when given the task of being the #1 guy in there that he is more than capable (see GWS semi final, geelong this year). i think hes ready to be given the keys and really turn the midfield into his own.

right now ashcroft attends about 50%~ of centre bounces and neale 80%+. id swap this, and probably have neale as a 75% tog guy with forward rotations. might also free up some centre bounces for levi (how has he not attended a centre bounce yet this year!)

With just the one change you would think Tunstill goes to sub.

Wings most likely Berry, Levi Ashcroft and Bailey wing relief and forward.
That was the combo v the Cats with Reville coming on in the last quarter
McCluggage probably finds himself a few times on the wing.

Until Fletcher returns that's about the best wing combo we have at present.

The ruck battle is interesting going on the two encounters last year.
We won both (20 & 85 points). Oscar did not take a mark in either game
Oscar won the hit out battle easily in the big win and by just 4 in the other win.
Marshall way better around the ground with disposals and marks.

Lions win by 20
R14: Oscar 23 H/O, 6 D, 0 M, 1 goal V Marshall 19 H/O, 20 D, 5 M.
2nd R: Daniher 0 H/O, 20 D, 12 M, 5 goals and 3 Brownlow Votes V Campbell 12 H/O, 9 D, 1 M

Total Clearances: Lions 26 Saints 35. Centre Lions 13 Saints 20. Stoppage Lions 13 Saints 15

Lions win by 85
R21: Oscar 36 H/O, 9 D, 0 M, V Marshall 18 H/O, 17 D, 9 M, 2 goals
2nd R: H. Smith 11 H/O, 11 D, 1 M, V Owies 4 H/O, 14 D, 4 M,

Total Clearances: Lions 48 Saints 27. Centre Lions 15 Saints 7. Stoppage Lions 33 Saints 20.

Well it was essentially a review about Ross Lyon so maybe the question is fully justified? Are you sure you want to do this? Like REALLY sure??

Listening to Fages presser leads me to believe we've dropped off this season, even though we've started stronger. Last season Fages kept repeating that all the key stats and metrics were great for the club (despite our poor start) and that it would show later on in the season. But this season he seems to be really disappointed in how we've been playing, especially defensively. Teams have been able to score a barrage of goals against us in short spurts (something that didn't happen last year) and this has been for every team, even poor ones like richmond and west coast. If you eliminate our forwards (like Collingwood were able to do) we are effectively a team that could roll over to anyone. Even the worst of teams. Hopefully fages is able to correct this through the course of the season, but I think this game will be won and loss on which teams scoring bursts are stronger. It's also clear that we're not the best team in the comp right now, so a win here isn't given. But let's hope the boys respond after last weeks disappointment.

Pressure and effort. Richmond made a game of it in the first half last night purely from relentless running and chasing. We are a mixed bag in this area but good, disciplined teams can get us here.

St Kilda will be one of those teams so we need 4 quarter effort level to get a win this round - something consistent and better than what we've put up so far this season.

Well said

I think this is a massive game for us

Step 1 has to be us becoming harder to play against, in particular midfield pressure and defence. We are way off in those areas at the moment

The saints are a great test case. They are actually quite good when allowed to play their own game this year. But go to water if you put the clamps on.

The players have known they are out of form but it’s hard to really get out of a slump when you are winning. So that pies loss should hurt and give some a reality check

We also no longer have the pre season / cooked excuse. Even players short of a run have now had 6 games. 9 day break - our real season starts now in my view

Crucial as well because if we win this we should go 9-1 or 8-2. And we need to as our draw gets very hard after that

Also thinking of the players who are SIGNIFICANTLY down on form or missing, it’s a miracle we are 5-1

Lohmann - arguably our best small forward
Cameron - second leading goals 2024
Daniher - leading goals 2024
Rayner - match-winner / AA squad 2024
Starce - best mid defender
Harris - best defender / captain
Oscar - ruckman who does 90% of the ruck
Kiddy - best kick
Neale - best player / captain

We have got very little out of them for various reasons

Big issue in this game will be the ruck contest. Oscar's been going awful imo except he kicked a couple of goals last week. I didn't see much of the Saints last game but a friend of mine who's a Saints tragic said the way Marshall went last week Oscar will dominate him ( till I filled him in on how Oscar's going ).

Oscar doesn't seem to get off the ground much this season for someone who's never really got much off the ground , maybe he's still trying to get to full fitness.

I know the stats were posted earlier, but I feel Oscar has beaten Marshall the past 3-4 times we've played them. Marshall gets a few more stats around the ground (or drifting forward when Campbell went in the ruck), but Oscar has manhandled Marshall somewhat in the ruck contests.

Hopefully it'll give him some confidence to get back into top form.

St Kilda.

I don't like St K.

Don't hate 'em.....don't like 'em.

I met a bloke once, Brian Healy, his name was.....suggested to me that backing St K was "cool, because they always lose, and chicks dig that."

Brian and I met only once, in Year 7. A fountain of wisdom

But, it forever shaded my opinion of St Kilda, Lockett et al notwithstanding. Some good-ish years, Nick (stolen from us, but nevermind that) came close.....

.....campaigner of a bounce though, it must be said :D
