Even though we won, not playing Cox was a mistake imo. The aerial battles should have been our strength but they were our weakness. I have never seen McStay / Checkers dominated like that.

Ned Long I thought was superb. We are such a better centre clearance team when he is in there. Sidney was also superb.

Nice bounce back in the second half from Bobby. Really pleasing to see. McGrath is a tough opponent but Bobby had some nice moments.

Great effort from Membrey and Elliott to carry the load.

The lowlight was the Lipinski holding the ball in the last quarter. You have Nick Daicos calling for the handball - give him the bloody ball especially given the area of the ground. Wake up Bro.
I thought that too re Lipinski.
Thou in fairness if u look closely, I think there was a ESS player in the way of Nick.

This was a very significant victory.

The ability of our team to respond to opposition surges was enormous. After Essendon's 4 goal surge in the 2nd quarter, we were able to first arrest their momentum and then regain control systematically. It seemed as if our players just knew themselves what they needed to do. Pressure was ramped up again in F50 to keep the ball at our end, and we reinvigorated our defensive work in the corridor to force them along the line.

Fly's comments regarding the 3rd quarter lapse in communication are very telling: he was confident to hand the keys over entirely to the team, because they know how to drive the car.

This is a dimension of experience that all the talking heads in the media have utterly failed to comprehend. They looked only at physical parameters and data: the average age is the highest ever in AFL history. How can such a team be quick enough to play at AFL level they almost universally cried.

Fly is producing a master class of coaching. He views experience as an asset of immense value. The team is being galvanised and co-ordinated by veteran superstars who are leading, directing and co-ordinating a game plan based on a system that every player has taken on board fully.

Naturally, Fly is assisted due to the fact that the veterans he is relying on are players of genius such as Pendles, Sidey, Jamie and Jem Howe.

But he had to have the foresight, vision and above all faith, of what could be possible.

I am just rapt with this game, and rapt that Steele has won another Anzac medal, a mere 9 years after his first!

It was nice to see Nathan Murphy in the rooms in the Collingwood puffer jacket after the game. Does he have an official role at the club or just hanging out with his mates?

I sit in the Ponsford stand close to the front row on level 1 and while we don’t get wet from rain or showers (bits but not much) didn’t appreciate just how wet it was till the walk back to my car.
It’s weird as you’re there but not realising it’s a lot wetter than you think it is.
Congratulations to both teams but especially to our boys in the tricky conditions.
JDG getting some games under his belt. He still looks unmatch fit imo.
Billy Frampton is doing pretty well. Good on him.
So glad “we” won.
Go Pies.

Wow Nick absolutely gets marked differently to others.

By far the most damaging player on the ground.
Would be interested to see his score involvements.

Steele, Josh and Billy all easily our top 3 yesterday. Nick neck and neck with Pendles for 4th and that's not a knock. We have some players in serious form.

Yep, Longy did a lot of the grunt work today, again was very good in close, he sticks his tackles which is a part of his game that I love.

He's a gem. A bit of a throw back to previous eras. Plays to inflict a bit of pain and his ball use continues to get better each week. Such a plus to have him running through the midfield.

Beautifully put.👍

Fly is a very clever coach. Rather than going down the ‘protect and manage’ route for our veterans - he has used their experience to our advantage. He has exploited it!

The ‘protect and manage’ may come later in the season, but right now we say pfft to that. Knowing what happened in the third quarter last night and how we dealt with it - amazing.

Great win in the end. I was losing my shite in that 2nd quarter when they came roaring back, and we completely stopped. We went into our Jekyll and Hyde mode of establishing a lead then giving the opposition 3 or 4 consecutive goals.
I like however how we adjusted in game, and managed to really blow them off the park. I feel if it was dry, and not that persistent drizzly rain which was annoying, we would have kicked a much bigger score. We kicked over a 100 pts in those conditions, which is impressive in itself.
Big Macs knees are a concern, has he now done the ACL and now a second MCL. So not expecting to see him for 8 weeks. Step up Coxy. I wasn't sure if Coxy was going to be the man this year, and thought he may just slowly drift out of the AFL side this season, but l now think he is the best suit for Cameron. They work well together, so l can see Coxy playing a big part for the next few months. Hopefully West may get a run in the time McStay is absent.
Sidey is a freak of nature. He hasn't wound back the clock, he's built a DeLorean and gone back to the future. He's transported his 2017/18 self to 2025!! If you counted the Brownlow votes now, he would be sitting top 3 to 5. He is playing unbelievable footy. What a legend!!
In saying that, l would have given the medal to Billy. I think kicking 5 goals in those conditions was a magnificent effort. His work inside F50, to create space, tackle, run into space to create a F50 marking option, was just elite. Loved his game....
A great team performance in tough conditions and the cream rose to the top in the end. Onwards to take on the Cats. We just continually have the big games!!!

I’m enjoying Frampton in the side, his form is holding up.

As much as I was looking forward to seeing Reef develop, you really need 2x 200cm key backs in today’s game.

We have that in Moore and Billy. Also shows who we should be targeting in MSD/National draft. Also why I think Dean struggles.

You need to be able to kill the long balls down the line or coming in, you can’t substitute height.

could you tone it down please, there's far too much positivity in this post. the hand wringers are upset that we allow the opposition to have any momentum at all, ever.
