I think the bigger issue with Charlie is his goal kicking. He's still getting shots on goal that 2 years ago he was nailing consistently.
Yep. Could easily have kicked 3 or 4 on Saturday and we'd be singing his praises.
His speed has dropped a bit, but that could potentially mean he becomes a more complete player rather than just relying on burning off his opponent with pace.

Given how we've previously handled good players down on form and confidence, Charlie will be given every opportunity and plenty of time to get his back.

I can see what you mean about using his smarts and experience more.

Biggest problem is how can he have got to this point in his career and still not have a planned out kicking routine. If he is nailing those 1-3 shots a game there is no questions.

Without having the stats, perhaps he was kicking most of his goals when he was snapping them in play or kicking them on the run when it was just instinctual and he didn't have time to stop and think about it.

Now he's having set shots and is down on confidence he's unsure and not trusting his decision making and routine.

Our forward line depth is amazing ....

Charlie can definitely play a role, the question is, would 2-3 weeks in the reserves allow him to regain his confidence quicker?
I remember Leigh Matthews saying last year, at a time when some forum members were calling for Zac Bailey to be dropped, that dropping good players doesn't help them get their confidence back.

Charlie's gone from being just about the fastest player in the comp over 10-20m to just one of the faster players. So his strategies for wrestling his man and bursting off him at the last moment aren't quite as effective.

Hipwood
Morris
Lohmann
Bailey
Cameron
Rayner
Ah Chee
Day

Then Linc, McLachlan, Gallop, etc

I'm not convinced Charlie has a confidence issue.

Last year the chat on Eric was he needs to build his confidence in the reserves. Turns out he needed to heal an injury so he could kick.

On that, I reckon Eric has trained his right leg kick to help ease the pressure on his left. Blancing the leg forces balancess the pelvis, which is part of managing pelvic pain. Silver lining is a better forward.

Charlie is kicking like Eric last year. Maybe he has a injury that wasn't server enough for surgery or seemed to heal over the off season but has flared again under the stress of actual competition.

As bad as Hippy was, Charlie has taken it to another level. Imagine missing 10 shots on goal in a row.

Charlie is kicking like Charlie last year:

Charlie’s biggest issue last year was his woeful accuracy. Compared to 2023 he took half a shot less per game.

The reason his goal tally dropped from 59 in 2023 to 44 last year is he couldn’t hit the side of a barn door and had a ridiculous amount of complete misses.

I really don’t see to the naked eye a noticeable difference in pace, and he still offers a lot even if the goals were down.

With Joey playing last year and before, Hippy’s role in the forward line was very different and unrewarding for the everyday supporter to appreciate.
How many times did coach or DD say he plays his role every week.
He’s played 180 + games and never been dropped which is also a good message to everyone how valuable he’s rated by the ones running the show.

Another solid analytical take by Darragh on the Saints game.

Just a super game by Darcy Wilmot too. I'm loving seeing him run off half back and get high up the ground these days. I do wonder what the hell is going to happen when Kiddy is back in play though?!?

It's been like this for a couple of years but feel the mental stress/pressure on him seems as big as ever.

Any set shot he looks worse and worse. Seeing him line up from outside 50 on the weekend was so bad. Could tell he was never going to make it.

Fulfilled most of our KPIs for this game

Defence a bit stingier but needs to improve more - Fletch falling over fora Higgins goal encapsulated the sort of goal we need to stop conceding

Hippy is in really good form i think. That pies game was very much an almost game for him just couldn’t quite clunk a couple.

Day is improving every week. Genuine question, has he been outmarked this year? It seems to be he often sticks one hand in the air while holding off his defender. Makes it hard to mark but means a good soft drop for our smalls. I think he’s become quite valuable. Had 3 shots at goal in the third quarter which is a big lift from earlier in the season

Gardiner - would love him to play teams with smaller forward lines. His big strength vs pain is he is much better when the ball hits the ground. We should play Gardiner v hawks for example. But we won’t.

Bailey - career best form i think. Great timing tol

Charlie - he’s a watch. Got enough of it on the weekend. I think it’s confidence more than lost speed. He needs his speed - doesn’t have the guile / skill of say Betts to play that old when he has slowed down.

Oscar - much needed confidence booster, Rayner ditto

Kai - could see what he brings in aerial threat albeit briefly! Need him back and firing

Tunstill - looked the most at home playing afl i’ve seen him

I still think Charlie has lost some speed or is continuing to carry an injury (hopefully it’s the latter, but I had my doubts last year and even more now).

As I said on Saturday he would’ve had 2 goals to his name 2-3 years ago, because he would’ve burnt off his opponent instead of having to kick/snap them on the run. These are the goals that he doesn’t get so easily anymore and as such it’s putting even more pressure on his set shots to make them count. It’s spiralled now where he’s lost complete confidence in kicking at goal in any form. Even his shots from out wide he’s asking teammates whether to snap or a drop punt. This is the same guy who was an AA level forward and probably the best at the position for the best part of 4-5 years.

Again, I hope he’s carrying an injury but the guy is over 30 now, and has had unbelievable speed really for the game, but you have to expect that to wane a bit. I’m not dropping him, but I do worry about his future as he’s a player who has never been able to play other positions and has relied so heavily on his superior pace to get his goals.

I remember there was talk of Days job was to bring the ball to ground for the smalls.
It seemed odd at the time of taking Day,but you can bet your life that, those who study the game, knew what they were doing.

Bailey would be well and truly in AA contention right now

If he could just finish off more often he'd be a lock.

Fantastic player and one of my favorites

He's a very reliable set shot but he lets himself down sometimes with running shots that he should absolutely nail.
